Ah you are refering to this incident in particular, I thought you meant in general.
As for todays incident, what options do we have. We should get piisssed off more often like the Frenchies. Unless I get a fantastically well paid jobm by the time my eldest is uni age it would probably cost me 30 000 to educate him. Yet the ricj M.P's, business leaders, toffs etc etc will barely be effected by it. So we return to a three tier system of education.
1 Those that can affored it without issue.
Those that take on the debt but spend a significant amount oif time paying it off
3. Those that cannot afford it or are scared away by the thought of debt.

Would you say the "Poll tax" riots did not achive a positive result for the general popultaion of the country

And??? Did their renumeration committees authorise it? did their shareholders authorise it? Is it in line with the market?

Has their performance been exceptional? As they are FTSE companies i would probably say the answer is "Yes".

I have more pressing concerns about the OP's current position of sitting on his bottom at home, raking in his benefits and sending his missus out to work all because of his "lifestyle choice" to stay at home and look after his kids (In other words a lazy, idle, maligering chunt) while having a go at a new government who are there to pick up the mess created by the one he supported.

His type are the real problem in society.

Gerrin the students!!!

While I have absolutely nothing against Students I don't see any reason why they shouldn't pay some sort of fee for their ongoing education.

9,000 is far too much but something should be paid especially with with the country going through the times we have at the moment.

It seems that nowadays it is the first thought for anyone leaving school to go to University. Why not bring back apprentiships for electricians, plumbers etc?

We can only accommodate so many graphic designers; games progammers etc and many kids are coming out of Uni with massive debts and not being able to find jobs in the area they have been studying.

'Did their renumeration committees authorise it? did their shareholders authorise'

They are all in it together. They are the real ruling class in this country and they set their own standards and look after each other. The shareholders don't care whose noses are in the trough as long as they get their dividends. Personally I'd rather live in a fair society, not one where the sons and daughters of the rich get better education, better health care and a better chance in life, then pull up the drawbridge behind them.

Holgate students already leave with debt, approximatley 15 000(i think) dependent on the course they do.
The thing is we need to invest in education, we need engineers, doctors, scientists etc etc.
The main point is though it is going to be the lower middle class hit the hardest by this...as usual
I do agree they should also bring back apprenticships for those that the university root doesnt appeal to[:D]

Southgate spouts again: "And??? Did their renumeration committees authorise it?" I am sure they did but, considering most renumeration committees are made up of non-exec directors that are in similar sized companies paying the same type of obscene salaries and bonuses, of course they think what they do is worth it. You and I both know that the whole system is jobs for the boys.
"did their shareholders authorise it? "

Oh yes they would have but over the last few years shareholder activism is starting to cut these salaries back, the sooner the better.

"Is it in line with the market? Please see answer one.

"Has their performance been exceptional? As they are FTSE companies i would probably say the answer is "Yes". The FTSE is a joke. Most companies are struggling because of the economic enviroment. Companies are culling staff and calling it rationalisation which generates bonuses for senior management. Also no FTSE company has increased its profits by 160% so what are they earning such massive increases for?

You have to look below the demonstrations, and find out why these students are so pished off. The cost of attending university has trebled over the past 20 years, and certain promises made by successive governments have been broken time and time again. This is totally detrimental to the overall education levels available to the whole country. Britain has gone from being a land of intellect and invention, to being a land full of chavs and orange women.

So in otherwords with your long rambling post i am right thanks John! [:D][:D]

"Most companies are struggling" No they arnt most companies are starting to recover hence the 135,000 jobs created this year.

The ones struggling are the ones who have been living high on the public sector hog for far too long or whose markets have dried up and that is just simply business.

Edit: Just noticed in one of the pictures on Sky that one of the students was an intern at my place... guess where ive just put his CV!! Violent little leftwing scumbag!

deganya Posted on 10/11/2010 16:29
Gerrin the students!!!

