Williams - get him under a very long contract

A very good display again tonight.

With all the Southgate last chance saloon and Johnson off in January stuff don't lose sight of Williams emergence this season or Joe Bennet for that matter who also looks the part.

Whatever people think of the management, these young players deserve the full support of the fans and good long contracts to avoid them slipping away on the cheap.

Steve Bruce was there tonight, I hope he was only watching Johnson.

I thought he was average at best, fair play he gets the odd tackle in, but offers nothing going forward and just seems to hoof it anywhere? id like to see him at right back, where he belongs,,,,

Getye - sorry to disagree but he rarely wastes a ball, as well as getting his tackles in and being good in the air.

You must be watching the wrong player son, buy a programme next time you go so you can follow who's in what number shirt.

Williams had a great game and gives us something different in the middle of the park.

He's got far too much talent to play at fullback.

I'm sorry but I just don't see it with Williams, I must be missing something cos alot of people rave on about him, but I think Digard and O'Neil in the middle with Yeates on the right is the way to go if we are looking to attack.

Williams got his game cos he scored pre-season, and he has failed to replicate this. Yeates needs a good run in the side as he is capable of chipping in with 7-10 goals a season.

I dont think Yeates is good enough, certainly not for a starting place.

Very well said Holgate Corner. Two or three major first team breakthroughs a season from the Academy seems to be the norm in the last 6 or 7 years. Something thats been overlooked amidst all the wailing and gnashing of teeth.

I agree, ive been very dissapointed with him so far.

I think Williams is a good player but sometimes looks like a defender playing in midfield, which he is.

I don't think he contributes enough creatively for a team with aspirations of promotion at home.

Don't think he has been given a chance yet. On Saturday he was one of our better players, and he has a great attitude. If we could give him 10 games on the right (not the left!) and get him scoring a goal or two I think he could be a real asset, especially if Johnson's goals dry up over the course of the season.

The goals need to come from somewhere, and I don't think that Ali, Emnes, Williams, Folan will be anywhere near 10 by the end of the season.

I dont think he's in the team to be a creative force, he's there to protect the back 4, break up the play and keep our play going.

At what he is in the team to do, he does very very well.

yet another square pegs slaven disciple

is it on williams birth certificate that hes a defender like mate?

Williams was a very creative force in pre-season and top scorer. I'm sure he will be again (a creative force) when confidence returns to the side. As it surely will.

Happy to hear Williams is progressing. I think he can make a good midfielder and has talent. I feel like Boro won't get to see the best of Adam Johnson, though. He's a gifted footballer and will probably move to a club with a higher profile and more money next summer. Steve Bruce was there this evening, apparently. Hopefully he is watching Aliadiere.

I think you can tell very quickly whether or not a youth academy product has got what it takes or not and I've seen all of them come through the ranks at Boro since the early 1970's.

Williams has the potential to be as big as any of them we have seen in the last 40 odd years, he plays like an established player and he's only played in the team for a couple of months.

You mark my words, he's got what it takes.

Agree with that, but I'm not sure we need a destroyer as much as a creator in home matches when we have difficulty breaking down defences. I'm not making a criticism of Williams so much as a criticism of tactics.

I'd prefer a Digard/O'Neil partnership

williams allowed digard to playfurther forward tonight and there was less pressure on the CBs - I thought williams was our best player tonight . . although there were a lot of good performances, particularly GO'N in the second half
