in defence of bandy, he has a family and does a lot for them. most on here saying they would pay £20 tip don't have a family and probably got a bigger joint income too. so far more disposable income. i think people should realise that. i'm sure bandy would rather spend that £20 on his kids and see them enjoy themselves. maybe tipping should be in according to salary?ie a percentage

Dan_Ashcroft Posted on 25/10/2010 13:24

Bandy should go holiday in Japan - a tip there is considered an insult to the establishment you are dining in.

Bandy Posted on 25/10/2010 13:58
Star Inn at Harome...

It varies. A few quid I suppose if the place is decent and the food has been good.

The_263 Posted on 25/10/2010 13:59
Star Inn at Harome...

I was in a highly rated steak restaurant in San Francisco when I was ~20 with my girlfriend as part of tour across the US. I didn't have a credit card and was budgeting daily. We overestimated the cost this particular evening and could only afford a $1 dollar tip. As we were leaving the waitress comes over and slaps the dollar in my palm and yells, ' you forgot your change!' I just said thanks and smirked!

Bandy, I have two kids that eat adult portions so eating out as a family is a rarity. In saying that, I'd rather miss a meal or cook my own than go to a recognised cheap franchised outlet just to fill a hole. It's a question of values and a tip, in my opinion, is a personal choice. I will not tip if I feel I've been over-charged or being served poor quality.

Bandy Posted on 25/10/2010 14:03
Star Inn at Harome...

who said I go to cheap franchised places to fill a hole. Thats just you summising and being a snob, or should that be a nob. If we get out then we generally go to a family run restaurant where tips arent expected and we know the managers. Not cheap but not expensive.

It's not just bringing out food though, it's taking your coats, making sure you're comfortable and not sat around waiting for food or drink, explaining the menu if necessary, smiling, etc. My dad struggles to walk so they let us sit down in the restaurant early, carried our drinks over for us and generally put themselves out for us. Lisbon, all that nonsense you describe about taking your coat and making sure you are comfortable is their job - that is why they are there!!

Do you tip people who let you out at a junction or open a door for you? it's just a matter of course and routine stuff that they should be trained on. Nowt to get your wallet out about!

Piggy Posted on 25/10/2010 15:27
Star Inn at Harome...

It's pretty straightforward. When you go to a restaurant you factor in a tip of around 10%. It doesnt matter if the bill is twenty quid or two hundred quid, thats how it works. If you cant afford the tip, you eat somewhere thats ten per cent cheaper, so that you can afford to do it properly.

where has this nonsense on having to tip 10% come from. its not like waitresses are paid the same as USA and need the tip. nothing wrong with just rounding it up. no rule you have to give 10% and not a cultural thing either.

Just admit you're a tight arse. It's funny but the vast majority of people on here seem to think that a £20 is not that "flash", and you and your mate seem to be swimming against the tide.

It's pretty obvious why you tip, IMO. Why would a waiter(ess) who get's paid hourly really care that much if you enjoy your experience or not, as long as they do their basic job. Well, if they know they are going to possibly get something out of it, they will make every effort to ensure your experience is as enjoyable and as a comfortable as possible. It's a symbiotic relationship, everyone's a winner.

Bloke I used to work with (and a complete tool) was one of a dozen of us having a long fantastic slap up client dinner with wine (and trimmings) in the US at a plush establishment - he volunteered to pay the bill using his company credit card. The bill was >$1000 USD but only put $10 as a tip. The service had been excellent and most of it by a young waiter. Anyway, when the waiter saw the $10 dollars he angrily asked the tool if they had been a problem. The tool said no, everything was fine. The chef came out and an argument ensued with the nob. By which time, everyone around the table had tuned in and degenerated into an embarrassing situation for our company. The senior manager in attendance handed over ~$100 dollars and later gave the tool a verbal fcuking!

