Eugenics is the study and practice of selective breeding applied to humans, with the aim of improving the species. In a historical and broader sense, eugenics can also be a study of "improving human genetic qualities." Advocates of eugenics sought to counter what they regarded as dysgenic dynamics within the human gene pool. Specifically, in regard to the continuation of congenital disorders and factors impacting overall societal intelligence relating to the heritability of IQ.

Joshie thinks in only black and white terms. For him, the fact that Hitler liked fast aeroplanes means that everything else he did may have been just as harmless.

Eugenics promotes the idea of racial purity and has the undertones that there are certain lives that are more worthy than others.

That's pure evil but if Hitler painted a few pictures then it can't possibly be, or something.

No, oooo I dont, because of hitlers evil madness eugenics was discredited by his warped version of racial purity, I dont adhere to that.

As someone said earlier Churchill, one of our countries greatest leaders, was an advocate of eugenics does this mean he was as bad as hitler in your black and white world?

Sid, I am quite sure I wouldnt be given the snip, though after fathering a bright, well adjusted, polite son I am happy with my lot and am too old to become a father again in my opinion.

I believe that there are many people out there who shouldnt be allowed to breed another generation of feckless, idle, scrounging saps on society.

I wouldnt want people exterminated or aborted but I do think preventing some people procreating has merits and also think with the advent of the deciphering of the human genome and the developments in gene technologies etc. eugenics will become a more acceptable subject to discuss without everyone automatically equating it with the horrors of the holocaust which is only a part of the story.

Eugenics has been abandoned because it has simply been abused by many people good AND bad. They were still sterilising people they deemed as 'stupid' in the sixties in the US.

Eugenics is a hi-jacking of the idea of 'survival of the fittest' which was never intended by Darwin as meaning that some people were more genetically worthy than others. His definition of fittest was those more able to adapt to their environment, but others abuse that idea to make out that some people should be sterilised or aborted based on whatever is the popular prejudice of the time. Hitler wanted jews/gypsies and the handicapped to be killed, you want to use it to get rid of those you consider an underclass.

ooo yet again you assume wrongly that you know what I am thinking.

Eugenics has not been abandoned, far from it, examples of eugenics have been in the news such as people who have a child with a terminal illness having a second child even after previous voluntairy sterilisation in order to provide a possible donor/cure for the first child as an example.

As technology continues to improve the manipulation of specific genes surely eugenics will become a more and more discussed subject?

Do you not think the day will come be it 20 50 or a 100 years from now when traits will be chosen by parents, such as resilience to diseases, perfect and long lasting vision as well as more ephemeral ones such as hair colour etc.

"ooo yet agian you assume wrongly that you know what I am thinking."

I'm just basing my thoughts on what you are posting. And more often than not, it's pretty hateful stuff.

"Eugenics has not been abandoned, far from it, examples of eugenics have been in the news such as people who have a child with a terminal illness having a second child even after previous voluntairy sterilisation in order to provide a possible donor/cure for the first child as an example.

The science of genetics and gene therapy seem legitimate to me as they seek to be aiming to give people a full and active life when they would not have otherwise had one.

Eugenics is society determining who lives and dies which is completely different. You are being extremely disingenuous to suggest that eugenics is in some way popular as genetics and eugenics aren't the same, despite you trying to make it out that they are.

joshie Posted on 13/07/2010 23:10
The fairy jobmother tonight ch4@9

Oooo you're presenting what you think I am thinking as facts, you are wrong.

Eugenics has been responsible for lowering the likelyhood of diseases affecting specific racial groups, that is not socially determining who lives and dies.

At no stage in my support for eugenics have i said that we should determine who lives and who dies, thats your point of view to which you are entitled but not a fact.

I genuinely believe not everyone should be allowed to breed, some people are unfit to do so, they abuse neglect or ignore the children they produce. A vicious spiral continues with more unruly, idle parasites being spawned.

Because some evil madmen have used eugenics as a tool to justify exterminating people doesnt automatically equate to anyone supporting such a notion wanting the same.

Theodore Roosevelt didnt advocate genocide but did support the idea of eugenics.