They went back on their signed pledge to not raise tuition fees and they did that because of the way Labour Governed the last time they were in power.... Like i said ,,still trotting out the same old line. The coelition made promise to get the tax dodgers but I don't see them doing that, perhaps they could have made a few bob out of tax dodgers and left the students to get an education so that they can become the next generation of engineers, doctors, nurses, accountants.

You have not won anything my friend, least of all any argument or debate.

But you still fail to address the point I was making, if you were an 18 year old student, voting for the first time and see the lib dems pledging no increase in tuition fees, voting for them must really stick in the throat seeing what they doing now. even lib dem members don't accept your argument.

Now try again sonny and come up with something more convincing next time Mr Southgatesotherelbow hahaha

Deganya, if i was an 18 year old student i would be wondering what is the rationale behind the increase was.

Every degree is funded by the government currently a minimum of 4k. as the previous government spent all the money by their own admission, see Liam Byrnes note at the Treasury, i would understand that unfortunatly i had to pay more.

So the problem is Labour spent their money oops!

Same old line?? nope the truth Deganya whether you like it or not. This government have been in power 6 months.. yours for 13 years... and this is your governments mistakes and being more pertinent a Labour mans recommendations.

The fact you base your whole argument about a joke note left at the Treasury says more about your knowledge of politics than anything else and if I were you I would think before you write as you just continue to shoot yourself in the foot.

The Cabinet Office has confirmed that Nick Clegg has "reluctantly" cancelled his attendance at the Oxford union next week. A spokesperson said the deputy PM confirmed he would not be attending "some time ago" due to "an unfortunate clash of diaries", and had not rescheduled.

'Son'? Deary me.

In your rabid haste to bash your keyboard, you have, unsurprisingly, misunderstood. I didn't suggest you were in a low paid, dead-end job. I'm alluding to your opinion - which you have reiterated in your response - that everybody who can work, should be in work, no matter their circumstances, or the job on offer.

This is because you are brainwashed into believing 'working' is the be all and end all of what life is about. Work, work, work, so you can buy a bigger car and a bigger house, and a bigger, more tacky holiday, all in the name of 'aspiration'.

I aspire to have children and teach them to be a decent human beings. If that means one parent not working, so they can be brought up the way you believe they should be, that is far, FAR more worthy than working for the sake of it.

If David Cameron could depict the result of his aspiration, he'd have a poster in his office with your face on it. 'Job Done'

If those lot were rioting football fans most of you revelling in the student protest, would be currently wetting your pants.

Fcuking disgraceful scenes, sh1thouses attacking WPC's etc, throwing fire extinguishers from a height at the police.

And by the way, these are supposed to be academically bright but they smash through a building and jump up & down for the cameras. Get them arrested and locked up.

The problem is that with the way the press is nowadays if you dont cause a fight or something nothing gets reported. If 50K people walked through London peacefully nowt would be on the news. At least now people know how serious this issue is to people. And it is a very serious issue, it could seriously undermine this countries abilities to compete in an ever growing knoweldge based economy.

Sorry kids, but this is just Tony Blairs 'everybody go to university vanity project' coming to it's inevitable end.

I feel for them, it's the students of over ten years ago that let you down. It's them who should have ransacked labour HQ when they let the genie out the bottle.

I nearly puked when Harriet dared even stand up to criticise. She had no problem with it a year ago.

Ransacking Tory HQ is pointless.

No i didn't. I claimed JSA for the first 6 months of my unemployment as i had enough tax in to claim contribution based JSA. After that i recieved zilch from the Job Center as my wife earns a decent wage. We get child allowance as we would if we earned 250k a year.

Feel a bit sorry for the students here. By and large students are a decent bunch who have at least bothered to make best of their education and not quit school for a life on the dole like others. I'm sure the vast majority were peacefully protesting and it was various left wing nut-job socalists acting like d!ckheads, as they usually do.

I was there today with my students union. We didn't have any idea of the carnage going on at millbank and were peacefully protesting, as were the vast majority of us. appletonlesmog Posted on 10/11/2010 23:36
Gerrin the students!!!

