See Cattermole quite a lot as we have mutual friends. Bit of a tit, but can be alright sometimes. Saw Woody in the town a few years ago being a XXXXXX, but I think he was just drunk.

Aside from the boro players i'm actually mates with who I won't name, Ray Parlour and Franck Queudrue were the soundest. Ray was just a really nice bloke and Franck was just Franck[:D]

Not a very interesting story really. He just went into the back of my mates car (his fault completely) kicked right off, gave it the whole "don't you know who I am" nonsense and threatened to sue him saying he could have ended his career etc. When my mate tried to explain to him that it was him who went into the back of him he went right up to him and squared up to him. He is an absolute man mountain.
I really couldn't see where Ugo was coming from as it was him who went into the back of my mate.

Oh and a few months later he went into my little brothers school and apparently was there for all of 5 minutes and wouldn't sign autographs, pose for pictures etc. Just handed out some award and left.

Jimmy Phillips and footballer in same sentence?

He has contemporary Boro written all over him, utter shight and now I discover he was ignorant.

My mate's brother was a pro at Boro and often I'd be sat next to Irving Nattress on match days (miserable cvnt), Derek White, Hendrie were chatty and friendly. Coops was quiet but always looked p issed off, no doubt by all his injuries.

Colin Ross and Gary Hamilton were class albeit always out of their skull when I met them.

Gilly's always been sound, but a bit of a dik as that's where his brain used to live [;)]

David Shearer in the Pig + Whistle, drunk but friendly always (playing pool)

Mark Proctor and Hodgy - sound.

Micky Angus, nice lad.

Rieziger in the airport - arrogant tosser.

Steve Mclaren, very friendly and prepared to engage (until he became England manager) [;)]

Ever met a Boro player and thought: What a *nob?

I once got talking to Robbie Mustoe in the club shop after a home game (this was a couple of years after he'd left Boro). Absolutely sound as a pound and very down to earth. Got the impression he'd have been happy to talk all day. As it turned out, it was me that had to make my excuses and end the conversation as I wanted to get home, get me tea and get out as it was Saturday night.

I've met a few players briefly and it's not always possible to guage someone's personality from a quick exchange of pleasantries.

As for Kelham O'Hanlon, I've met him a couple of times and he came across as a sound lad. On one occasion I was at Ayresome Park during half-term to try and get some autographs. He asked me to give him my autograph book and he'd sort some autographs out for me. He returned a few minutes later with several signatures added to my book.

I bump into David Mills from time to time in the Rudds and he's a genuinely nice bloke too.

Paul Wilkinson - toss-pot

J Hendrie - Cracking bloke

Higgy - funny friendly fella

Phil Whelan - super super friendly guy, saw him in a club in Manchester years after he played for us. Chatted for ages, told me stories about the big divide during the robbo years between the home grown lads and the foreigners.

Not met many to talk to, but those I have were all great.

Tony Mowbray - Nothing but respect for the man. A giant who has never lost touch with his roots or his principles.

Craig Johnston - Top top bloke. One of the most humble guys I've met, considering his achievements in a mumber of fields.

Julio Arca - Friendly, likeable feller who really cares about his football.

Danny Coyne - A true gent.

Alan Comfort - Forearmed me in the chops on the field of play, sincere and humble guy off the pitch.

I met Tony Mowbray when he was a 17 year old helping out along with other apprentices and young professionala, at an Ayresome Park open day. Plenty of negatives - here's a contrast:

Willie Maddren was a lovely bloke - had lots of time for you and was always approachable. Perhaps because he had a sports shop in Stockton it grounded him and made him appreciate what he had.

Garry Macdonald - Sound lad, he always had time for the fans at Darlington anyway.

Bernie Slaven - Met him a couple of times when he was at Darlo, sound bloke, but wasn't very complimentary about his time at Feethams. He actually admitted his back had gone and couldn't play 90 mins!

Not a Boro player but my dad always goes on about how Peter Beardsley is the nicest and funniest man he has ever met. Said he's been to after dinners where he's been on and he's like a professional stand up.

My dad always tells the story of when he randomly bumped into him at Oxford Circus and starting talking to him like they were old mates, but Beardsley didn't have a clue who he was but just went a long with it.

I will vote for Pally too as a right nob.