Well Joshie, in this very thread you've gone from suggesting eugenics as a solution for the people in this documentary but then swiftly retracted that you were suggesting that and began vaguely making some point about eugenics in general.

The problem is, people will abuse it without even having to aspire to the levels the nazis did it and it will still be wrong because those people will not be able to help themselves suggesting it as a solution to social groups they don't like. In exactly the same way you were calling for the people in this documentary to be subjected to eugenic measures.

Thought they came across really well.

They kept their house in decent nick and were looking to get off their arses, both of them had something about them. I was genuinely chuffed for the lad that he got a job and stuck with it.

Well done to the couple, looked like decent hard working kids who just needed a chance. A lot of people in their situation are scared to take on a low paid job because they think they will have less money. Not sure he would of got that job if it hadnt been for the tv cameras mind

"I wouldnt want people exterminated or aborted but I do think preventing some people procreating has merits"

Reading your posts joshie, I'm starting to find this argument persuasive.

Apart from being a succession of unfeasible 'reveal' moments, like most reality TV, I loved this show. Salt of the earth those two, who had lost their way. Shows the danger of writing people off; shows the danger of glibly tossing round shallow catchphrases like 'Broken Britain'.

PS that debt collector was creepier than the child catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

I didnt see the programme but it sounds like it ended up showing the kids in a good light.

Most young kids are fine, they just need a bit of help sometimes and for people to see beyond the accent or the tracky bottoms tucked into the socks.

Right bunch of stuck up coonts on this thread [V]

The lad clearly wanted to work, but was scared of getting into more debt if it fell through after a week or two & didnt want a job if it meant he would be worse off than he was & how can you blame him for that when he has a kid to feed and is struggling as it is already because of past failings through agency's

Glad he found work, shame about the lass she was probably gutted

Thought they were both sound. Got on my tits when she was moaning at their reaction to interviews but this just summed up their lack of confidence which is something the whole area suffers from.

I was shouting YESSSS when he got the job like I was at a match!

Some very funny moments like when he told the interviewer that Germany was a foreign country [:D]

Good luck to all three of em plus Ive now got a new catch phrase - ISH ISH - the boxing thing he did when he got excited [^]

The fairy jobmother tonight ch4@9

Yeah I found that very strange aswell about her attitude to their interview reaction.

Trying to find work through agencies in Boro, I fully understood why he would not be excited.

The number of interviews you get sent on to fill a quota, not to mention the inappropriate jobs.

If that was his experience throughout his working life, I'm sure he would have been overjoyed at the prospect of the interview.

From experience, I've come across 1 decent job agency in Middlesbrough out of 10 I've been with, who actively took a level of interest. That was Meridian under the fly over opposite Yorkshire Bank.
The majority treat you like a expendable commodity. Having worked through agencies around the country and abroad, I was a little surprised at this approach when I came home.

What was good about this program was the jobmother took an interest in the person, learnt what skills he actually had and tried to find a job to suit.

I hope this program was far reaching in Middlesbrough.

"Supernanny "with a job at the end, thats all the program was.If the lad had lived in Liverpool would people on here have the same sympathy,i think not. They seem like a nice couple, they are a stereotype of parts of this town and not a good one at that. Why do people think those who dare to think that the couple have their priorities wrong are arrogant, stuck up or whatever. All this they just need a chance, can they not see for themselves that their demeanor and attitude is what is holding them back, sorry but hecould hardly put two words together, whose fault is that.i grew up on the street that show was filmed on and came from a large family, not once have I thought I`d rather not work even if I`d be on less money and I was out of work when I left college.

She had some insight and genuine talent for doing this stuff, but it's basically phoney because anyone who could afford to buy that level of service (sleeping on your settee etc) would not be in need of it. Moreover it is not an answer to unemployment in general.

speckyget Posted on 14/07/2010 10:44
The fairy jobmother tonight ch4@9

I don't think they're advocating everyone getting a live-in employment coach. The main messages were about the crippling impacts of unemployment on individuals and the dangers of viewing the world through Daily Mail glasses.

