No, but it's a bit rich (tee hee) to see a power to the people type talking about the rights of the working man when he lives in a mansion (and has never done a days work in his life). But it's no surprise. They all do it once the cheque book is dangled in front of them.

Billy Bragg has less talent than a run of the mill busker, how he ever sells records is beyond me. But I guess it's the 'right on' rebel brigade that buy his hypocritical words and not for his annoying droning voice that he possesses.

He's a decent guy, a great performer, and his success was built on sales of reasonably priced vinyl containing a fair mix of songs about love and politics.

To say that he was no talent is to write off the whole punk / post-punk movement.

As it is, many of his songs about love from a bloke's perspective are the best in the past 30 years.

FFS I can't stand this shoite that you can't have socialist views and be successful. BB is a socialist not a Communist. If anything I think it is admirable for someone to make it good, but still care about those less fortunate. Many of you Tory f**kers have made a bit of dough and now don't give a shoite about your people. You read Murdoch's right wing propaganda and decide everyone who is in difficulty are lazy, bone idle and should fend for themselves.
BB might live in a mansion but I bet proportionally he gives more time and money to the under priviledged than any of you tossers!

We all mellow with age. Do you think the hippies of the 60's are still hippies....of course not. What Bragg said as a young idealistic kid is probably a lot different from what he says these days. However, he still advocates workers rights, free health & education and is vehemently anti racist. Not sure that makes him a hypocrite? I would say I am the same. I realise that we need to have a public/private partnership, but the above things are sacred. Universal free healthcare and education is a basic human right. I will believe this till the day I die!

zaphod Posted on 07/01/2011 10:47

SS, I don't think you know what socialism is, if you consider yourself a socialist.

Socialism means the ownership of the means of production by the people in a sort of cooperative association (not the state), in which there is no employer or employee (no wage slaves), and the allocation of resources according to need.

I doubt if there are more than a handful of genuine socialists in the UK any more. Billy Bragg is clearly no longer a socialist, if he ever was. People change, you know.

The_263 Posted on 07/01/2011 10:50

SYDNEYSIDER Posted on 07/01/2011 10:57

Yes and I think we should have public ownership of healthcare and education, paid for with our taxes. That's socialism mate, maybe not to the letter, but as much as it realistically can be

zaphod Posted on 07/01/2011 11:02
Billy Bragg and his absolutely gigantic house

SS, as you say, genuine socialism is unrealistic. Capitalists do not claim there is no role at all for the state, as you seem to suggest. The issue in a capitalist economy is to define what is properly the role of the state. Of course, ownership by the state is not socialism.

I oft wonder where our beloved Billy Bragg keeps his money? Does he have a portfolio of investments? Spread wisely of course, to include shares, units, bonds, gold, property etc? Does he have an accountant to ensure an "ecconomical amount of tax" is paid?

Would be interesting to find out if BB uses the capitalist system for his very own benefit.

red_rebel Posted on 07/01/2011 11:59
Billy Bragg and his absolutely gigantic house

There is some hypocrisy in all this....

are all the smug self made Tories on this thread actually sneering at a working class lad who has managed to make good and buy a nice house? I thought that was what they wanted? I thought breaking out of the strait-jacket of class was a good thing? Surely they should be championing comrade Bragg?

Or maybe the real problem is that he has done it without becoming a toady to the system, without crawling in gratitude at getting a few crumbs from the system, without buying into the idea that with success comes an obligation to publicly sneer at how and who you used to be.

It is the politics of envy: those who have made it good are bitter that someone has done well shows them up because he hasn't become a hard-harded, greedy and nasty, that it isn't an obligation to abandon morality and social conscience.

It is a tired argument that has always been used against socialists (and anyone who questions the system) ... if you have any success you must immediately give it up and take to sack cloth and ashes. "If you are a real socialist you will sell your DVD and telly and give the money to a tramp..."

Socialism is not about individuals. It is about the economic system. You can wheel out all the examples of 'socialists' who have houses, cars and jobs you like, it doesn't change the real argument

If Bragg gave up his house tomorrow to fund a homeless refuge would it have an impact on the economic madness of a system reduced to chaos by the greed of bankers milking an artificial credit bubble?

