Little Jimmy I live in Sydney which is the most multi cultural city in the world and in my humble opinion....the best.
I think you can look at foreigners in two ways. You can be narrowminded like yourself: "i'm not trying that foreign muck, give me pie and chips", or you can think great I can try new and unusual things. Personally I know, which I find more enriching!

What, in your eyes Muttley, makes it a schithole.

Rat race. (I've punched someone for hitting me with a bag repeatedly and trying to get me to move - WHEN I WAS ALSO STUCK IN THE SAME FCUKING CROWD). I don't care if you're in a hurry - excuse me will work no matter how late you are.

Number of gangs.

Too many foreigners (EDIT - I'm making this point bacause it can feel like you are in another country due to the vast number of foreign languages) I embrace other cultures, i just find it odd that sometimes i can't find my own culture in my own country.

That's off the top of my head. I'll have a more detailed think, but i reckon by the time i do, all the points will have been made!

However, the novelty wears off and I was more than ready for off after 4 years living in central London. My job is still down there and it would make my life inifintely easier to live down there but I can't be bothered with it much anymore.

New York is comparable, definately the closest.

I would rather live in Sydney than London for the lifestyle, but to compare the two as international cities, as multi cultural mammoths, as even important, is ludicrous.

London is one of the major cities in the world, Sydney is a backwater. Cultural? It has it's moments, but multiculturally, it is not even in the same game as London.

In a belated reply to Rodders, I dislike most if not all cities. They are all crowded, dirty, filled with rude people and they are polluted. As London is the biggest city in the country (and last time I was bothered to check, one of the largest in the world) it is a bigger shidthole than any other.

I don't like cities, am not overly fond of towns and even big villages can be unpleasant, if I never set foot in another city it would not bother me in the slightest. (I type this from sunny Newcastle)

Let's be honest, the human race has pretty much ruined a rather lovely planet.

God help us if we get our hands on another! [;)]

Nero Posted on 04/10/2010 13:45

To be honest, all those cuisines were available in Hartlepool when the Tall Ships were in town.

Any decent sized city in the world would have a good array of places to eat.

As someone said though, I'd be surprised if New York wasn't classed as the most multicultural city.

grantus Posted on 04/10/2010 13:45

[:D] It takes more than a host of restaurants down King street to make a place truly multicultural.

Bloody hell, Stokesley has italian, indian, chinese, and still isn't the european city of culture just yet.

I'm not saying that there is no international representation in Sydney, but mate, you are so off the mark comparing it to London in that respect.

To put it into perspective - you can find those cuisines in your neighbourhood. On my street there are probably people from those nations and a lot more besides, living here and not necessarily running a restaurant to make a living.

There are that many people, from so many different places in London that to find a true cockney these days is not easy.

Every carriage on the underground looks like and if people actually spoke, would sound like a united nations, where in Sydney, certain ethnicities are still noticeably rare.

Sydney is a wonderful place in my opinion and in January particularly, there is no place I would rather be than sat in the domain with a picnic listening to symphony under the stars. I understand why you are defending it mate, but the cultural fight is the wrong one.

If Australia was so multi cultural, then tell me about the treatment of Aboriginies and the lost generations, tell me about how refugee boat people are treated, or even the Australian immigration policy over the last few decades.

Nah mate - as much as I love Australia and in particular Sydney, an international bastion of multiculturalism in practice, it is not.

The Marquis is my local, TC. Some of the other pubs in the area are more for students really, what with Goldsmiths being right on the doorstep. Was the other pub you were on about the Amersham Arms? I used to go in there when I first moved into the area but then, as 'Nu Rave' was born in these parts, they started painting everything neon and hiring sh*te DJ's every weekend. Me, I like conurbations which work on a human scale - Edinburgh, York, Sheffield, Rome, Stockton. City centres you can easily get around on foot, and be out of in the countryside in a matter of minutes.

London feels suffocating, like I'm drowing in a tide of humanity. And you can't get out - drive for an hour and you're still in a soulless suburbia.

It could well have been the Amersham Arms actually. Do you know the road off to the left of the main street that runs down between The Venue and another pub on the opposite corner with some benches outside? It's a small road on a bit if a hill down toasted a park area. Think it has a hostel on it. My mate lives down there - you might well know him by sight, he seems to know everyone in that Marquis

Ah, I think you're on about the New Cross Inn, TC.

It's quite good in there on occasion. They have lots of live music on, usually for a small entrance fee. It's gone a bit 'Metal' lately but it's always worth seeing a band in there. There is a hostel on the same road but I don't imagine it to be very nice to be honest.

There is a famous chippy just up from the New Cross Inn, in between there and the Amersham. Apparently Paul McCartney has been there. Twice. Very nice it is too, and the Chinese owners are very nice people.

If your mate knocks about in the Marquis then I dare say our paths have crossed. It's a proper local boozer and the owner is more than partial to the odd 'lock in'.

Recent trips which have been to see friends or on weekends away have seen my likening for the capital increase again. I'm now more relaxed when I visit, just like I was in my early 20's.

I'd have to agree with Grantus.
I would say Melbourne would be more multi-cultural than Sydney. (It's the 2nd biggest Greek city in the world - their culture is apparent).
Sydney has lots of different races of people living the Sydney lifestyle.
The most typical Aussie girl I dated had chinese parents and they ran a restaurant.

I didn't see their cultures being represented though, in a way that you see in London.

What grantus said about there are still many minorities you don't see very often is quite true. There aren't too many black people around.

I live in Tokyo the biggest city in the world. I would hazard a guess that most countries in the world are represented along with their cuisines, but I wouldn't say it is a multicultural city.

