i will say it again aswell...once rooney puts in the performances he has this year for a good few seasons then he can be talked about in the same league as this fella. consistently gets over 30goals a season and ends up with a bagfull of assists.

this is not saying rooney, ronaldo etc are not class because they are. but this guy is different gravy!

The Spanish league is pretty much as close as you will get to the Premier League.

Here is Messi's goal record for Barca

2004– Barcelona 133 appearances, 79 goals

And this is for Argentina

2005– Argentina 43 apperances, 13 goals

His International goals do not look all that impressive to be honest, well when its compared to his record for Barca.

27 in 25 games. Not shabby I admit. Youll probably add the cup totals. Do you still read your Panini albums, it is quite pathetic for a 35 year old bloke

Threads like this are really entertaining.

We have one side of the fence accusing anyone who thinks Rooney is the best player, of being a closet ManU fan.
The accusers are really just bitter closet Liverpool fans.[;)]

We do have the odd intelligent football analyst on here, like me and maybe onthemap too.

ste_north_stand Posted on 21/03/2010 22:29
I'll say it again......LIONEL MESSI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't say i've seen a lot of Argentina but from what i have seen it looks like Messi plays a totally different role, not as high up the pitch and much wider. That maybe would account for his goals to games ratio being less than for Barca.

Obviously you see them 2 the most but over the course of the season i reckon i've seen most of the sides at least a few times and i watch the highlights program every week. Just to keep this discussion going a while longer, I'll throw a different angle on it.[^]

I'm sure we all remember the year Zola got the PFA or FW, whichever it was. Juninho was a class above anything else in the premier league that season.

Taking this further, (we need the stattos to check this) I think Ronaldo won World Player. He was either with Barca or Inter, and I think he won the Cup Winners Cup.

Juninho was the best plpayer in the world that year.[;)]

Hows that for keeping an argument going.

No you haven't though.

For whoever questioned Messi's international form:

Apparently Maradona isn't too keen on giving him the limelight. I've read in a few places that Maradona is somewhat worried that Messi will take his crown and as a result, isn't using him as he should. If it's true, it doesn't surprise me.

I watched the Zaragoza highlights today and Messi was on another planet. Absolutely unreal.

In my opinion, he's the best in the world.

Ronaldo plays for Ronaldo. That's it. He's not a team player and generally, he doesn't perform in the big games.

Rooney (at the minute) has the lot, plus team work. All you have to do is look at the goal he scored against Arsenal recently. Unreal.

Messi, however, is a different beast all together. He's the complete packet, no doubt about it. Skill, pace, can do it on the big stage, team work. Everything.

As for Iniesta: were all these people claiming he was the best in the world BEFORE last season? I doubt it. Nobody ever spoke about him. As soon as the press start bigging somebody up, people follow. Get your own views.

bobby_pastrami Posted on 22/03/2010 22:34
I'll say it again......LIONEL MESSI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, lets not forget age here. Messi is still only 22 and at that age, Rooney and Ronaldo looked like cart horses compared to him.

Hercules Posted on 23/03/2010 08:42
I'll say it again......LIONEL MESSI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In all seriousness, you're all entitled to your opinions. No matter how wrong they are.

Rick, the fact that 2 have 'links to Man U' (although, still claiming credit for anything Ronaldo does is strange) is just a lucky coincidence as all the Rooney-bumlicking media look rather stupid.

onthemap, I thought it was OK to judge a player purely on how many goals he scores. That's the way it goes with you and Aliadiere.

I agree that it can be hard to compare players in different positions when considering who the best in the world is. Hargreaves was a terrible example though. He's played about 40 games in 3 years. Essien would have been a better example, him being the best at what he does.

In light of this difficulty, I'd say that the best player in the world is one that is most unique and most difficult to replace.

Rooney is only just starting to do what Drogba has been doing for 3 of the last 4 years. He doesn't put the same amount of work in as he used to. He operates in between the posts now and doesn't go chasing full backs anymore.

Ronaldo is one of the most selfish players in the world and refuses to defend. Anything he can do, Messi can do.

Messi is on a different planet to anyone else. Can anyone else beat players with as much ease as he can? Ronaldo had one season of brilliant goalscoring, 2 years ago. But hasn't managed to replicate that. Messi has now had 2 seasons of unbelievable goalscoring form.

Anonymous Hero, he is already one of the best players I've ever seen, only Zidane is on par with him. Come the end of his career I predict he will be considered alongside Maradona and Pele, if they are lucky.

Oh and I was told I was a fool for putting Iniesta in a World XI ahead of Gerrard and Kaka 18 months ago. If he can add goals to his game he will be competing for the title of 2nd best player in the world (after Messi, obviously).

