Some girl at college said she was 24 and wouldnt consider leaving home. She had a boyfi, has her washing done, gets everything for nothing and her dad gives her 50 pocket money!!!

Yeah there is something seriously wrong with people that live at home with their parents after they are 21.

Also people that stay in the same town for their whole lives also weirdos.

"dont have a choice"? More like too idle to get off their backsides and get a life. The parents must need a good shake as well.

"Also people that stay in the same town for their whole lives also weirdos."

That is nonsense I'm afraid. Some people simply feel no need to move away from a place they consider their home.

I have been fortunate enough to visit some incredible places across the world for 6 months at a time in some places. I wouldn't say that people who don't do the same are wierdos

I still live with my parents. After splitting with my ex I was basically made homeless, I can't get on the council housing list as an 'in need' case because I earn too much money. If my parents were to kick me out I would end up in a B&B still not being considered as being in need and yet I cannot rent a place because I don't pass credit checks and I don't earn enough to pay for even basic accomodation in Exeter. I'm in a catch 22.

well im 23 have a decent full time job and still live it at home, why wouldnt i?

I get to go out every fri and sat and any other time i choose, it allows me to drive a brand new car, go to 90% of boro away games, have a few holidays each year and ive got as much freedom as i want.

or i could live in my own house and pay a massive mortgage, be able to go out every now and again, and barely have a social life.

hmmmmmmm let me see which seems like the best option?

Oh yeah I forgot that if I move out while I'm at Uni still life will have totally started. Why would I move out and spend all my wages on running my house when I can spend all my money on going out like you should be at 21. It wouldn't make sense to get a house then stay in it 24/7.

Obviously I will move out when I leave Uni and get a full time job. It's not 1974 anymore where you go straight from school to full time employment.

Absolute crap, when I was a student living off 4,000 a year including having a boro season ticket and travelling up to home games from Sheffield, I could still afford a cheap place to rent!!

I dont know how you could live with your parents do you not want your own freedom!! I mean what about if you want a XXXXXX in the living room in peace!! [:D]

Simple answer to this is... not everyone is the same !
I live with parents in Stockton and I'm 29.

But then I've lived in Barnsley, Darlington, Lancaster, Manchester, London and Los Angeles.
In January I'm off to Thailand, Australia, New Zealand and America for 6 months. Back in the UK in time for Glastonbury. Happy days [smi]

I guess some people just dont have any ambition or desire to have their own lives. My kids will be getting kicked out when they are 18, they can work and get their own places, the lazy sods.

Mr 23 year old, I work to pay my own bills, I support myself at college,I write for three local papers in the east midlands. I have a programme on hospital radio. I watch the Boro, have over 500 books, albums and cd,s. Also member of my local residents association ....etc.

If you didnt live with mummy and daddy you wouldnt have to ask that question. All you have is dependence on other people because you are too frightened or too bone idle to get up and be a grown adult.

People younger than you have already been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, fighting illegal wars.....and you whinge about being pampered. Poor you.

if you get on with your parents, stay at home as long as possible imo, it's loads cheaper

"I guess some people just dont have any ambition or desire to have their own lives."

I think that is incredibly narrow minded and offensive. If people choose to live with their parents then that is their choice, if they choose to live on their own, their choice too. I can think of far worse crimes than living with your parents beyond the age of 21.

Stop being so cocksure and preoccupied with other peoples lifestyles.

Living at home doesn't give you all the freedoms you think ou have, afterall it is their home and not a hotel so don't treat it like one.

While my parents are very welcoming of my OH I am still aware that if he stays over (which he is tonight, even though I am at work) it is my parents house and there is a line that isn't crossed.

If I go out I still let them know where I am going because I know they will worry.

Until I am in a place of my own I will always be aware of the fact that I live in their home and that I am just paying bed and board

Mr Lee - I watch footi, rugby and other stuff at the pub. When you are either at college or work 6 days a week and spend 3 hours everyday travelling on public transport, theres naff all of the day left1

Most days Im up by 6am and dont usually get back till after 6 at night. If you can dance the foxtrot, shop, breath, do college work, plan your day around doing three things at once, you really are as naieve as you sound. I pity you, but im off to bed to read my Willie Madren Autobiography in a minute. Then tomorrow im working a late shift, so il be out of here at 11am and back about 10.30pm.Before that il fold up the washing and check its dry, make sure the pots are washed, dried and put away, make my pack - up, open the mail, check and pay the bills, including the rent and council tax.

