Said it earlier mind, the big thing for us will be Swann, the quicks have almost done the job, say they get one more, well it's job done fr the new ball. Then if we see turn on day one ? Even 200 would have us in a healthy position and it's a lot easier when you know the opposition have only got 98. But yes we have to be careful here the ball s doing a lot if you bowl well. Plus side is they are quite english conditions really. Just leave the ball well and make the bowlers bowl straight and play a lot off your legs, be tricky but 250-300 is gettable no Q..

Get to 50/0 or 50/1 see off the new ball and it should seem easier, we only need one big score from our top 6 really and a few contributions along the way. But we don't want to get 2 or 3 down for sod all abviously.. Either way no way should any Test side be a/o for 98 ffs. Ours to throw away really play anywhere near normal and there fuqed imo.

Keep an eye out for any spin that will decide how quick we can maybe win this. Ideally starts to turn, few cracks develop and the sun blasts down on the wickt. Swann will love that with a lead, fielders round the bat and the quicks steaming in from one end, with Swann twirling away at the other, could hammer them if we get a 300 run lead.

Just watching the highlights on SS2. My thoughts were that the Aussies tried to engineer a pitch to replicate the WACA one, what they got was an underprepared green strip which combined with overcast skies made it behave more like Lords in May than Melbourne in December. They gambled and lost when they lost the toss. Stupid thing to do. Bless 'em.

I was lucky enough to be at the game today. I won't bore you with the details of the match as you will doubtless have seen the game or the highlights already. A few additinal comments maybe of interest though. 85,000+ crowd with I would estimate around 10,000 England supporters sp[read around the ground. Spent some time with the Barmy Army (numbered around 300) who were having a field day and outsinging the Aussies from start to finish (though with more than a hint of Southern accents). Most of the Aussies were stunned by the events (just as we were) but berated their own team rather than giving credit to England (no sursprises there then) ! There were a few Boro shirts in the crowd. We took two flags that were on show all match but due to restrictions on covering adverts I reckon only around 5% were out. There will be more in Sydney. Amazing days cricket. Certainly one of the most remarkable days sport I have ever witnessed. The Aussies are to cricket what Germany are to football ....... write them off at your peril. However this would be the greatest escape of them all should they avoid defeat here. They're coming home, they're coming home, they're coming, Ashes are coming home !

I think we can win comfortably with a 300 run lead, but t looks like we'll end up with about a 400 run lead and win by an innings, our bowlers are a lot better, there poor bowling has made this pitch look flatter than what it is, a good bowling unit will take wickets on this pitch.

Think we'll struggle to get 350+ lead unless Trott gets a big hundred of course then we'll be fine for that kind of lead, I honestly think we have a big enough lead now, for me our bowling attack is just so much better, with so much variation, we got the height of Tremlett getting extra bounce, Anderson is the best swing bowler in the world, Swann the best spinner in the world, and Bresnan is just a solid reliable performer..

I predicted that he wouldn't captain this test, through illness or injury, but proved wrong. Ponting has courted controversy too many times now, and this latest petulant event will not please the ICC. If Ponting captains the last Test I'll be surprised, but it would definitely be his last.

When I was at Uni, I walways used to get stick about Craig White from my non-Yorkie friends, saying he was a convict. I used to defend him to the hilt saying he was ENglish and it wasn't his fault his parents moved there when he was 13 but they wouldn't have it. However, Wisden had some story on him and showed a photo of him in the Melbourne test in 2002 (pre Barmy Army) wearing an England shirt and with a Union Flag. That shut them up. I wonder where the allegiances of our African-born players is? Prior and Straussy are definitely 3-lions, but what about Trott and Pieterson? Whose result do they look for first?

yeah looking forwards to the resumption of play, I agree bat till lunch, play positively & push the lead on to 420-450. Then our new ball attack should get them one or two down, then over to Swann to twirl away from one end with men round the bat, and rotate the quicks in 4 or 5 over spells from the other end. The scoreboard pressure and our very good bowling attack will surely prove too much for the Australians.

Good morning everybody from Melbourne. It's 7am and the sun is coming up. we We had a great day at the MCG yesterday and looking forward to more of the same today. Everybody well chuffed with what's happening. The press are gunning for Punter. DISGRACE was the headline in yesterday's Herald the local paper. Barmy Army strangely not in as a big a voice as the 2005/6 tour and I put that down to the fact that the England supporters seem to be more spread out around the ground 67000 there yesterday although at the end I'd say the 20000 left in the ground were mainly England. Batting conditions will be tricky for first hour this mng but will ease. Then uneven bounce will start! That will be Swann time.

FFS I wish they would stop harping on about Ponting, we've always known he was a kn0b anyway, and it is taking away from what has been a superb England performance thus far. Anyway guess they'll stfu about it soon enough, but yeah starting to annoy me now in case you hadn't noticed. But yeh any sign of turn early on when they bat again and we'll have an early finish, if not it will just take a bit longer. Yeah can see what your saying, but you have to admit that the pitch still looks ok(ish) to bowl on, my main worry was if it looked really flat today, we dragged our innings on a bit, then they got to the close only 1 down say. then a bit of weather and who knows, it's one of thos egames where it's best it moves along, to me anyway...

OA, if it was the 4th day and not the 3rd day, maybe declare, but otherwise, we might as well bat on. In an ideal world, I'd love to see us bat most of the day and then declare, leaving the convicts to bat after spending two whole days in the field. Unfortunately, with 7 wickets down, that's unlikely. We'll still leave them needing 400+ to save the match, with the best part of two and a half days to bowl them out.

I'd have liked to have given them 15-20 mins to bat before lunch, openers hate those little sessions, you just tell your quick bowlers to run in give it everything then they get another go right away after lunch. So in effect one 10 over spell for each opening bowler, and the batters have to get in twice, each time with a new ball to face. Now another wicket just falls so it will be more than likely lunch just as we are all out, anyway reverse swing there, so signs of an abrasive surface, meaning it should turn also. These wickets prove my point it's good for us really, more so than if we had lost none.

Yeah the 40 min break, as oppose to a 10 min break helps them a tiny bit, but Hughes has looked a walking wicket all series, Watson never scores hundreds, Ponting out of form, massive scoreboard pressure, no chance of winning the game, and hardly any chance of a draw at all. We only don't win if our bowlers for some unknown reason perform well below even badly, never mind normal.

I was expecting us to declare a bit earlier to be honest, but I would guess that we were never going to come back out to bat after lunch. Tarmo every innings starts with a new ball if you're saying what i think you're suggesting there ? New ball every 80 overs from the start of each innings, if Aus are still in after 80 overs they will have about 240 runs, so they will still be about 150 behind, that's why a 400+ run lead is like a 'double' lead, and that once you're 350 infront, you nearly always win unless the pitch looks very flat, which this one doesn't, it just looks good to bat on.

You may have spinners bowling well with the old ball, you may have your quick bowlers enjoying bowling with the old ball, as that is when they get reverse swing. It may be the type of pitch which suits all of the above. But most the time you take the new ball as soon as it's available, or not too long after it's available. Cricket is just one of those games I'm afraid tarmo, where if you don't undertand the finer points, you will sometimes think WTF ! But in a way that's what's so good about it, and no other game is about the pitch so much. Well horse racing is I guess, if you can call it a pitch.

Those 'plane' messages in Oz are a load of tosh. I was there last winter and every day there is a plane up there writing a non-descript message. I have got photos of 'sorry' and 'call mum' over Sydney. I was amazed at first - turns out they are just generic messages they pipe out for some reason. Think Love Hearts in the sky.