They paid £17m for Nani and Anderson, £14m for Zoran Tosic (wikipedia him).

Hercules to you no I've nothing to add, you told me on numerous occasions how right Southgate was getting things with Ali, Emnes and co, so I've a pretty good idea how much you know about the game.

To the opening poster I'd say it's pretty much between Rooney and Messi as to who is the best in the world right now but like I was trying to point out before you demonstrated your ignorance yet again, there are a lot of other good players needed in a team before the glory boys can shine.

Have a look back to how foolish your pro Southgate posts look now. You'd do well to just read the board for a while, pick up a bit about the game.

Rooney has been the best player this season but Drogba and Fabregas are both not far behind.

I'll say it again......LIONEL MESSI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The most important players to Utd are the likes of Fletcher, Park, and O'Shea. They are not the best players in the world but what they give Utd is 200% every time they play.

Hargreaves was far more important to them than some on here would believe.

Shame for England that he's suffered such bad injuries.

onthemap Posted on 23/03/2010 11:35
I'll say it again......LIONEL MESSI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and Rick is spot on with what he says, maybe Casillas is the best in the world? He's the best at what he does, or maybe Nesta or Cannavaro or Ramos?

None of them score many goals.

I'll say it again......LIONEL MESSI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rooney and Messi are workaholics but Maradonna wasn't and neither was Shearer.
Drogba and Fabregas have had excellent seasons.

My personal favorite is Essien and i'd put him up there with the very best.

He's the best midfielder in this country but not quite as good as the 2 Barca boys.

Hercules Posted on 23/03/2010 11:41
I'll say it again......LIONEL MESSI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

onthemap, I'm no more a Southgate boy than I am a Strachan boy.

We all know strikers need a platform to perform from. But there are more players who can provide the platform, than there are who can make the big differences like Ronaldo, Rooney, Messi, Kaka etc. That's why they are considered the best players. Your Hargreaves example was completely the wrong one to make. If you will make stupid statements, they'll be ripped apart.

If you don't want to listen to other peoples opinions just post your opinion and close the thread without bothering to read anybody elses. If you are interested in a conversation, conduct it without the arrogance you display.

Again, Aliadiere and Emnes (who I have not been particularly vehement in defence of. A case of you grouping all those who disagree with you on any particular issue as 'them' and 'them' disagree with you on everything.) are not part of this debate. If you'd like to talk about them and my opinions on them, start another thread. But be prepared to back up your claims with some evidence.

Also, I'm not trying to educate. My initial post was a bit of an angling exercise but since I've only offered true opinion and invited the same. You should try it.

The best has to be a player that can do things that nobody else can. A player who can win a game by himself. A player who gets fans on the edge of their seats. A player who takes your breath away with skills and daring. You can say that Nesta is the best centre half in the world, or Essien is the best holding midfielder in the world, but never the best player in the world. Well, not as long as Lionel Messi is sprinkling his magic on every thing he touches...

Hercules Posted on 23/03/2010 11:44

Rick, they are an important part of any team.

But Hargreaves has been injured. Fletcher does his job now. If Fletcher got injured, Park would do his job.

If Rooney got injured, who would score 30+ goals per season.

Yet throughout his time as manager you told the board how well he was actually doing, giving all manner of examples of young fast free flowing football, argued relentlessly, with me specifically, when I told you (IMO) he was clearly going nowhere.

The point therefore is valid, you're trying to educate once again having read some headlines and given your track record may well have got it wrong.

Rooney is the best as far as I'm concerned because he's doing it in a far superior league, but it's not possible to measure such a thing so is just an opinion.

Prove it. You have a unique way of seeing things. i.e. a person can only be 100% for something or 100% against something. When we played well I said so. When we were dreadful I said so. When we were unlucky I said so. But, again, do an FAO Hercules once you've used the search facility.

you're trying to educate once again having read some headlines and given your track record may well have got it wrong.

I'm not trying to educate anyone, like I said, just offering an opinion. Something you don't seem to like me doing.

I watch Spanish football and Revista De La Liga every week, as well as opting to watch Spanish teams in the Champions League quite often. So it's much more than reading a few headlines. Can you say the same?

I don't think there is much difference between the two leagues. It used to be that the top 4 in England were oustanding while Spain had 7 or 8 teams that were better than the other 16 in England. I think it's flipped completely. I think Barcelona are the best team in the world (and Real are on the same number of points) whilst the rest in Spain are less competitive and in England the top 4 aren't as good as they have been in the last 2 or 3 years but Villa, City, Spurs, Everton have improved.

Instead of ruining a perfectly good thread why not just start a separate thread asking whatever it is about me that you're so interested in, I'll answer everything (as I have on here btw).