Saturday I travel across on bus and train to peterbro, watch the match, then on my way back see my friend who has just been diagnosed with cancer. I then catch the train home about 10pm,and put my feet up. Sunday morning Im due at work (to b confirmed) at 07.30pm untill 9.15 pm. As there is no transport at that time i will bike 12 miles and back. I will get home about 10.30pm.

Monday I start college at 9.am, so thats up at 7am and out of here by ten to eight.......now.............what are you doing over the weekend?

Is that ok?

why would it be embarassing, if i wanna bring a lass back i do, it has no affect on them and as for sitting in ma room a dont need to, as i have money it means we can go out, and when we do choose to sit in, how is my room any wors than sitting in a living room?

Lee - you must be an only child. There are 4 kids in our family and if they were all bringing cucmbers, ky and fish and chips round on a night thered be chaos. Its a matter of pride. Being a mammys boy was not something my two brothers and me would put up with. My sister nursed my mam untill sis got married.

Us three lads were all gone at the latest by 18.

We all needed space. Its not decent. Its like living in a goldfish bowl.

Now I think people may be fishing.

However, I don't understand how some poster think there is only one correct opinion on the matter and that is all. Each to their own.

I live with my mates at the moment but only left home last year.

You argue that living at home means you have to take you lass over the ironing board infront of your parents, but then those who live at home could argue living on your own leaves you with no money to go out and pull. Neither is correct.

Do folk still live with their parents over 21.Cant believe..

Firstly sorry to hear about your friend.

As for the rest i work a 5day week and have completed my college curses and therfore do not need to go any more, however i cannot ance the foxtot.

Travelling on public trasport for 3 hours a day, my advice would be buy a car or drive yours if you have one.

I have an early finish on fridays 2pm, so i will be home showered and sorted, then off out by 4 at the latest, i will crawl home at some ridiculous time. i will then get up and catch a train to peterbrough, watch us play XXXXXX, get train home and go down town, i will get up sunday and go out and watch the footballb,

what there to complain about in there?

I left home at 19, never went back, why would you want to? I get on great with my parents, they're my mates, I wouldn't dream of taking the piis.

My bro in law is 29, still at home, and doesn't look like intending to move out either. He's a cracking lad though I must say.

I still find that a bit wierd though, no wonder he's never had a long term girlfriend, what lass would put up with that?

I can see how hard it is now to afford a place to what it was when I was younger, but that's still no excuse really, you need to stand on your own two feet.

I blame his mother, far to fcking soft.

My parents would have me move back in, but I would see it as unrespecful to sponge off them like that and to be honest would never dream of it. Also pretty selfish really as they need a life of their own too.

Teens and early 20's should basically be spent enjoying yourself and getting trashed and at that age, unless you're wadded, you're better off living with your parents as long as they let you live your life.

What's the point of spending all you money on rent /mortgage/bills etc and not being able to go out?

lee1986 Posted on 26/11/2009 22:29

because if you spent all your money on bills you would be able to say i can stand on my own two feet but am boring as XXXX.

I must agree that the age of leaving home has probably risen, everyone seems to go to Uni now, so I can see how hard that would be to have your own place in that situation.

But after you have your degree, you're in the same boat as every other working person, so absolutley no excuse to be at home after 25;

It's just completely selfish, if I buy a flat I can't get that new BMW or go out every single weekend, go on that holiday, etc etc etc......Grow up!

Let your parents live the rest of their lives how they want to, they've done a great job looking after you, now it's time to give them a bit of breathing space, think about others for a change.

It baffles me.

I think its a joke how some people on here think if you're over 21 you should live on your own. Some people cant afford it like myself, and quite frankly, its none of anyone's business!!

I still live with the 'rents and im 20. Work 5 days a week mon-fri.

