It was my daughters prom last night

She looked totally stunning, I cant believe how good she looked. She had a fantastic time.

I no people will go on about the cost of such an event but you dont have to go mad. We were a touch extravagant and spent under 200. The most expensive item was her shoes and she will wear those again. The rest really is memorys and to be honest, as she had such a fantastic time, those are priceless.

Bandy Posted on 29/06/2010 10:31

Bandy Posted on 29/06/2010 10:35
It was my daughters prom last night

Not being funny but why share that on a messageboard? It's a typical woman post. get it on facebook and everyone can go "awwww, bless"

This is a testosterone fuelled messageboard and we are all pumped up now looking for a new England gaffer and you come on here posting about proms!!

susy Posted on 29/06/2010 10:35
It was my daughters prom last night

Yes its a prom, we never even got a scabby disco! Yes she did go in a limo. That was included in the 200 along with money for drinks when she got there!

susy Posted on 29/06/2010 10:39

Sas, some of the girls wore dresses that cost more than 300!!!!!!!! [:O] That is without paying for shoes and accessories and the ticket to go in and the limo and drinks when you get there.

Razmond_HWDR Posted on 29/06/2010 10:39

Bloody Hell, have the Neandrathals come out to play?

My lad went to Hardwick Hall last year, got him a decent suit and a trip there in a Lamborghini - that bit he didn't know about! Was like winning the Carling Cup when it pulled up outside.

Come on chaps, throw the flint axes away and embrace the new UK, we are the 51st state doncha know?

Ouroboros Posted on 29/06/2010 11:36
It was my daughters prom last night

Isn't all this just parent oneupmanship?

I read about some Scottish parents who wanted to hire a helicopter for her kid to arrive in.

Typical American behaviour that created a generation of neurotic mini-adults and allows the parents to shout "I have considerably more money than YOW!!!!"

Bandy Posted on 29/06/2010 11:38
It was my daughters prom last night

harsh but true

susy Posted on 29/06/2010 11:41
It was my daughters prom last night

It can be and is in some parents minds oneupmanship, I personally hate that. Whe my kids were little I was walking with a couple of mums who were talking about going to next and principles for their clothes etc, I eventually had had enough and told them I bought most of my clothes from charity shops! I wouldnt care but it was true at the time. That shut them up!

It was a general observation susy, I'm glad that your daughter enjoyed herself.

I just don't like forced Americanisms; Proms, Trick or Treat, holidays are a-comin' at Christmas, etc.

It was my daughters prom last night

Hey Ourboros, I was just talking generally too. I agree with you, im sure there was a lot of oneupmanship yesterday, its just something I dont subscribe to.

As I said, if it was called a Ball, people wouldnt object to that, its the same thing however. I like halloween, i like the way my neice dresses up and comes around our estate with us cos its great here... her words [:D]

susy Posted on 29/06/2010 11:52

anything that helps bring people together, families and communities is in no way a bad thing.

Some miserable gits around,if any parent wants to spend 100,200,400 of their hard earned on their child ,so be it,why is it oneupmanship, maybe they just like the finer things in life, instead of pi$$ing the money up the wall they spend it on their children. The children may also learn that hard work can get you the finer things in life or you can spend whatever makes you happy be it 20 or 400,by neice bought a dress for 400 for her prom but decided not to wear it,instead opting for an 25 outfit from town,my brother did not bat an eyelid because it was what my neice wanted, she sold the dress and recouped her money, let people be,if you don`t like the idea of proms don`t get involved but don`t berate something the kids look forward to.

You came on telling people what you spent. Why not just say my daughter looked lovely for her school prom(disco).I can't understand why the schools encourage this, did the parents on benefits line the route and cheer?. Hardwick hall and other such venues are not necessary for a bunch of 16 year olds to have a leaving do,do the schools get a pay off.A load of one upmanship shyte,I literally blame the parents.[V]

Glad to hear your baby enjoyed herself, Susy ...

The Prom .. definitely another Americanism which has invaded the shores of Britain, and I'm not keen on this erosion of the British way of life. I can remember the school discos we used to have at Acklam Hall, back in the early 70's. Darkened dinner room, chairs all round the walls, Deep Purple blasting out, and staging a distraction while we opened a window, lowered down a length of string, and hoisted several bottles of cider up into the room ...

It was my daughters prom last night

I think the schools have taken this sort of thing out of school because of exactly what used to happen, such as people secreting themselves off for "fun" and drinking.

As far as me putting a figure on what I spent, I didnt say it to show off because I spent a lot, I did it to let parents no that they can do it for that figure or even a little less! As I said, her shoes cost a lot, we could have got cheapys which would have looked good even though her feet would be a ball of blisters 1 hour in... us ladys have all been there at some stage.

