Apparently, two of his former clubs, Preston and Burnley are playing tomorrow night. From a statement by Burnley in the Lancashire Evening Telegraph:
"We will be in talks with Preston to discuss what we may do tomorrow and to keep them informed."
I hope I'm wrong, but that sounds a bit ominous. I am a tad emotional to say the least as I type this. If a priest has been called, then that suggests we might have to fear the worst.
Come on Parky, pull through. Let's have some of that spirit of '86! If you believe in the big fella upstairs, or even if you don't, perhaps say a prayer for Gary. Come on Gary, you can do it.

A scorer of one of the greatest Boro goals I have ever seen. Night match - Goodison park - 35 yards out - Park end - BANG - top corner past southall (I think) I was in the terrace behind the goal going absolutley mental
fatharrywhite Posted on 10/09/2010 12:53
"Night match - Goodison park - 35 yards out "
funny you should say that as i've just watched it on youtube

Come on Parky, you can do it.
Bandy Posted on 10/09/2010 13:02
He was on Ali's show not so long back talking up the Boro and generally being a sound lad. Really hope he comes through this. He was one of my first Boro heroes and I always wished I could style my hair like his!
Shaun71 Posted on 10/09/2010 13:04
Ill never forget those 35 yard howitzers v Everton and Sunderland either!

Oway Parky, you can get through it.
fatharrywhite Posted on 10/09/2010 13:09
he survived years playing in front of the chicken run so he's a fighter
The sunderland goal was class, back in the days of the boro bugler and that flies in near enough last minute to make it 3-0 if i remember correct
Bandy Posted on 10/09/2010 13:09
yep, a sunday afternoon stroll

Shaun71 Posted on 10/09/2010 13:20
He was indeed Corcaigh. Gary Hamilton has suffered with his health in previous years too, but seems to have recovered from it, so heres hoping Parky can too.

I think Hammy had a minor stroke a few years ago, brought on by high blood pressure, I think.
Shaun71 Posted on 10/09/2010 13:29

Sad news indeed, Gary was in the year below me at St Pats in Thornaby, always had time for anybody, came back to the school alot to do end of year presentations, I'll always remember 28/5/1988, we went down to Chelsea on the "special", returned back after getting promoted and luckily escaping unscathed, needed to celebrate and we went in the Mall, all the Boro lads were in and Parko introduced me to all the lads, they all signed my programme and were as sound as a pound, how different to todays footballers. Thinking about you and you're family at this difficult time.
Datsun-Dave Posted on 10/09/2010 14:30

Used to play footie together as kids on the Tedder and Harold Wilson fields - yep the regular 15/16 a side on a sunday afternoon.
I met him in the Mall also -top bloke introduced me to all the players he was with.
Hope your Ok son!
mickymacc Posted on 10/09/2010 19:36
Shocking news,A little anecdote that might raise a smile(might have got it from FMTTM),Parky was wandering back one match from one of his forward diagonal runs (that usually finished just over the halfway line)shaking his head to himself. He passed Bruce Rioch who screamed at him "it's no use shaking your f*cking head Parkinson, get back in position",cue parky sprinting the rest of the way.
Bruce requests no swearing or throwing of missiles.
OyOySaveloy Posted on 10/09/2010 19:53
Parky was my first boro hero, the first time he scored was the one and only time Ive ever shed a tear at a football match

Mine too: a special team at a special time for the club and the town. No matter what Parky's limitations as a defender were, he gave his all and played a significant part in our rise.
Good luck Parky.

"Parky was my first boro hero, the first time he scored was the one and only time Ive ever shed a tear at a football match"
The penalty v Millwall? I remember that as one of my favourite Boro matches from my youth, swinging this way and that, before Parky stepped up to score that penalty. That was a weird moment; everyone seemed terrified of him taking it, but genuinely delighted for him when he slammed it home
Rodders_T Posted on 10/09/2010 20:30
"Part of my favourite ever Boro team"
There will never be a side like it again. It was an utterly amazing time to be a Boro fan.
I don't think I've ever felt this way about a 'stranger' being ill. Yet it doesn't feel like a stranger
COME ON PARKY!! FUKKING COME ONNNNNNNN!!!!!

