Algarve. I think he will succeed because he has at every club he's been manager at

Coventry - Kept them up on a limited budget until they finally went down. They haven't been back since
Southampton - Were on the verge of relegation until he stepped in. Got them to the FA Cup final and Europe
Celtic - Most successful Celtic team in years. 3/4 league titles and the last 16 of the Champions League twice

That's why I think he needs more time. He's starting to try and get his own playing staff in after being left with rubbish to work with. Once HIS team is on that pitch we will benefit from the results

Thanks for that Pauluka, however what he did in the past , and bearing in mind that very few of the fans at the clubs you mentioned have much good to say baout him, Plus his record in the short term here is dreadful, and this Celtic transfer saga is a farce. Beleive me i want a great Boro season as much as anyone, and will be happy to hold my hands up if he does succeed, however the odds look against it, and i think as the face of our club, his media and PR work has to change, as that will get embarrasing.

The Celtic saga isn't really a farce. We have signed 3 out of the 4 and the other opted for the Premiership.

Celtic fans didn't take to him because of the history he had with them. It was nothing to do with his success. Bit like George Graham when he went to Spurs

Let him build his own team before you judge. Southgate has left this club in the crap, not him

abcdefg Posted on 13/01/2010 15:25
Attn Lisbon

In all fairness with the Celtic transfers, from what I've gathered the Caldwell deal was a joint transfer with Robson I believe, so a new deal is being made for just Robson on his own.

I agree on the media and PR side of things though, he's not the greatest, but it's not that important in the grand scheme of things, most managers come across as idiots quite often, and it's not gonna make results any better.

Lisbonlegend Posted on 13/01/2010 15:26
Attn Lisbon

Ok, I shall tell you why I believe Strachan will succeed shall I.

Strachan was an excellent player considering his size (and appearance) and went on to have a great career which went on until he was 40 years old. That shows the ability, temperament and focus of the man as a player.

Strachans first job as manager was at Coventry where he helped the Sky Blues pull off perhaps the most unlikely relegation survival in Premier League history at the expense of Boro. The he kept them up for several years after that when they were an unfashionable club without much money.

Then he went to Southampton who were struggling and had been written off but he turned their fortunes around and they finished 11th in the Premier League. Then they finishhed 8th and reached the FA Cup final and qualified for Europe.

Then at Celtic he won the SPL title 3 seasons in a row aswell as a few other trophies including the manager of the year award.

I believed Middlesbrough as a club was in rapid decline when he took over and a few decent away results against bottom of the table sides could not hide our awful home record, poor attack and severe lack of entertainment. Plummeting crowds were testament to this and the reason Southgate was sacked.

The job Strachan has to do is not a 5 minute bit of surgery, the whole squad lacks quality and we now have only a handful of saleable assets. We are no longer a Premier league club and the squad needs an entire overhaul. Early indications for me are that Strachan will weed out those not good enough and this has been proved with the dropping of Jones and Yeates and the sale of Digard and Shawky. Results haven't been good but the change had to be made for the good of the club, we need a new approach as the previous 'strategy' went on far too long.

In my opinion Strachan has the brains and the mentality to do this but I feel we will need to stabilise prior to pushing on because we have been going downhill for so long. You call him arrogant, I call him interesting and guarded. Time will tell but you fail to undersatnd the severity of the situation before he took over, the results against the lower teams had simply papered over some gaping holes. Holes which would have reappeared as the season went on.

Firstly, having met Algarve briefly and reading his posts on here for the best part of 10 years I would say he's telling the truth about his business ventures.

Secondly Algarve I think your position on Strachan is very biased against, he doesn't seem to be able to do anything right at all by you which is strange because you were always quite well balanced in your views.

I appreciate we have had a shocking season so far but I believe the rot set in under Southgate, we got alot of points in the games we had Rob Huth playing and there after it was only the away form that kept us in touch (1 point off top, 6 points off bottom). Strachan doesn't play counter attacking football which is what won us alot of away points so he has to be given the benefit of the doubt for the minute until he's had chance to shape his own side.