That's the real issue.

No, but there would be less homeless people on the streets, which one would assume would make a difference to them. Maybe comrade Bragg does fund a shelter, none of us know.

Are all self-made tories 'hard-headed, greedy and nasty' or is that just as much of a crude stereotype as the one that imagines that all socialists should give most of there money away?

I have posted about a similar thread to this before.

I know Billy a little, and I have been to his house twice, and have met him perhaps a dozen times in addition.

He has released around 20 albums now, and has toured fairly consistently for around 30 years - as such, i think it would fair to say that he is entitled to have earnt a living from what he has done.

His house is in Dorset (Burton Matravers IIRC), and when he bought it , it had previously been a B and B - He and his wife, who works as an Interior Designer did it up over the course of about 12 months. It is beautiful for sure.

He has worked hard all of his life, he supports COUNTLESS good causes in a whole host of ways, and he has set up several charities himself.

I see nothing to be ashamed of in working hard, earning from your "art", giving some away, and using the rest to support yourself and your family.

The thing that gets me about these threads is the stream of patronising left-wing posters in one breath criticising the crass generalisations about socialism / communism and in the next dismissing all tory voters as evil and anyone who might argue the benefits of capitalism as being driven by bitterness jealousy and sneering at the working class.

They lay claim to the intellectual high ground but are guilty of just as many lazy and ill-informed cliches.

What's the difference between bernie's rantings and trumped-up rhetoric like this?...

"It is the politics of envy: those who have made it good are bitter that someone has done well shows them up because he hasn't become a hard-harded, greedy and nasty, that it isn't an obligation to abandon morality and social conscience."

I am a socialist, not a communist - and we can debate the whys and wherefores of the differences all day long, it makes not one jot of difference -

Socialism's goal is to ensure that the benefits of the production is shared equally across society.

Therefore if Bragg got his wish, the expensive rug would be pulled from underneath him and his interior designing wife.

Our current system doesn’t prevent him from completely sharing his entire estate. He could even remain in his big gaff, but presumably he’d also have to share it amongst god knows how many people it could house.

There’s nothing, absolutely nothing whatsoever preventing him to practise this.

IDEOLOGY Billy Bragg [:D]

When one voice rules the nation
Just because they're on top of the pile
Doesn't mean their vision is the clearest
The voices of the people
Are falling on deaf ears
Our politicians all become careerists
They must declare their interests
But not their company cars
Is there more to a seat in parliament
Then sitting on your arse
And the best of all this bad bunch
Are shouting to be heard
Above the sound of ideologies clashing

Outside the patient millions
Who put them into power
Expect a little more back for their taxes
Like school books, beds in hospitals
And peace in our bloody time
All they get is old men grinding axes
Who've built their private fortunes
On the things they can rely
The courts, the secret handshake
The stock exchange and the old school tie
For god and queen and country
All things they justify
Above the sound of ideologies clashing

God bless the civil service
The nations saving grace
While we expect democracy
They're laughing in our face
And although our cries get louder
Their laughter gets louder still
Above the sound of ideologies clashing

Hello dim wit, wondered when you'd be back. You obviously aren't aware of the immigration policies of the previous post war governments....the Tory governments brought in foreign labour to support industries in the 50's and early 60's, for the textiles and public sectors.

The Labour government just did the same as any other right wing government has since the late 50's. EU expansion, the Tories took us in, has made immigration easier.

You have a problem with it, your party did the damage.

cock The Cat. Once again you embarass yourself with your sheer ignornace.

The immigration of the 50's & 60's was controlled. Immigrants had to apply, in the same way that people going to Australia do now. Also, the people allowed in were brought here because we had labour shortages.

All that is the complete opposite of your Labour heros who allowed uncontrolled immigration at a time when we already had 2 million on the dole.

"Mido, I aske you where he had said that all property is theft".

It goes hand in hand with socialism. The give away is sticking your name next to socialist anthems.

The capitalists don’t begrudge Bills home to be flushed with it’s own personnel recording studio, editing suite and rehearsal room.

