Dont you think his XXXXXX attitude in an post match interview reflects him and the club and his way of management, this is no doubt reflected on the training pitch, dressing room and so on.

It says a lot about his style of being a manger and we are reaping that right now.

XXXXXX attitude = XXXXXX tactics - XXXXXX team =XXXXXX postion in the league.

ron_manager Posted on 02/10/2010 18:31
Take drugs, drink smoke!

His comments really are an insight into his management style and betray the arrogance he holds in himself and in his team building ability.
Even in my humble NHS job if I responded to any question in that manner during a public event I would be reprimanded and at the very least warned about my conduct.
Its not acceptable! if he wants to act like a vertically challenged spoilt brat he should just funk off to his tartened walled nursery!

You're getting your knickers in a twist over throw-away comments, because he's failing on the pitch, and nothing else.

I've heard dozens of interviews over the years with hacked off managers given flippant, one word answers, because they'd rather not be answering daft questions.

Fair enough if you want him out based on results, but don't get yourself all bent out of shape over an irrelevant radio interview.

It's not for me or anyone else to put words in his mouth but as a manager of any kind, you should not come out with comments like that in public

It is of course laughable what he said, but in the right place at the right time

skiprat Posted on 02/10/2010 19:27

What he said didn't bother me really but he should be intelligent enough to realise that when your job is on the line and after yet another poor result the worst way to respond to that is to be a smart arse and not give the people paying his wages any insight into his thoughts on the game.

We all know he doesn't like doing interviews so why not send someone else out to do them?

My main problem is the boring sound bite reporters asking them the questions in the first place.

DowningAlbion Posted on 02/10/2010 19:28
Take drugs, drink smoke!

He is famous for making sarcastic comments in press conferences FFS. There are e-mail circulars going round the internet with all his best quotes on them. Surely you've seen them and laughed?

It is a humerous comment indicating the strain the job puts on the manager when things aren't going well. At the end of the day, he doesn't even drink alcohol, it was just a joke

Pretty much spot on. The answers didn't really bother me at all but they were very unprofessional and maybe not the best time to be so flippant as some are rather sensitive at the moment.

I actually think he might want away, he has the look of a dead man walking.

You can defend the bloke to the hilt if you want, and I have done on here, but some things are indefensible. He needs the fans now and that's not the way of going about restoring their confidence in him.

Why not come out and say that Robson was unprofessional, it cost us the game and it will be dealt with? What's wrong with that? He should be interested, but the impression he is giving now is that he really could not care less about this club or its fans and is just turning up and getting paid very well for doing it.

Appleton, that's not the point though is it? Think the reply was based on humour, so I wont get all blousey and wave me hands in the air. Most people on Teesside either take drugs or smoke or drink alcohol, so lets not get all saintly eh? That said, Strachan should realise the media are a route to speak to the fans, so should show more class.

I have known Ali for 20+ years now and whilst he may have his faults, he is passionate about this club. I haven't heard him react the way he did on air yesterday for a long long time. To describe it as "po faced" is missing the point completely. And this is coming from someone who has consistently defended Strachan on this board. Here's another take on his various interviews post-match yesterday - he does not care. It wasn't because he was so gutted after the result, it wasn't him trying to be clever, he just does not give 2 hoots about this club because he knows he won't be around too much longer.

speckyget Posted on 03/10/2010 10:14

If he wasn't interested in Robson's explanations, fine, say that. Tell the fans that he doesn't care why Robson thumped the guy, it shouldn't have happened and he'll deal with it. Tell the fans how he is going to start putting things right. Tell them what is "fundamentally" wrong.

Or give them the impression that you could not care less, that you treat people like sh*t and are screwing this club.

I'd respectfully suggest it's you who's missing the point by taking everything he said literally. The guy was clearly hacked off. If BBC cub reporters can't handle a bit of prickliness they should consider an alternative profeession. I didn't think Strachan's remarks will have Stewart Lee looking over his shoulder, but sheesh - I thought Teessiders were made of sterner stuff than this.

Boromad Posted on 03/10/2010 10:35

Then you clearly do think that is the way to conduct yourself and clearly must be mad. Thankg god you're not running the club.

Crikey. It's all gone Presbyterian.

You sound like the manager. In fact....

Boromad - do you think calling other posters "mad" is a correct way to conduct yourself?

One standard for you and one standard for the manager?

Both rude IMO, but not capital offences.

Boromad Posted on 03/10/2010 10:51
Take drugs, drink smoke!

Oh come on Maw. I can't see how any so called Boro fan could possibly think that the interviews our manager gave yesterday were appropriate. If I went out and said something like that to customers, client etc, I don't think the boss would be particularly happy, do you? That's the point I was trying to make. Anyone who thinks otherwise can't be serious, mad or not.

