Stop that - unions are great - we need them so that their fat cat bosses can get massive wages and free houses to live in.

Also they are good at many things, for example they are good at organising strikes, and other things - that I cant think of at the moment - but there must be something else they are good at? Also they are good at organising strikes.

We need unions like newly weds need the late show.

If you read Tony Blairs book he gives an honest summary of the Unions and how they are and were a pain in the labour movements side as well.

I must say i like the union stance, the country is nearly bankrupt so lets all strike and make sure we finish the country off

More daily fail bullXXXXXX for the little Hitlers amongst yous.... littlejohns just an outspoken prick, unions are there to help the workers Wtf is wrong with that.....the union bosses earning all that money how awful of them.....paid for by subs of the members so what's the problem..unlike our taxes which no one gets a say on who they are spent on bailing out of the XXXXXX this week...unions & students are the only people with any balls, the rest of you assume the position and prepare to be shafted eh!

A Trade Union is a collection of working people speaking together.

Of course MiltonKeynes P***poor wouldn't want that, as it ruins his deferential, forelock tugging style, bending over for the upper classes to shaft him on a regular basis while he maintains his blindfold of ignorance.

I love his efficiency panacea of outsourcing back office processes to India. Surely the Daily Mail could find some revolting right wing demagogue to bash out this tripe from some back room in Delhi? Or perhaps replace him with a handy iPhone app?

Unions have have not changed their approach and moved with the times and are just stuck in a 70s timewarp. Everybody has rights and should be protected from bad employers but the strike fight strike mentality has not worked in the past and will not work in the future. hurting the man on the street when there are no busses etc is no longer acceptable

littlejon and his paymasters are running scared...

my unions great as well, 35 hour week, 6 weeks holidays, 8 bank holidays and year on year pay rises...

pensions still final salary..i have the 'union' to thank for that...they organised the workforce, the employer shifted.[^]

This is so misguided, was littlejohn alive when the union movement started, are all bad employers his fault.
Unions started to help workers who were abused and used etc and did a good job. When the power went to their heads they then forgot the workers rights and used them for their own aims, and ultimately lost big time. They now are an old dinasour

intheplasma Posted on 07/01/2011 11:58

No Littlejohn was not around when the basic working week was 84hrs for a wage that wouldn't feed you for a week.
I agree the unions have changed out of all recognition sometimes for the worse but if we no longer had them then the used and abused you speak of would be back in a flash. As for the bad employers, they are the vast majority and never went away, thanks to the unions they just don't get away with their disgusting ways like they used to.

Then why do you believe it is all littlejohns fault as you stated???

I did agree the unions did a great job at first like you say. There are some really great companys now to work for who think a great deal for the care of their staff. I think we need to take into account the country is nearly bankrupt and changes need to happen and take the 70s anti employer attitude and put it in the nearsest bin

Unions, provide legal and financial advice, ensure H&S legislation is carried out, maintain agreed working practices, support unfair dismissal claims. Yeah dinosaurs!

Bernie is so blinded by his worrying love of littlejohn that he fails to realise that the area he is from has had its quality of life improved exponentially by the Union and Labour movement, from workers rights to minimum wage, even health and safety legislation all of which has helped improve the wealth, comfort and safety of industrial teesside's working population.

al1948uk Posted on 07/01/2011 13:10

I agree with boro8686. It is shameful that anyone with a working class heritage and that includes nearly all of us, should slag off unions.

All the improvements that we have enjoyed is because of the heroes and sheroes who put the necks on the line. When was the last time your employer offered you extra money, holidays and benefits without a radical change in your working patterns?

I suppose all those businesses who are not paying tax (TopShop etc) are doing it to pay their workers even more money right?

If you want to worry about something, think on...the Coalition are not going to tax/challenge Bankers Bonuses, and the Quango's cutting exercise has been labelled a disaster by its Tory chairman.

Roll on the election.

tomtom3 Posted on 07/01/2011 13:39
LITTLEJOHN Takes on The Unions

I have a working class background and i am NOT ashamed to say the union movement today is a DINASOUR looking out for its own interests

I have already stated above the, as you say, heroes and sheros of the past did an amazing job of getting workers some rights but all there hard work is lost from the 70s on by there own fat cat leadership.

Roll on the election..... One party spends all our money the next needs to claw it back some how. This is a never ending circle of politics that all parties are crap at so an election will change nothing.

As i have said read Tony Blairs book he has an labour opinion on unions

Well thanks for these words of wisdom. If you really believe the members control the unions then thats fine, does that include the fat cats who control the union though because they never suffer in any dispute

"If unions are dinosaurs then we are all dinosaurs because we are the unions. Unless you don't join one or drop out."

Rubbish. Less than 30% of people are in a union, and i bet 90% of those are public sector workers where it's more or less mandatory.

Truth is, the vast majority of people in the UK think unions are a waste of time & money. Thats why their membership has gone down the pan.

Your use of CAPITALS appears to be all you need as proof of your point.

By the law of averages there will be a number of fat cat union bosses, but far fewer than you would find in industry or banking. Don't forget unions can be right wing, as well as left wing. Just ask Lord Frank Chapple ex Power Union.

Given the successive legislation curbing unions, is it any wonder people are sceptical. It is not unions per se, but the attitudes of successive governments. You obviously think it is reasonable to limit numbers on picket lines, while factories are closed and jobs exported abroad.

Why should anyone read Blair? He invaded Iraq and then asked Government for its approval. Then of course, there is the issue of '45 mins'. Are you serious?

No not proof i have never said in any of my posts that i was right and anyone was wrong its all just my opinion. i dont think any militant union action is reasnoble so you are right about me there. If you dont want to read Blair then dont again it was only a point as he mentions union problems in the book which are only his opinions.

Todays unions IN MY OPINION are a complete waste of space that the majority of people dont want

Leitrim.

Please use your genius insight to tell me how just 30% of the population being in a union shows that everyone thinks they are great and worthwhile.

And lets remember that those 30% includes the civil service where it's pretty much de rigour, the NUS, the police federation etc.

Bernie, stick to posting the thoughts of the Blessed Richard, you look less foolish that way.

For your information the "Police Federation of England and Wales" (to give it's full title) is not a Union - there is a clue in the name.

Tom Tom try working for a non union employer then come back and tell us that they don't give you fair breaks, fair working conditions, fair wages, holidays, sick pay. Then try and fight it yourself.
You can then come back and say we don't need unions, and I won't give a toss.

BoroAl

Spot on, if the unions were done away with the fat cat bosses would be back to their old tricks, longer hours, longer working weeks,no holidays, sackings for looking over your shoulder and much, much more and although this little rant might sound over the top, all of it was the norm before the Trade Union Movement started
As BoroAl says take a step back in time and try a non union job for awhile, guaranteed to change ones views of the unions.
