'You get paid a lot more in the US.'

That depends on what you do. My mate's a barman, he's on tips only.

7_The_Informer Posted on 19/10/2010 20:37
Job interview

I'm a scientist and on a factor of 2 more in the US in my current job than what I would be earning in the job (with exactly the same criteron and responsibilties) in the UK.

However, the cost of living I feel is actually more here than in the UK (well, at least in New York compared to when I was in Birmingham, UK) so when you factor all that in, the money left for "quality of life" is significantly more.

As for barmen/barmaids, then they can make a decent living. The usual tip is $1/drink served or $2-$3 if doing a decent sized round (3+ drinks), then if you work in a decent bar then you can make a fair amount. That's the case here in Manhattan, not sure it's the same all over the country like...

PinkPonce Posted on 19/10/2010 21:52

Ned, as a pensioner I thought you would show a credible amount of humility on this board, especially given your roots and your working class background ...

There's no doubting that your current lifestyle is one that many would long for, and whilst I can appreciate that you've been out of work for a long time, you've not exactly kept the fact that your and your partners pension contributions are favourable ...

The basic facts of the matter are that your opening post is insensitive, distasteful and this is amplified by the smiley you chose to use ...

These was absolutely no need for you to mention any salary, benefits or incentives in your post and had you merely mentioned that the interview had went well, I'd have been among the first to congratulate you, as I know how desperate you've been to get back into work ...

I have never once resorted to posting my salary on here, and posts mentioning my car are completely unrelated to this discussion ...

You can call me a hypocrite all you like, but you should take a step back and read this post again, understanding the point I am making ...

There are many people who visit this board who are no doubt struggling to provide for their families, or who are at serious risk because of the current economic climate ... Posts like this are in bad taste and you should completely understand what I am saying ...

I hope they don't shīt in your pool ... Because you could scoop it out with a net - I hope they do it on your patio so you have to use your own hands you insensitive, distasteful man ...

Weemoby ... Lol ...

Once again Ned, you can't control that burning aggression that's forever brewing inside and that no doubt stems back to a lonely night 2 kilometres under water in the company of the vice captain and a bottle of Johnsons Ph 5.5 ...

I'll gladly accept your abrupt, insulting post as an apology on behalf of the board for the disgustingly boastful opening post but I do think an edit and an apology on another thread would he more beneficial ...

I would also like to reiterate that j genuinely do hope you find suitable employment sooner rather than later, be it in this, or another role, as I do understand how hard you've been looking for work since your redundancy ...

See, this is where I am different to others on here, I bare no grudes when I've disagreed in the past, and I genuinely wish people the best ... Don't be fooled by the nature of my posts though Ned ...

The next time you're in Thornaby, I'd invite you to my home where I'd tell you to your face that you're a boastful cūnt whilst pouring you a scotch ... That offer is extended to anyone on here ...

You don't need me to explain myself though do you, because you know exactly what I mean in my posts, and we both know that's exactly what you were doing, don't we ...

My point is further emphasised by your later, agressive post directed at Evil, detailing your potential offer again, this time in pounds ... So insensitive was your frantic keyboard bashing, you even failed to realise that te wasn't even responding to your initial post ...

I think thus ones been drawn out a little too long now though ... Why not go and pour yourself an expensive rum and chill out in the hammock by the pool ... But do make sure you tell everyone as usual, not forgetting to mention that you and your dog came face to face with an alligator / crocodile / snake / lizard / bloke dressed in a Disney outfit, just in case we forget you're living the dream in America ...

Best regards and good luck ...

Ponce, I didn't want to mention it but I've recently spent the last fortnight staying as a house guest with Edward and Louisianna Katsford at their sumptuosly appointed ranch at 'Ponderosa', 17,846 Street, Nukestownville, Smackpipeston State. The hospitality afforded to me, Clive and our Uncle Albert (107) was exemplary and we wanted for nothing. In true Neddillystontingford style we communicated with the Neddigtonsson familly for a full two weeks via the medium of a system of copper tubing with small voice-holes and ear-trumpets along the width and breadth of Pondersosa. I'm not certain if NedsXXXXXXsworths imploring of 'Mr Christian' was real or not, nor what the order to 'dive at ramming speed' actually involved, but we marvelled at the 7 x plasma TV's and took the Jaguar out for a spin along some sort of bayou/drainage ditch. When Clive cricked his neck due to the impressive nought to sixty acceleration through the transmition at just over 1 Earth minute, Mrs Kattingtonsford was on hand to administer a brace and perform key-hole surgery. Spot on work for a trainee vetinarians assitant, and Clives distemper hasn't flared up since, either.

All in all, he never banged on about bloody aqauriums and daft arse clothes that the Crow-Man out of Gummidge would send back to the Scope shop. You daft get.

so you got a 3 litre sports car that your getting 35 mpg out of

you might as well of got a vectra then youd of had enough seats to put 5 arrseholes on instead of just 2 to trundle up n down motorways, fack me a sales rep in a beemeer sports car, now thats funny

34.0 to be precise since the last reset - just depends though doesn't it ... I've had as high as 40.0 and as low as 23.0 ... Unfortunately I no input on BMW putting such a fantastic engine in the vehicle, as I was too busy erm sales repping up and down the country ...

seems there are only 2 engine sizes but three models

2.5

3.0

and another 3.0 turbocharged

now then, if it was value for money why so coy, you seem to have issues about revealing how much it cost to have a blue and white badge

not that theres anything wrong with buying the badge of course

It aint that good MFC. Problem is 75% of the country are underpaid. Most labourets on blue book construction jobs pick up about750 a week. Cant be far off what Ned getting. But good luck to him of hes happy with that.

I'd be over the moon with 50,000 a year plus... I just read that only 10% of people earn above 44,400 and you're telling me 60,000/70,000 isn't all that good.

Fair enough if you don't think it is but it's worse than Ned to say them wages are crap. There's people reading this bored who work every hour god sends for 25,000.

If you take a look at the figures a bit closer none of them take into account contractors. Contractors have their price to pay also because there is no job security. However given a good years work even for an unskilled labourer in contracting. Earning more than 44000 before tax shouldnt be a problem. I think u would also be surprised at the amount of people who work as contractors who are able to achieve these wages.

MFC_Riverside Posted on 20/10/2010 21:21

Yeah, my mistake on that one ... I still think that 50,000/60,000 a year is within the top 15/20% of wages though. Do you think if you asked every working person the the UK more than 1 in 5 would earn that...

No chance, it's a bloody good wage.