Speckyget is quite right. I was more disappointed with Brownlee's suggestion that the interview evidence of the manager's callous disregard for Boro fans. Strachan often comments on his admiration for (and sympathy with) the fans and acknowledges their frustration. It's unfair to use a few flippant but misjudged remarks to suggest that the manager is disinterested with football matters, such as Robson's sending off. He's obviously taking this very seriously.

speckyget Posted on 03/10/2010 10:56
Take drugs, drink smoke!

I'm clinically depressed and find your flippant remarks about madness to be inappropriate as I don't know what.

Boromad Posted on 03/10/2010 10:57
Take drugs, drink smoke!

Brick, I take your point. I just don't believe that he is interested anymore. That might not be his fault, but that's what I think is happening.

I didn't hear the Tees interview, but I'm not angered by his reported words. The interview with the BBC 5 live reporter though was uncomfortable listening. Reasonable questions that I would have liked to have heard a geniune answer to, not smart arse comments and long silences.

When it cut back to John Inverdale, there was a long exhalation of breath followed by 'well, I suspect they were both very glad that interview eventually came to an end'.

Strachan is clearly under stress, but should be more professional to the media as its all part of the job.

He hates the media but no need for sulks. Got to say that I would be a bit chewy with some of the chunts.

If it's a successful manager, the media will tolerate immature or spikey behaviour in interviews. In fact they'll tolerate not giving interviews at all.

Typical rookie interviewer asking him stupid questions at a bad time, but strachan prob went a bit far...

A basic lack of professionalism on Strachan's part, he just comes across as an objectionable little g1t.

Hardly the time for such stupid behaviour.

Not content with having to put up with a manager whose public relation skills are questionable, the message board has to put up with the sectarian rants of MSquared

Be worth listening to Ali Brownlie tonight, sure the topic of conversation will continue. He seemed quite hacked off on Saturday.

Bandy Posted on 04/10/2010 11:29

Ali is peeved because Strach is very unco-operative and he is used to managers bending over backwards to feed out ariwaves with drivel. Who enjoyed listening to gareth? Answer, nobody. Now we have Strach, still people complain. Whatever happened to free speech? Do people really hang on to the managers every word? The evidence of where we are at is on the pitch

What a plank.
Get rid, I don't want to hear shyte like this, ok if your top of the league by a few points, it sounds eccentric and fairly humorous, but when you are on the brink of a relegation fight it just sounds idiotic, what the fcuk do the players think?

Get a life, sack him for that comment??? pathetic.

the players probably think fair play, at least he isnt slagging us in public. He could have verbally lashed robson live on air but he didnt - he protected him and by saying he isnt imterested is bollox - of course he's interested. Fergie does the same

On the contrary, the 'not interested' comment for me was the same as a public b0ll0cking - i.e., doesn't matter what the stupid get has to say on the incident.

I think that is a great response. FFS when did we become so pc and lose our sense of humour? It's turning into one, boring fcucking world! Half u fcuckers have probably drank schitt loads, smoked and snorted and now u have kids u turn all pc. Hypocrisy. Big deal if kids hear it. It's about time you stopped driving them to school, wrapping them in cotton wool and telling them that every stranger wants to bugger them!

Now I've had the chance to reflect on WGS's comments, here's my view;

The "not interested" line was more to do with him not being interested in Robbo trying to justify his retaliation. I assume Strachan is fuming with Robbo. It's not that he's "not interested" in an incident that changed the game. Of course he is.

The bit about drinking, smoking and taking drugs should be taken in context. Strachan is a very clean-living guy and doesn't do any of the above. He is tee-total and I would imagine tries to encourage his players to do likewise. He certainly wouldn't tolerate any player taking drugs. I would also guess that he woudldn't want his players drinking much or smoking. As pointed out, he made a similar comment when at Southampton about becoming an alcoholic.

Brownlee was just frustrated at getting smartarse answers though. As he said, when being interviewed, that the manager's chance to speak to the fans. WGS should see it as not just speaking to the interviewer, but to all those Boro fans listening in. Smartarse answers after a disappointing result certainly border on being disrespectful and give fans ammunition in thinking WGS doesn't take our current situation seriously.

I think the "I answered that in the last question" to one of the interviewer's questions was also a bit rude and annoyed Brownlee.

Shocking to think that kids may be exposed to this, why not ban the Gazette as well, putting stories about drug dealers and alcoholics on the front page - this publication should be on the top shelf!

Take drugs, drink smoke!

In australia a rugby league player who said fkucking ref on camera after a game, succesfully argued that it was a result of having a camera thrust in his face in the heat of the moment....he beat suspension. I think the same applies to GS. He was pished off, perplexed, bewildered so what do you expect. FFS get a sense of humour.

I was furious when I first heard it live but upon reflection, when I think back now I think it was funny and I can't fault him really, what was he supposed to say? The same old sh!te that we always moan about on here anyway?

ProudToComeFromTeesside Posted on 04/10/2010 13:07

you have to admit tho that after a poor result does Strachan really want to be talking to some bloke who asks stupid questions?