Got the rest of my life to save, might as well save for holidays with the lads and drive around in a nice motor and have money to take the 'wife' out.

I'll be at the match on sat then off into town afterwards.

What a schit social life i have living with my parents!!!

I'm not having a go at you, you say your 23, I'm saying 25 and over is a bit strange, I can see how difficult it can be now for younger people.

To be honest, for me, if you are 25+ and earning the average wage in the area where you live in this country, then living with your parents is just taking the piiss and for 'tight' reasons only.

BoroGrecian Posted on 26/11/2009 22:53
Do folk still live with their parents over 21.Cant believe..

Dibzzz: it's easy for you to say to move out and that you shouldn't live with your parents after 25. I wish I did have my own place but I can't afford it, simple as. I may be able to afford the rent (which for a one bed flat in Exeter is an average of 575 per month) but I wouldn't be able to afford the council tax, heating, water, electricity, television license etc etc.

You could say that I should move in with the OH. At the moment I won't do that because the experiance of my last relationship has left me hesitating on that issue for fear of ending up back where I am now once again and never having moved on. the OH has asked me twice to move in with him, both times I have turned him down because I'm not ready and I'm pretty sure he isn't ready really(he's still dealing with his ex wife)

It's very easy for you to say 'You shouldn't' but if you don't know the reasons why then you have no place to comment.

Adults live at home with their parents for many reasons, not just because they can't be arsed to move out.

degsyspesh Posted on 26/11/2009 22:54
Do folk still live with their parents over 21.Cant believe..

Seriously, early 20's - just enjoy your life. Fair enough if you've got plenty of money or your parents want you out then go for it - but otherwise there's nowt wrong with staying at home.

People moaning on here probably left home at 20, couldn't afford to go out for except once a year at Christmas and the first time they did they couldn't handle their beer anymore, got far too pi55ed and ended up going home with the roughest munter you've ever seen.

Six months late they were married to the munter, 2 years after that they were divorced and she took half of the house leaving behind a sad bitter individual who can't bear to see anyone else not making the same mistake.

ye i am 23 and i may move out before 25, maybe even after. Dont no what is the average wage to be honest but am doin ok i would of thought.

Maybe it is selfish living my lifestyle but my parents wouldnt begrudge me it, just like i wouldnt begrudge my kids it (if i have any). like i said earlier i have house but choose to rent it out rather than live in it.

Do folk still live with their parents over 21.Cant believe..

Just to add, I left home at 19, travelled the world working, always worked hard and stood on my own two feet, got married in my mid 30's and now have 2 great kids.

I wouldn't change a single thing, I've had a great life, did all that I've wanted to and had a superb social life in my 20's, and I mean a superb social life! And I still do, all my mates are the same.

I'd encourage my kids to do the same, but at the same time let them live with us if they needed to, and if the time came when I thought they were taking the XXXXXX a bit, I'd encourage them to stand up for themselves, I'll be doing them a favour in the long run.

nothing wrong with living with your parents if you are still in your early twenties, by your mid twenties you should have def got out yes. But people in their late teens early twenties may have very good reasons for being at home and is nothing wrong with it whatsoever.

I've moved out and in and out and back into my parents a number of times. I'm 27 and I'm currently "In" although I'm looking to move back out again over Christmas.

If you have a good relationship with your parents I don't really see the problem. And the money saved has also allowed me to go and see a few places I also wouldn't have seen.

If you take the Uni route it's inevitable you'll end up living at home for longer. You end up in debt and get paid XXXXXX all till you're 21-22 at the earliest...

My brother in law still lives at home, and he's 36. He works nights, and it suits both him and his parents.
My brother at 46 lives at home too, but for different reasons.
My daughters have both left home before they turned 18, because it suited all concerned.
Each to their own and all that.
It is definitely harder, in some respects, for the kids who are in the 16 to 26 bracket, to fly the cuckkoo.