I’m almost certain a socialist order would though. I think they’d perhaps make him share one, instead of purpose built ones.

I suppose as recompense they’d let his wife redesign them into living rooms so his mates on here could lodge with him.

Rivals - George Moonbat was advocating just that this week. He described housing as a "finite resource" (ie, nobody can ever build any more houses) and said everyone who has a spare room must share.

Of course he lives alone in a 4-bedroom farmhouse. As usual, the principles don't apply to the hypocrite.

I'm sure he was.

You must remember his daily rants over the past three terms of Labour Government, when the cabinet and co were building up their property empires, via their expense's.

Billy Bragg was far more left when he was young just like I was. However, you grow up and your view become watered down. You realise that those cherished ideals will never work. However, he still supports social equality, takes a stance against racism and gives plenty to charity. I wonder how many of you have said one thing and done another i.e. had a season ticket when you were a kid, swore you always support the Boro, but now never go. Hmmmm smell that hypocrisy!

"So is to quit military service and live in a big house is a something to be sneered at ?

Hmmn good job that would never apply to any of the Windsor family eh ?"

So when did any of the Royal Family make a living from expounding socialist values and being anti capitalist? You just don't get the arguement do you?

That's a hell of a statement to make !!! (Though very honest). You are saying that the socialist ideal of the Che Guevara T shirt brigade isn't achievable, and as you grow up you realise that?

Well i never. Post of the day [:D][^]

Allow me to condense that statement:

If your not a Socialist before 30 you have no heart, if your still a Socialist after 30 you have no head

Please stop making assumptions. What I am saying is that True Socialism is an ideal. It would never truely work because people are inherently selfish. That is why Conservatism is so popular, because people only care about them and theirs and the rest of you are either too stupid or too scared to see through this.
This is why unions don't really work anymore because people want the world, but are not prepared to stand shoulder to shoulder with their brother.....if it's gonna cost them.
However, this aside, it does not mean that many of the principles of socialism cannot be relevent in todays society. The philosophy on which the Labour Party was built is still something worth fighting for: "A fair days pay for a fair days work", a "free education and health service for all". Mr Bragg just like myself believes and supports these notions. Whereas, you Tory voters don't. Your policies deliberatley undermine these great institutions, running them into the ground, so that there is no other option but to ask for outside (private) help.

Seems that you are making assumptions or is the 'do as I say not as I do' philosophy deep-rooted in socialism. I have never voted Tory in my life.

I recognised from a young age that political persuasion in a developed society like ours makes absolutely no difference to individuals' level of achievement in life. For instance, I have never forgiven the tories for depriving me of a small bottle of milk at a poor school in the 70's and equally Labour for not re-introducing it when in office. Equally, coukld never accept the rationale for Maggie sinking the Belgrano or Tony looking for WMD and invading Iraq. You find that power breeds greed and contempt whereas excessive support of individuals breeds laziness and dependancy.

What makes a difference to someone born in under-privileged conditions is drive, intelligence, values, ability to form relationships, determination, diligence, tenancity, drive and acceptance that all people are different. Personally I still have socialist values as I belive in looking after the underprivileged and equality for all in public services - however I recognise that this can only be funded by adopting aspects of capialism. I therefore am firmly on middle ground.

With this in mind, I find the very nasty responses on here from the dreamy left wing idealists funny and I have to say predictable. Furthermore, if I was a dreamy socialist I would be more than dissapointed with the actions of one of the icons of the left wing ideal.

Joe you speak a lot of sense. However, the trouble is many people are not in the middle, they are too the right of the middle. In theory they believe in free education, healthcare and helping those less priviledged than themselves, but in reality are not prepared to pay for any of if out of their back pocket. When I was in "Old" Labour they were always wary of mentioning "Tax",cos they knew the voters wouldn't go for it. Even if it meant a better, just society for all[|)]

SS: "A fair days pay for a fair days work", a "free education and health service for all" are not socialist ideals at all. They are liberal ideals and are shared by many non-socialists. Free education was introduced long before the Labour party was in Government, as was legislation supporting Trade Unions.

Mate I'm talking about Democratic Socialism which is what the original labour party was about: Clause 4, not communism!