It doesn't matter what I post on here to you, if I say that the grass is green, you'd still go out of your way to disagree and try to discredit me. For why I have no idea, but that's you all over I guess.

speaking as a londerner born and bred I will say like most who live here I go from loving the place on day to hating it the next, more so the latter sadly of late.

the nightlife, attractions and sheer things to do make it the big great mess of a city that it is. You meet people from all walks of life and can see and do anything you want to from a stroll in the park, to watching the best bands and venues like brixton.

Sadly the negatives more so in recent years, is the now sheer size of population in the city due to massive waves of immigration and general growth. You cant avoid crowds and congestion in 90 percent of the city now, and for me its got out of control with more parks being taken away fo development. The citys also got ruder and that may also due to the modern world and the amount of different cultures and ethnities creating a dividing line between some people.

I still like london as its a part of who I am but the amount of people here may leave me to leaving it for good when I have kids.

London can be a nice place to visit (as long as you keep to the nicer areas) but there is no way on earth you'd ever want to live there.

Unless of course your a millionaire, then you could live in the nice areas. If you earn an average salary then you'll be stuck in one of the slums. I often have to visit the slum areas of London for my work and the place is horrible. How anyone who doesn't come from some third world shytehole would want to live their is beyond me.

Thanks to our open door immigration policy vast area of London are pretty much no go areas for white English people. Now let me be clear here, i'm not saying white English people can't go there, it's just any that are not addicted to crack or heroin wouldn't go there under any circumstances.

It's crime ridden with drugs dealers literally just walking around asking people if they want cocaine or heroin on the street. There is graffiti everywhere and when it rains you can smell the thousands of tons of XXXXXX and shyte flowing in the sewer just a few feet below street level.

Getting back to my original statement, London can be a nice place to visit but by god i would never want to live there.

great city to visit and live in but it's a different lifestyle to say living in teesside or any northern connurbation. You can live in London for months and never see any hills or fields or beaches.

Ok to work there if you don't mind spending 3 hours a day commuting to somewhere a bit softer to live.

No insecurity about employment down there though andthey have total confidence in the future, you never hear much doom and gloom like you do up here.

Good news for SotT, they're building a fabulous new sewer system down here in London. Unfortunately it will make the traffic even worse for 10 years and there won't be any money left for cleaning up the north east.

Perhaps you could show the violent crime statistics? Errr, no not a good idea.

Perhaps take a few pictures of Brockley, Hendon, Southgate, Enfield, Ilford (to name just a few of the utter shyteholes i've been to in the last 6 months) and show people how wonderful London is?

Failing that why don't you just tell us all how much money you get for taking it in the arse?

I wouldn't go as far as SOTT but there are some real no go areas in London for White English people.

Worked abit in London afew years ago, stayed in the Peckham area afew nights, couldn't wait to leave. Advised not to walk around too long by day and not to go out at all at night by afew people. I was amazed when we did venture out how there was next to no White English people. The environment itself was terrible, slum like. Says it all the local MP wore stab proof vest to walk around with police.

Then did some work at Heathrow, stayed at a Travelodge near Hounslow. Went to look for a Tesco and took a wrong turn, and the whole neighbourhood of this place we ended up was Punjabi/Indian. The street signs, the writing on shops, everything. Not a White English person in site for miles, we got daggers from alot of people when we were sat at the lights, we stood out like a sore thumb. The area was better than Peckham though, saying that I doubt you'd find worse.

I'm all for intergrating people but truth is in London you just find ghettos where you feel an outsider in your own country.

I've never felt more uncomfortable walking down a street in my life, the lad I was working with at the time was originally from Grangetown/Hemlington and quite handy so he knows how to handle himself in a rough area, but he wasnt getting good vibes at all in Peckham.

When we got the day off and visited the tourist areas of London we all loved, the tube is such a convinient way to get around when Bob Crowe isn't trying to be Arthur Scargill.

But some of the areas to live in, dear me.

It doesn't, play the race card if you want but the fact is London has alot of areas were if your White and English and you wind up in those areas it can be quite an intimidating atmosphere.

I like to visit it - so much to do and see - I have never worked there though. It always seemed too expensive to live there. I should have gone there in the mid 80s and bought a place.

I am lucky that I can stay there in a nice area for nothing for short periods.

viv_andersons_nana Posted on 05/10/2010 00:39

I wasn't the one who brought race/skin colour into it.

You're as likely to get beaten up in Grove Hill as you are Peckham, and the likelihood of being attacked in either area is very small indeed.

Harriet Harman wore a stab-proof vest when she walked round it with a group of police and she's their MP.

I went to New York last year and walked around Queens which like everywhere has it's more hairy areas , but is a truly multi-cultural place made up of Whites, Blacks, Asians and Latinos. I felt far, far safer walking the streets of Queens than alot of the residential areas of London, especially Peckham.

viv_andersons_nana Posted on 05/10/2010 01:00
People Who Dislike London??

That Harriet Harman/stab-proof vest thing was, by her own admission, one of the biggest gaffes of Labour's spell in Government. Quite why her team of advisers allowed her to a)even consider wearing it, b)actually let her to go into her constituency whilst wearing it, and c)even entertain the idea of it being anything other than wholly inappropriate, completely misguided and downright offensive is an absolute mystery.

I've lived here for four years and, with regards to crime, found it to be no different to any other town or city in the UK.

libardi Posted on 05/10/2010 05:09
People Who Dislike London??

I lived in Brixton briefly when I was 24 and loved it - good local pubs, great live music and clubs. A jump on the bus or tube into town for some of the best museums and galleries in the world - usually free, great historic little streets and buildings in the city of London to explore.

Then I returned 10 years later with my two kids and suddenly the bus journeys were long and unpleasant, and the funny characters you would see in the street suddenly seemed more menacing.

London hadn't really changed but my circumstances had and I was looking at it through very different eyes. Its a great place to party but not a great place for families