Am going to say Mark Burke and Paul Kerr too! When I was 10 I was at Kick 90 tournament in Billingham. Highlight of week was meeting two Boro players and indeed it was them. Foolishly I bought a boro poster and asked them if they would get Boro players to sign it. They said they would and my mum gave them around 4 for the postage. Never got my poster though!! [cr]

Must say have met Woody on a number of occasions and has always been sound. Zenden too a nice fella and Keith O'Neil a legend of a bloke. Friends of my parents live near Chris Riggot and they say he is totally sound. Really loves the club, almost as though he is a Tees-sider. [^]

Bumped into Cox in the Tontine one night following a game - I applauded the team performance and he uttered something arrogant in his southern accent as a pathetic riposte - nob.

He was with Gordon McQueen: sound down to earth bloke

Andrew Davies - a bit of pr at and immature but decent lad

Best I've had a discussion with was Graham Kavanagh - what a nice lad.

Always thought Curtis Fleming was arrogant and aloof, but later found him to be friendly but a bit shy.

Agnew is a decent bloke, chatty and down to earth Yorkshire man.

Yep, there seems to be a certain theme running for Mr Pallister.

I was an invited guest to play golf at Eaglescliffe, a few years ago. I was on the tee with Pallister and I said a polite "Hello Gary", to which he promptly turned his back and started talking to the people within the group with whom he was playing.

The Eaglescliffe member, with whom I was playing, then told me that he was noted for his behaviour and it was quite the norm for him to "blank" others, on a regular basis.

Met Coops at a Maximo Park after show party a few seasons ago. He seemed a nice bloke but when he asked me what my prediction for the season was I said I just hope we survive (we were down in the bottom half, struggling) he got very agitated and demanded that fans need to be more positive. I wish i could've spoke to him after May last year.

I have had stories from mates who were in Bobby Murdoch's pub in Scotland and have said what a top bloke he was.He gave them free drinks and was the perfect host and talked fondly of the Boro.

I have always felt a bit guilty about how we treated him when he was our manager with sit down protests and fans running on to the pitch to confront him. I still have vivid memories of the fan running at him and throwing his scarf at Bobby who then walked over and picked up the scarf and put it on.

It may be a bit late now to say sorry for all that abuse that I was part of but I suppose I was young and daft at the time.

Bobby Murdoch (a true gentleman)

Stuart Ripley, Derek Whyte, Paul Wilkinson, John Hendrie, Jamie Pollock, Jon Gittens, Curtis Fleming, Tommy Wright, Stephen Pears, Willie Falconer, Robbie Mustoe, Steve Vickers, Chris Morris- i met them all at Junior Reds meetings in the early 90's and thought they were all great. Got all of their autographs and numerous photographs taken with them.

At one meeting, Alan Moore was the guest and he ended up on our quiz team. After the quiz, he blatantly fixed the raffle so my ticket came out... i won a signed ball. Brilliant[^]

Phil Stamp used to live across the road from me in Park End and used to come out for a kickabout with us from time-to-time. Seemed sound, but was pretty quiet.

My Grandad met Stampy, Gazza and Chris Evans in the Newcastle House one Saturday night and said they were all sound, bought him a drink and gave him some of their Indian takeaway.

Met Bernie Slaven a few times and have absolutely nothing but respect for him. Always had time for a chat and signed autographs.

I did meet Kieron Dyer when i lived in Newcastle, he was out on the Quayside with Jermaine Jenas. Dyer was an absolute tool.

I've always perked up everytime I've met Bernie - always a good lad, ditto Curtis. Even Neil Cox and Pally had time for me when I've met them but you never can tell.

The only bad one I've had was Keith O'Neill who actually tried to start on me in the Tall Trees one night when he was out of his box. Asked me who I thought I was looking at etc, even gave me a light push in the chest.

Luckily for him Alan Moore, also psd, dragged him away to a taxi before I finished his career a couple of years earlier. I'm no hard case but as we all know, he's made out of Balsa Wood.

I met Phil Stamp a few weeks ago when I was walking my dog, a husky and daft as a brush - he insists on sniffing every dog he meets then walks away - Mr Stamp had his dog with him, a Weimeraner (not sure if that's spelt right) which was on a lead and the mouthful he came out with to me about my vicious dog had to be heard to be believed. I didn't realise til then that f*****g was a joining word!!! Not a nice man at all, but his Dad is always pleasant when I see him around Doggy.