Is he the answer? I don't know, time will tell. I've seen flashes of how he wants us to play long term though and I'd quite like a hard working, battling, high tempo and tough team even if it meant playing a lesser standard of football. He needs some players in fast.

Strachan was an excellent player considering his size (and appearance) and went on to have a great carrer which went on until he was 40 years old. That shows the temperament and focus of the man as a player.

Thats great so he will obviously be a great manager. aka Bobby Charlton, Bobby Moore, and a host of others, who were far better players than him

Strachan first job as manager was at Coventry where he helped the Sky Blues pull off perhaps the most unlikely relegation survival in Premier League history at the expense of Boro. The he kept them up for several years after that when they were an unfashionable club without much money.

as did Big Sam, Gary Megson, and any other manager who has been in the last 8 of the premier leauge for the past years.

Then he went to Southampton who were struggling and had been written off but he turned their fortunes around and they finished 11th in the Premier League. Then they finishhed 8th and reached the FA Cup final and qualified for Europe.

I beleive Robbo got us to 3 cup finals and saved us from relegation a few times also, but i wouldnt have him back either.

Then at Celtic he wone the SPL title 3 seasons in a row aswell as a few other trophies including the manager of the year award

You know and i know that any decent manager could have won the titles with Celtic,
As i said earlier history is important, reallity so much more so, therefore i will repeat.

I am a Southgate fan for no other reason than he was a player who always gave my team 100% and was the first Boro player in our history to lift a trophy. Therefore he is deserving of some respect. I fully accept that he should have been sacked, however it should have been at the end of the relegation season not at the time it happened.

Now the reality;
Strachan accepted the Job, fully undertanding the objectives, and the resources he had to fulfill them. For this he is paid a great deal,of money. Once you accept the job, the resposibilities, and objectives are yours. Forget this being Southgates team, the day he accepted the job and the salary it was his. Southgate has no further part to play, blaming Southgate does not take you any further forward.
After accepting the resposibilty, the job title and the money, improvements had been expected, instead what has happened is the team and the club have gone significantly backwards, The Celtic purchases look like an easy, risky option, however even that is becomming a farce, as per the point of this thread.

I firmly beleive that with dwindling attendances, no significant TV money, (and due to the severe hardships that are affecting the region), very limited merchandise sales, or other revenue making opportunities exist. The end result is abundantly clear, financial problems, and i for one beleive Gibson has done his bit and will not be willing to provide the major finance any further.

I am looking at the situtaion now, not what he might have done in the past, cos i beleive failure will be a very high price to pay...

Ok, now the actual reality of your reality...

I agree with your first paragraph but where does it say that promotion must be achieved by mid January? Where does it say that the improvement has to be immediate (and by that I mean results and not performances)? I do not blame Southgate but that is the reality of the situation that I have seen all season, that we are simply not good enough and big changes needed to be made on the management and playing side otherwise failure was destined to happen anyway.

We have just signed 3 of the 4 players mooted so why is that a farce? I agree that we are in dire financial straights and the only way to fix that is by trimming the squad and getting the best out of them. Strachan has been unable to do that until this month and managed to get shot of Digard and Shawky, the latter of which Southgate should have done a long time ago.

You are looking at the situation from the last 12 games but the season is 46 games long and you need to understand that.

You still insist on telling me what Southgate should have done, and i could tell you many other things he should have done, I keep telling you its irrelevant he is gone, blame him all you want, it changes nothing , but you keep clinging on to him, The last 12 games are a far better indicator than anything you are saying, we appointed a manager who had objectives, as in any other management role, are you saying what he has acheived so far indicates he is going to get it right ? cos quite frankly the odds are stacked against you

Why are you treating Strachan differently to anyone appointed to sort something out in one of your businesses?

