The Wildhearts

Brilliant songwriter and, on form, the best live band I've seen (God knows I've seen thousands). Never achieved the huge success that their potential warranted for several reasons.

1. A habit of going to war with their major record label....resolutely indie ever since.
2. A pretty much unrivalled fondness for excess
3. They're about the most unstable band ever. The only reason they have survived so long is that they keep breaking up.
4. The main man is a nutter.
5. Getting tagged as a Kerrang band because they had long hair, when in fact they had more in common with The Ramones, The Clash and The Manics (with whom they toured early doors).

There are some amazing pop bands who never even get close to the charts. Dragonette and Annie produce stuff far better than gaga. And siobhan donaghys last album got to number 109 or something. The trouble is there's no easily definable audience.
B52s is a good shout, far more to them than love shack. Probably the best gig I ever went to was seeing them in the roundhouse.
And on the guitar side of things there's lilys. Probably the best band in the world. No one buys their records, and they're dismissed by critics as being unoriginal charlatans.
But the one that takes the biscuit is the aloud. The best pop band since abba. Tangled up wasn't even nominated for a mercury. Male White guitar music snobbery.

Good shouts for:

The Chameleons - to whom Editors should have dedicated their debut album.

Jason and the Scorchers - who came in on the same transatlantic tide as REM and Green on Red.

The The - Soulmining was the best synth-pop album of the 80s and still sounds fresh, despite the 'down at heel' lyrical content.

The Go Betweens. Those who know me would be confused that, like the Boro, their name doesn't really have the prefix 'Mighty' .

I'd like to offer a well known band from the 60s, whose influence on 70's rock pop, 90s BritPop, and the British tradition for whimsy and every day social comment deserves a much higher regard.....

The Kinks.

They are well known. They have been very successful. But they should be Absoluuuuutely Mahoooosive!

Massively underrated bands

Some great shouts on here, but Talk Talk for me are easily the most underrated band ever.Listen to them quite regularly, always intriguing- some fantastic lyrics and Mark Hollis is a genius, if not slightly odd!