Interesting to see where I fit in here, I live in a house at uni during term time (which my dad pays the rent for) and at home during most of the holidays, so everything in my life is paid for by my Dad basically!
I come home a lot, but that is because my fiance lives close to my parents. When I graduate in the summer, we will be getting married and moving in together and both going on to do post graduate studies, and in all honesty will probably still get financial help from both sets of parents.
I don't think I could have afforded uni without help, especially as my parents earn too much money for me to get anything other than the lowest possible maintenance loans etc.
I suppose I do live a nice lifestyle for a 21 year old, with a car, a season ticket, a course I enjoy studying and a job 2 evenings a week as a nanny for spending money. I know people at uni who have it far worse than me money wise.
I am very lucky [smi] but then when I am at home my parents have to do very little housework/shopping as I try to do it all for them, as a very small gesture of my gratitude!

Life experience comes from being on your own two feet. No wonder that the slightest "crisis" - a traffic jam, power cut, PC crash, car-wont-start, queue in ASDA,having only a few pennies in the bank, causes "upset". Some people dont know how to cope and wouldnt know how to manage outside their bubble and blanket of cotton wool.

I dont regret leaving home at 15 and wouldnt change anything about my life. Struggling and having hard times gives you a tuffness and resillience to face other things.

My washing is dry and put away. The next load of washing is in.Next Im dividing up last nights stew and freezing some, whilst brewing another cup of "T". Then its make pack-up time and check college emails.

No one gets in the way or psses me off. If I want to fart all morning and play Rule Britannia till it comes out my ears, I dont have to consider anyone but my neighbours.

Its great being independent[^][:D]

Like most things, I dont see how the same scenario could possibly suit everyone.

I was at home until I was 21 and then returned for a a few weeks when I was 29 and my marriage had broken down. It was a bit strange, as it seemed we slipped back into an adult/child relationship. I think thats the key to the whole thing, moving your relationship with your parents to an adult/adult one. Some people find that easier than others. Whilst financial independence helps, some people never seem to make that step to an adult/adult relationship.

Its the same with your own kids, my son is 19 and lives with his girlfriend, they party too much for me and he finds it better to have his own place. Thats fine, he knows that if it all goes tits up though, there's a place for him with me and always will be. My daughter is 17 and still lives with me, although as I'm away monday to friday, she gets a sort of independence during the week. The best kind actually, one where she get the freedom and I pay the bills. I suspect she will be at home for a fair bit longer and thats alright too.

The interesting thing will be what happens when one of my parents dies. I suspect the surviving one will eventually live with me and the whole thing goes full circle. Thats also fine. Hopefully I wont have to tell him or her off for staying out too late at the bingo or playing their Mantovani records too loudly.

I still live with my parents at 26 but then I've only had a full time job for 3 years and only in the last few months have I developed the confidence to feel I could stand on my own two feet. I have to get out of debt to do anything about it first though and that'll be about a year then another 2 - 3 years to save for a deposit, I'll be 30 by the time I move out.

I left home when I went to Uni at 18. And have lived in Newcastle for the last 7 years. Bought a house this year but ended up living closer to both our family homes as we did not want to raise a family in Newcastle.

Moved out 2 years ago (28 I was) as I felt it was the right time.
With the bills and such you do lose your freedom. I've had one holiday in 2 years and dont go out as much as I did but it also has its advantages.
Don't listen to the idiots who say 'move out as soon as you hit 21!' enjoy your freedom financially - go on that holiday, buy that car, live life as you want to you're only young once.

Surely it's about the money available to people and how they propose to spend it.

If they are happy at home after 21 let them get on with it.
They will probably leave the nest when they meet someone and want to settle down with them.

Just off to work so I can carry on saving money for a deposit in 3 years. BTW I rent at the mo - my wages are hardly brilliant, but its how people get on with things. One less night out and leaving the car on the pavement is a good way to start saving. Give up the holidays and walk instead of driving.

Red_S,

I'd be hard to love a Geordie, especially if the liitle 'un wants to support the skunks, as it's mates probably would. It's part of the contract to support Boro, as do/did both of my sons, my Father, my Grandfather and my Great Grandfather.

Then, horror of horrors, what if it's a Ginger? Then the poor little bugger would have nothing going for it, at all. It'd be a definite candidate for Dr Barnardos, me thinks.[smi]