Great thread! Some really encouraging stuff, some unrepeatable bull from thoughtless, right-wing idiots who have absolutely no conception of the value of higher education - not just in monetary terms, I might add.
Classic FMTTM action! Both Billy Bragg and Richard Littlejohn would be proud.

So, the students that got a bit nawty: not clever - the head of the NUS has spoken out against them, as have UCU reps - my union. Point made.
Still: at least they know we mean business. Silver lining, and all that.

One thing we need to get straight: students pay tax.
We pay fees.
We pay interest on our loans.
Our parents pay tax.
So: we're not exactly freeloaders.

I'm in the third year of my PhD, and I've worked throughout, from my undergrad up. My folks have helped (I've been very lucky, and they've been kinder than anyone would deserve) where they could, and I haven't taken the XXXXXX. I've never, ever thought about claiming from the state, even when I've maxed my cards, raped my overdraft, sold my posessions, and worked two jobs while writing a dissertation.

As it happens, I want a career in academia, so I don't expect any congratulations/pity - I knew what I signed up for: if it was easy it wouldn't be worth it.

But: as a member of staff at my uni, I've seen 115 colleagues made redundant, the creche closed, security fired, catering fired, student health clinics closed, support services scrapped.

That was all before this budget. In many ways, if anyone thinks this is anything to do with Tories, or the coalition, they haven't been paying any attention to British, or Western politics more generally, in recent years.

The point of a subsidised (or free) education, is that the opportunity is there for all. Subsequently, we pay back, in taxes, for our peers, our children, and the children of others to have the right to this opportunity.

9k fees would have stopped me in my tracks at 16 - there would have been little point in A levels, since I'd never have made it to uni.

For those saying 'poor students will pay less' - read the small print: you'll pay back less (but for longer, while the interest creeps up and up) but the price at the point of delivery will be the same.

This means that an education is for the rich, not for all. If you don't understand that, you should have tried harder at school - never mind uni!

I'll be there next time UCU call us out (two strikes and more demos than I care to think about this year - you can't do 'em all!), and I'll be XXXXXXing angry!

XXXXXX this 'liberal' bullXXXXXX.

Rant over (apologies for length...)

Gerrin the students!!!

Apologies. Just reacting to some of the many moronic comments on this thread by being equally moronic.

Not at all keen on the price hike meself, but not all courses are going to be able to charge the 9000. Leave Oxbridge to thick toffs. Other unis will charge smarter (and skinter) kids something more affordable and they will thrive by having a more intelligent bunch of students.

20000 is a lot of debt to take on, but no worse than the 200000 you'll end up taking on with your mortgage. Property price increases over the last ten years are far more severe than education price increases, but no-one seems to bang on about that.

ron_manager Posted on 11/11/2010 00:15
Gerrin the students!!!

It worked Gubba, but irony accepted[^]

I understand the arguement for housing but dont forget a graduate would not only have the educational debt but also a mortgage aswell.

TonyGubba Posted on 11/11/2010 00:34
Gerrin the students!!!

Cheers Ron. I was being a nob.

Totally understand the both debts thing. I do still think though that some students are going to uni without thinking through what they'll do afterwards. Like I said, I don't agree with the fees rise, but I do think that you should pay something reasonably substantial so you at least take it seriously and go to the odd lecture.

However, this is only going to work if 16 year olds have got decent alternatives. Some of the wealthiest blokes I know left school, learnt a trade and are doing really well for themselves. Good on 'em. I went to uni, had a good time, learnt a fair bit and am doing alright for myself. The worst of both worlds is when kids go to uni on a promise of a bright future and come out with massive debts and the same jobs that they could have done when they left school.

I'm sure that this isn't the Tory way of thinking. They're twwats who look after their own. But it strikes me that there's too few graduate jobs for graduates, so have a think before you go.

Not going to university isn't a sign of failure. Shed-loads of smart people got on without going. An accidental advantage of this is hopefully 16 year olds will get to realise this. Not that the Tory's give an arsse what I think, mind.