Why do you want instant success?

He's had no time at all FFS. This is his first opportunity of bringing in his own staff, judge him after that.

Would you sack a Senior Manager after just a few months without giving him the opportunity of making changes?

Would you give him the same shyte workforce that you know are not good enough to get you the results you want and expect a miraculous turnaround?

Lisbonlegend Posted on 13/01/2010 16:24

Clingin on to him? I am simply frustrated with Southgate, the whole situation and the position we are in, it is dire and should never have been allowed to get this far. That is why I mention it, cos it pis_ses me off, cos I have to pay money to watch shy_te and freeze my knackers off when we don't have any strikers available.

Of course I am not saying that the results so far have indicated he will get it right but results are not the only indicator of change. Having seen the majority of the games under Strachan I believe we have performed reasonably well at times but lack any cutting edge at all and the game is all about goals.

This is also not a normal business world, in football you have small windows for large change (new players) which you don't get in other businesses and in the meantime all you can do is manage small change(psychological, training, formations) to try and find a formula for success.

Judging a manager during a period were, in effect he has had his hands tied, is downright folly in my opinion. Could you have expected Alex Ferguson to turn this bunch of misfits into a top team in 12 games without signing a single player? I think the answer is no and that is the reason I back Strachan. If at the end of February there is little or no change then the criticism will be warranted but until then I think it is downright harsh.

Algarve your coming across as all bitter & twisted just because Lisbon posts a lot on this board (as do all of the others who you have been insulting all the way through this thread.)
Now you could be fishing and if so well done they have all bitten .
If not then youre coming across as someone suffering from diarrhoea of the mouth and constipation of the ideas!

zzzz FFS, you accept a job, based on your abilities to be able to fulfill reasonable objectives. Now if the chairmans objectives were to allow you to have the worst managerial record of anyone ever doing the job in your first twelve games, then i agree with you.... however i doubt that was ever the case. Give him time by all means, but in that time show us you can win football matches---- Now you can reply its all Southgates fault, and i will point you in the direction of my earlier post , that will save us all time

Whiney B if it means that by questioning the abilities of a highly paid individual to manage our club, and if it means by questioning Lisbon about his posts, i am bitter and twisted, then i accept it, This fušking clique on here knows no bounds, better they just have the board to themselves and RG---

Now remember i told you Southgate was irrelavant, are you satisfied with the results we have had under Strachan, and whgat is your confidence level that he will get us at least to the play offs, cos we all know that was the minimum objective ? Now think carefully, as you know its going to come back to haunt you !!!

Am I satisfied with results? No, is the honest answer. I hoped for that boost when a new manager comes in but understand why I didn't happen.

As I answered on a previous thread, I will make no prediction until the transfer window closes at the end of the month because then we will have the squad together which we have to work with and I can predict where I believe he should get with the squad at his disposal. If you wish me to make a prediction now based on what we have available at the moment then I think we will finish between 16th and 6th depending on whether we keep our better players fit.

So your confidence level has somewhat reduced then, and i would refer the honourable board member to some of his last threads and arguments, which are totally different to your last statemnet Still Its allways good to know that a wise old head can educate an attention seeking whippersnapper, and with that i bid you goodnight, as i laugh my cošk off climbing the stairs , shaking my head, "he will make no prediction " how the mighty have fallen in one simple thread !!! Only kidding mate its been fun, im not bitter just extremely concerned

The reason my opinions appear polarised is because they are in direct contrast to the polarised hatred of some of the horrible bitter posters on here who constantly moan and whinge about absolutely anything from Strachan to Transfers to merchandise. I get sick of reading it all, call it the Ying and Yang effect. I do have faith in Strachan but he needs to sign some good strikers in this window and a failure to do so will write off our promotion prospects. My oulook is positive but realistic, I feel. If you sleep better feeling you have educated me then that is ok by me.[^]