In the USA, the 'servers' work at a rate well below the minimum wage. I think minimum wage is $7:45 an hour, and those servers actually get paid around $3:00 an hour. In other words, they depend on their tips, and often work very hard to make sure the service is excellent to make sure the customer leaves a tip.
I took the missus to a diner yesterday, the bill was $30, I left $6:00 as the tip because the lady serving us was fast, polite, kept the drinks filled, and did a great job.

Good service should be rewarded at a 20% rate, bad service shouldn't be rewarded ...

These Brits who chuck down their change need to think again !!

Some had pizza, others chicken and some had steak. I didn't really know anyone apart from the stag, but one lad was apparently a millionaire through mainly inheritance. When the bill came some of us just said split the bill. The 'millionaire' argued that he'd only had pizza, he'd only had one drink instead of some who'd had two and he never had a side dish or starter and point blankedly refused to pay more than what he ordered. Subsequently one of his mates had to be held back fromXXXXXXting him and the rest of us excluded him from rounds etc for the rest of the do.

So I suppose what I'm getting at is why isn't bandy a millionaire ?

everyone should put in an equal amount. There's no debate. It's usually the fussy eaters or the kids belloies who kick up a stink and for that reason they should be dis-owned[^]

leaving a tip and paying your way with the lads is an entirely different bag mate

What if the lads put forward a large tip, say £20, would you start crying.

Bandy Posted on 26/10/2010 10:52

No, I'd call them all mugs and ask them what they are doing that for when you could be spending it on beer or lap dancers.

Lap Dancers? Now there's a waste of money...

No. Like I said. They are a waste of wedge.

Lisbonlegend Posted on 26/10/2010 11:28

But youd advise your mates not to tip a waitress so they could get a bit of tittilation which would be a waste of wedge?

the waitress already gets paid for her service which is to carry food out - that is all. A lap dancer can earn a few quid more if she does a bit extra. Personally I'd keep my cash. No point sitting there with a boner on if you cant get your tail wet. Suprised you think they are a waste of cash

actually i do tip well when its deserved and get special treatment. recently tipped a taxi driver when he went out of his way and also when some poeople were carrying my bags for a week. tipped the barbers the other day cos no queue and i was out pretty quick.

as for splitting the bill in large groups. dont you just hate those people who take advantage and order the most expensive food and drinks on the menu, drink the most then split the bill equally but then complain when you wont give a big tip and they dont have the change for the tip or enough to pay their share of the bill[:D]

and when you go out with a few women for food why do they insist on getting their calculators out and working out exactly what they shiuld pay and then about 3 people want to pay seperate on a credit card

Probably says more about the female company you keep. Just proves Paula Abdul was talking rubbish all those years ago.

I'm looking at having kids now Bandy so I don't have to tip anymore when I go out for meals.[;)]

Lizards, when did you used to go out with Paula Abdul?

Lisbon:- Before she was on X factor USA.

Sas:- Just saying opposites may not always attract. I've never been out with a woman or group of women who have got a calculator out and started working out the bill.

Good luck then. You'll see oneday that twenty quid is better off in your own pocket. Chairty begins at home!

On our holiday this year with family and friends we went out for some food and the bill came to £220. There was 16 of us in we all put £20 per person. The owner came over and said to us that we had paid to much. We couldn't be bothered to work out a tip so we just gave her the £300. We were all pretty hammered like.

My financial mantra is earn more than you can spend, that way you can enjoy yourself and not worry about it. I could have a decent car if I really wanted one but for me they're a waste of money, as are houses. That is why I am happy tipping in restuarants and not worried about paying for a few bricks or a lump of metal.

Why do you think houses are a waste of money?

Lisbonlegend Posted on 26/10/2010 12:18

Cos you can't afford to tip waitresses if you are paying for a house.

a house will protect you are your children in later life - a two bob waitress wont. Think long term...

Are all you tippers going club together and get Rob_fmttm a big tip for Christmas? He's provided a fantastic forum which most use every day of the year, get to make friends, find out info first, bit of banter.

Or does he have to serve you coffee and smile before you'd do that?