Looking a cost for a boy: ticket 20, Suit 50, Shirt 5, Shoes 25, Tie 5, plus money for drinks comes to about 115. That is on a tight budget and not joining in with the limo stuff etc.

I thought I did well! Sorry I offended you Mickymacc with my crassness.

Only after reading this thread, I have realised we now have Proms in this country...or even school discos at the end of senior school!!!. I can never rememeber have any disco at St Micks ever...would have just been a mass brawl , plus a lot of the girls were up the stick anyway by end of the 5th year, so woulnnt have a looked right I guess

People complain on here about 200 for a season ticket for a 16-21 year old at the Riverside, but spend that on a dress that might be used only once.

I suppose if they enjoy the night its better value that last season's season ticket.

Glad it went well susy.
i was a bit sceptical about Proms but when it came time for my two to do it I was very proud when I saw the girls all done up and looking so happy.
Was a bit guilty though at how much i spent especially as some of the girls friends families were a bit short of cash and i was worried they would feel a bit awkward. But as you say it can be done for a reasonable amount.

It was my daughters prom last night

Mrs. Foggy and I have a nephew of 9 and a niece of 6 and over the years we've got to know some of their friends' parents.

The ever-escalating rivalry between the parents over the last 9 years has been jaw-dropping. They all go to each others' birthday parties and each party has to bigger, more lavish and far more expensive than the last one they all went to. They all try to outdo each other NOT only on birthday presents - but on the contents of the Goody Bags they give the kids to take home afterwards. I kid you not.

Parties have included enormous bouncy castles, magicians and even pony trekking. And they constantly try to outdo each other with the cars they use to take their kids to and fro, which have unerringly been ever-larger 4x4s as the years go by.

I was happy with jelly and ice cream, pass the parcel and pin the tail on the donkey.

Funnily enough, my sister-in-law was round the other night, showing off photos of her young 'un in her prom dress. She looked very pretty, granted, but when my sis-in-law said the dress had been a "bargain" at 200 instead of the RLP of 400, I couldn't help but use the words more, money & sense, at which she displayed the same sense of self-indignance as some above.

She admitted she probably wouldn't wear it again, and the do itself had cost 40, cost for limo, spending money (3 for a bottle of Coke), etc, etc.

She was also a little too gleeful for my liking that some of the 'poorer and uglier' kids hadn't gone, the snotty cow. Like I said, in my opinion shameful oneupmanship.

Her daughter had also said that most kids were or got drunk, and the usual cliques of weeping females in the bogs. Sound like money well spent.

I cant believe this is still going on!!

At the end of the day, my daughter had a wonderful time, her friends and her all have many very happy memories now. They were posting on facebook yesterday "this time last night we were..." That says enough for me.

Some parents spent a lot some didnt but I didnt hear anyone be nasty about each other, or Lord it over each other, Im sure that went on at some point but it didnt spoil my little girls night. She absolutely loved dressing for a night out and when there all the photo taking and generally being with all her school friends for the penultimate time.. the next time they will all be together is results day!

As far as people spending money on their children, it is a choice, either do it or dont, whatever. I decided to spend within a budget and was glad to, especially when she was so happy. I would do it all again.... Thank goodness she is my youngest though [:D]

As a school function what does it do for the kids who have parents who just cannot afford to spend such money?

I personally did not get to go on school trips abroad etc so me going to a prom in a suit or any new clobber would have been very unlikely.

Promoting such extravagance in youngsters cant be a good thing surely.

susy Posted on 30/06/2010 19:30
It was my daughters prom last night

I really dont no what parents do who cant afford this sort of thing, I guess the kids will have to go without. There were a few who couldnt go due to bad behaviour so not everyone went. I would guess the ones who didnt go will have justified it to themselves and I wish that this wasnt the case and that they could go.

This will be controversial but maybe it might inspire the kids who couldnt afford it to do their very best in the work place so they dont have to deny their children school trips and proms. Sometimes there just are things in this life you cant afford so you dont do it, a little like sports day if you dont win, it teaches you a little about life.

One of the worst post I have ever read on FMTTM. You come over a bit snobby, possibly not intended.

Easy to take the high ground when you have the cash isn't it [;)]

But I wont say any further as your post was intended to be provocative so wont bite, but needless to say I wouldnt mind you coming face to face with some of these families that are worse off than you and stating the views from your post.

Maybe those from families with little cash will grow up better than those from families who pay fortune for a dress and a limo and so on, they will learn the value of cash and hard work and not have every thing given to them, maybe that is how they will work harder , because they wont have everything given to them on a plate.