Gary Gary Gary Gary Parkinson
PAULIEJ Posted on 10/09/2010 20:58
Like others have said, part of a team that was as close to the fans and town as a team could be.Somehow they united us after nearly going to the wall and gave us our spirit and belief back. Gary was an integral part of that side and as such will always be respected as a player and a man.
Good luck to the fella in his battle to get well. I am sure I speak for everyone on here when I say that the whole of Teesside wishes him well and the very best of luck on the road to eventual recovery.

Shaun71 Posted on 10/09/2010 21:39
I can echo those sentiments exactly Rodders. He was one of my first Boro heroes. We all know he wasnt the most gifted footballers weve ever had but he certainly give everything he got.
That 86-92 period was probably the best period Ive seen us going home and away. Maybe its the age I was at but you could relate to all of them.
Hopefully his recovery will come quickly, and maybe Rob could print this out and send it over to show him our thoughts.
boroman28 Posted on 10/09/2010 21:54

Responsible for one of the best pieces of defending I ever saw at Ayresome, shepherding Sheedy all the way from the edge of our box back to Southall.
Getting through this will be easy compared to that. Come on lad!

Rodders_T Posted on 11/09/2010 19:51
Gary’s teammate and fellow member of “Brucie’s Blonde Babes”, Colin Cooper, married his wife Julie on the same day as the Parkinsons. Cooper said he had already sent a message of support to Debbie Parkinson.
“I just said to Debbie that the team we had together in ‘86, the one thing I knew was that if anybody needed anybody they would be there for them. I would be willing to do anything to help Debbie, Gary and their family and I know the rest of the lads would be exactly the same - that camaraderie will always be there.”
Cooper added: “Hopefully he will pull through and get himself back to work and back to normal. Our support and help, goodwill and prayers are there for Debbie and their family.”
Fellow former teammate Gary Gill, who was also part of the ‘86 team, today sent his best wishes to Parkinson and his family.
“I was very shocked when I heard the news,” the BBC Tees pundit said. “I just hope everything will be OK. I couldn’t believe what I heard.
“I saw him last season at Blackpool when I went down to do the commentary for BBC Tees. He looked very fit and was on good form. We played together for a few years and I consider him a good friend.
“When the club was in trouble, he was one of the local lads who worked hard for the team. He’s really proud to have played for Boro.”
After leaving Boro in 1993, Parkinson enjoyed lengthy spells at both Burnley and Preston North End - who are due to face each other this afternoon. He also played for Blackpool.
Parkinson is now currently based in the North-west but is believed to still have family on Teesside.
Since the news broke, Boro fans have flooded the message boards of fanzine Fly Me To The Moon in support for Gary and his family.
Fans have also been reminiscing about Parky’s 35-yard wonder- strike against Everton in January 1990, shown on Match of the Day.
On BBC Tees last night, Boro commentator Ali Brownlee also sent his best wishes to Parkinson and his family. And former Boro defender Curtis Fleming said: “My thoughts go out to his family.”

After reading the board for years the news on Parky has finally made me register.
I started to watch the boro regularly in 1986, and Parky was my favourite player. He had blonde curtains and played right back just like me, he wasnt the most talented player in he team but he would run through brick walls for the Boro. What we would give for a few Parky's in our team right now.
I have everything crossed for you Parky, you can get through this.
borotoolong Posted on 12/09/2010 10:34
A true star of a golden era.

Good luck Parky...I'll never forget the days that you were played for us, if only we could go back to them when players were still connected with the fans.

best wishes Parky for you and your family . Puts what we consider to be a crisis ( The Boro form ) in perspective . Remember those Rioch days so well when i remember chatting to you in a pub along with the other Brucie Babes and you were so down to earth . Magic days and you so deserve to pull through this . Just to let you know that people might want to pass on their messages via the Blackpool FC website.
I've just sent mine along with a link to this thread so that they're aware that many Boro fans are thinking of him.

Go on Parky lad, get stuck in.
I have to be honest and when I saw Charlie Adam with the t-shirt I didn't realise it was "our" Parky he was on about.

Linny Posted on 12/09/2010 21:47
I started going in 88 and Parky was a big part of that team. Different game back then when you hear people talking about how down to earth they were and his mam washing his kit!!
Proper football - i used to want my hair like Parky
Good luck - hope we see you back at the Riverside some day soon.
Jonny_Ingbar Posted on 12/09/2010 21:52
We've seen some great players and some excellent teams in the Riverside era, but the team Parky was part of will never happen again - a real fans team.
joescott25 Posted on 12/09/2010 23:19