As people have mentioned non boro players...

I used to drink coffee with Davor Suker as we have a mutual friend... most Saturday mornings...and he's a cracking bloke... met Boban (in his resturant/bar) Bilic (his office was next to mine when he practiced law) and Boksic (in his cafe in Split) quite a few times and all seem nice chaps. Boksic in particular was especially friendly when I said I was from Middlesbrough and said he enjoyed it here, but he suffered a lot of injuries.

Ian Baird, not unsurprisingly, was an ornry old critter the night I met him at a supporters club bash at The Kirk whilst he was here. He was wearing a horible, wooly, green, yellow and red pattern dress jacket that looked at least a couple of sizes too small with jeans that fit no better and I strolled up and asked him if there was any truth in the rumour that he was going to Hearts. "No there f**king well isn't" he growled "I'm f**king sick of being asked, now f*** off." I just said "Sorry like," and did as he requested. 9 days later he joined Hearts.

I used to go put to mall quite a but in the early to mid 90s and saw many of the players in there one night after we had played leeds away (the 3-0 game anyone remember frank strandli), I was at the bar and next to was Tommy Wright and then I noticed a few of the others around him wilko nicky mohan and willia falconner had come back down after just joining I think it was motherwell....

We got talking as you do waiting at the bar and i said i thought we had played well told him I had just got back from the game, and he was one of the nicest down to earth people you could meet.. his exact words were we were fkin shoite ... then continued to just say how bad the team had played..

John hendrie was out as well but when i asked where pears was he said have you seen his wife would you leave that at home...

Slightly off topic, but this thread has reminded me off the day we beat Sheff Wed 8-0. Me and my mates went to the Yellow Rose after the game and at about 7.00pm in came Bobby Murdoch, Stuart Boam and their wives.

Bobby pinched my mate's scarf and the 4 of them sat at the bar (can you imagine that happening now?)

When they left, Murdoch returned the scarf, shook all our hands, kissed all the girls and signed autographs - top man!

Stewie and James M couldn't have been nicer -talked at length about the Boro and football/life in general - really nice kids.

Andrew Davies came across as a borderline psycho - extremely arrogant and itching for an argument. Which in a lad of his age was a bit of a surprise.

Met Jason Gavin and Andy Campbell in The Rudds once. I beat Jason Gavin at pool.

The only arsehole Boro player I've ever "met" was Downing. I didn't really say anything to him, I just acknowledged him. However, somebody who was stood near me tried to talk to him and Downing just gave him a bit of mouth.

[:D] that sounds gay as XXXXXX but what I mean is I think he was feigning trying to get Graeme Fordy's attention, but walked throuh the gate and didn't come back.

Boro and non Boro players wise; my two year old neice was in Manchester Childrens hospital with leukemia and Southgate was superb and letter and a signed kit.

My brother said Van Nistelrooy was also superb and apologised for scoring against us. (1-0 to them and their ground in 02 I think) Giggs and Beckham turned up at a later date with Victoria, but gave the impression it was just for the cameras and what not.

My mate lives on the Quayside in Newcastle and he use to always see teams that were staying in the hotel. One day he walked past the West Brom squad taking a leisurely stroll. Being a huge Boro fan he went over to Mowbray and wished him good luck and told him he was a Boro Legend and offered a hand shake. Mowbray didn't say a word and left my mate hanging on the handshake. My mate was gutted!

Though to be fair, when I use to go to the Junior Reds meetings at Coatham Youth Club he was always a top bloke and was really nice to everyone.

I once drunkenly bothered Robbie Stockdale out in Redcar and he was great. It was just after the Arsenal FA cup Semi final defeat and he was telling me how amazing the fans were on that day. Talked to him for about 5 mins and he was really nice. A lot nicer than i would have been if i was a pro footballer getting harrassed by a drunken fat bloke in a Redcar nightclub.

Saw a few of the Boro players in the Boro square in Eindhoven as they were stood right near us. Wheater, Graham, Kennedy and a few others. Danny Graham was hammered and he kept touching up Haly McQueen who was covering it for Sky Sports!