Dribble Posted on 14/07/2010 10:48
The fairy jobmother tonight ch4@9

The question is why become the stereotype in the first place,he even quoted that everybody round Thorntree had a Staff ,when she asked if it was part of his hardman image. It is part and parcel of the hardman image that some people worship. It has nothing to do with living perfect lives, you make your decisions in life and reap the rewards or otherwise, why should anybody carry you.Having children is a big responsibilty and incurs a huge financial cost,so why have kids they can`t afford to feed ,clothe etc. and before anybody comes in with the "accidents happen" quote, theirs enough information and access about birth control these days and surly theres no excuse

BoroGrecian Posted on 14/07/2010 11:00
The fairy jobmother tonight ch4@9

I have never have had the 'perfect life' but I'm bloody greatful for what I have.

What I have which many people don't have is a basic drive to get off my arse and go out and get a job when I have been jobless or needed a change. I try not to sit around with a 'the world is against me' mode, although yes I have done it, but I have got through it.

What irritates me is that many 'jobless' have seem intent on blaming everyone else accept themselves for their position. The help is out there YOU just have to get off your arse and find it, it won't fall into your lap and nor should it. You can only truly enjoy what you have by working hard to get it.

Dribble Posted on 14/07/2010 11:13
The fairy jobmother tonight ch4@9

Exactly Grecian, what i have I work very hard at keeping because I worked very hard to get it.if it`s the perfect life ,then thats fine by me,it`s my life and it`s the life i`ve earned, not been given, earned,by doing differant jobs over the years, training in differant things.I trained as a spark and got a City and guilds with top marks but I had no experience and was seen as a dilutey so no one would employ me,I didn`t dwell on that I got myself a job in a totally differant field and worked at that for 6 years before getting into the chemical industry. In the time is was out of work I kept myself clean and respectable and know how to carry myself.A shaven head,a swagger and hardman image will not get you through many doors.I`m sure somewhere in middlesbrough there must be a young couple in the same situation as those on the program who don`tlook and act like chavs, who must be thinking, what the fcuks going on

speckyget Posted on 14/07/2010 11:15

Dribble Posted on 14/07/2010 12:44
The fairy jobmother tonight ch4@9

Why do we have to "walk a mile in their shoes before commenting" they chose to have a child without being able to support it,he choses to live the life of a chav, plenty of people are out of work but don`t strut around with their Staff terriers and hardman walk, you get out of life ,what you put into it,unless you have been very unfortunate but being irresponsible and setting yourself up as a clear stereotype will not help your cause. The only good thing to come out of this program is that some other chav wannabe might take a leaf out of his book, smarten himself up and go looking for work instead of expecting work to find him

Couldn't warm to this couple at all, so he has sponged off the state for 2 years and she hasnt worked and now one of them has got a job we are supposed to be impressed. He was paying for pets but no other big spends in the house apart from the kid that we were paying for, so where did the money off the loans get spent. Why take on debt with no job. Only good thing about him getting a job is that his benefits have reduced.

Its not about feeling sorry for them, its about not looking down on them. Whatever you have achieved and however rightly you feel proud of yourself, millions have done better. But it doesnt make them better than you and it doesnt give them the right to lok down on you. So dont do it to others because they dont fit your own set of standards.

I grabbed it with both hands, grafted hard, studied hard on a night, got a hnc then degree and now i'm a chartered electrical engineer leading huge projects in dubai for an internaltional consultancy. some people just need direction and a bit of a shove, i have returned the favour many times in the past, bringing lads into the industry with little or no qualififctaion straight from school and putting them thro college etc....9 times outta 10 they turn out to be far better engineers than some snotty cockney graduate thats all patter and no substance.

My tale is similar to yours manhead (only I've missed the Middle East out and chased the money in some sh*tholes)...

What came to mind when I watched this (except that it was next door to my in-law's former house) is that not everybody are the same and it is far from a level 'playing field', all people do not get the same opportunities and are not blessed with the same levels of intelligence and don't come from stable backgrounds. You cannot just write people off because they don't walk & talk 'proper'!

Good luck to this couple (and daughter) I say... [^]
