Darlington Arts Centre & Civic Theatre To Close

Just what i feared would happen, is happening.

We all know the cuts must be made to reduce public sector spending. But while the government decides the reduction amount, it's the local (usually left wing) councils that decide what will actually go at ground level.

Hence Darlington council have announced that they will withdraw their 1 million per year subsidy to local arts, meaning that the Civic theatre & the arts centre will close next year.

So, predictably, it's not the diversity workers, the counsellors, the lesbian outreach workers, the climate change advisors, the five a day co-ordinators or the Transgender drop in centres that will face the axe, but things that people want and need, such as the arts.

Then the council can sit back and say "Oh look what those nasty Tories have done, robbing pensioners of their Saturday matinees and the little kiddies of their pantomimes". Meanwhile, as the arts venues are being boarded up, the public sector recruitment pages of the guardian will be as full as ever.

B*astards.

Who by? The last few times i've been there for plays the place has been about a quarter full.[V]
Doesn't seem much interest in live theatre these days. Everyone is sat at home watching X factor with their brain in neutral.

As I pay my council tax to Darlington BC this is really bad news as we use the Civic quite a lot during the year.

Once the funding is cut, during "bad" times, it never seems to be reinstated when there's a return to "good" times.

if it is not commercial then it will fail, it has a building, an idea, a staff it will just not receive 1M of public money to subsidise failures.

if the staff are not good enough and can not come up with good ideas then it will fail!
if the staff are in tune with what the public want then it will make money!
