Thanks for standing up to the USSR and for helping us end the threat of Communism in Europe.

The most devicesive, vindictive and I would argue evil regime in post war politics. Where large swaithes of the nation were just written off ( including our very own), entire communities destroyed through vindictive policies that reaked more damage on British industry than the Luftwaffe ever did. 'The UK was still seen as a decent political and military power back then'

Well, hang on a minute Sir!! We were able to take on the Argies without America even being mentioned under Thatcher. AND we also had a well equipped army, not overstreached in wars we should be anywhere near, but one which we were able to call up and defend British soil.

Now then son, jump ahead twenty five years, and not only do we see see President Bush humiliating Blair like he's some younger brother, but we secretly allow American planes to use BRITISH Crown territory to transport detainees to be tortured, in spite of laws against this!!! Hmmmmm. Fancy some of my farm medicine now? [;)]

Keelo - I'd rather vote Conservative and know I was getting a real Tory government, than vote Labour just 'coz I'm working class and they're us' - only to realise you've actually voted in Tory-lite.

Lets be honest here. Thatcher wouldn't have won 3 elections in a row without the vote of the working class, so she can't of all been that bad. And besides, New Labour must be the 'Socialist' Party the Tories dream about!!

The fact that the military no-mark Argies had the audacity to take on this 'great world power' and were able to capture the Falklands probably says something about what was happening to national defences at that time i.e. they were being rationalised like everything else (apart from the police maybe).

GTR, the lowest bit was before the war when it was ever-so-subtly implied to the Argentinian government that Britain was unwilling and unable to defend the islands.

We had just won a war against an oppressive military regime. Seems viable to me. Starting a war to win an election is not credible. It would have been cheaper to knock 10p off the price of petrol and there would be less deaths.

Oppressive military regime my arse. Argentina was on its backside and Galtieri was desperate for popularity as well. It's not a conspiracy theory. There are plenty of historical facts out there that point to it being a war of convenience, the key one being that her government were incredibly unpopular before the war. I think Blair's reasons for invading Iraq were different, but no less deceitful and underhand.

I don't know why Maggie fans are so outraged at the idea anyway. Surely they would admire such ruthless ambition, which is the hallmark of her premiership, is it not? As for letting a few working-class lives get in the way...well her track record on that speaks for itself with the way she decimated thousands of lives in the Industrial Heartlands of the North and went after the miners because of what they'd done to Heath.

So what if we indicated to the Argies we didn't have the capability to defend it? Mind games that the Argies gambled upon, and lost.

sign of a true leader to make unpopular decisions and policies that were in fact for the benefit of the nation at large

not her fault there are many either too dumb to see it or too blinded by gutter politics form the opposition to appreciate it, are you really that easily fooled?

i'm neither tory or labour, maybe some of you should consider being the same instead of blind loyalty to out moded ideals and rallying around flags that no longer represent you.

we sank french warships in ww2, killing 100's of french sailors in order to stop them coming back to bite us in the arse later, it's war - there are no rules!

tell me exactly the direct thatcherite policies that affected teesside during her reign?

british steel and corus would have went under years ago if thatcher never got a grip when she did

NONE on here could have done the job she did, took the decisions she took and did it with such dignity

would you really have tony blair and gordon brown over MT? then you really are the most juvenile, naive fools.

hats off to maggie, cut form same cloth as all the greatest leaders of this country

Regardless of your views and opinions about her and her mob the FACT remains it took a totally avoidable conflict and 255 of our brave lad’s lives to raise her popularity to a level where a general election was winnable.

And if you want to know what one of our top soldiers down south view of her and her cronies was read ‘No Picnic - 3 Commando Brigade in the Falklands’ by Julian Thompson the brigadier who commanded 3 Commando Brigade during the conflict.

I can only assume that there are a few wind up merchants on here coupled with some who are too young or too stupid to remember or experienced firsthand what a Tory government was really like and the damage they did to this country and our area in particularly.

Lest we forget, goodnight and god bless...

And what exactly have the Labour government done for Teesside?

And conveniently you don't mention the fact we are now in a unwinnable conflict in a nation 7,000 miles away, where British soldiers are dying weekly because a Labour, yes Labour, prime minister lied to the nation in order to appease his inbred yankee puppet master.

I can't see how you can openly berate Britain's finest ever leader without contemplating those points.

I think the main point of this debate is that someone came on here to wish a former PM happy birthday, perhaps knowing it would cause a bit of a rift...Yet what then happened is that there were a string of insults, and I would guess that the majority of people making them can only think of 80's unemployment, miners strikes and the poll tax.

They are completely forgetting the achievements of Mrs Thatcher and the bigger picture of her reign in power, and are instead acting like sheep follwing each other and seeing who can lead with the best derisory remark!

All this towards a PM who was so great, that even now, nearly 20 years after she left office, her presence is still there in the current political sphere.

What about unjust poll tax?

Sorry that your family suffered job losses under Thatcher. Bit like what a lot of people are going through now under Mr Brown's Labour lot. Except this time, I've heard political commentators point out that the job losses now, especially in the skilled trade, are irreplacable, and are lost forever.

Perhaps in a few years time when Mr Blair and Brown are getting on a bit, there will be people on here vilifying Labour's leaders for their political mistakes, economic mis-management, dodgy foreign policies, and military disasters...all of which has contributed to screwing up this country big time.

mfc_1 Posted on 14/10/2009 11:38

What she did for the dockers benefited the majority of them.

It was an industry where the select few got the pick of the jobs day in day out whilst the majority of the dockers picked up the scraps.

My family went through the dockers strike and we came out the other end thousands of pounds better off there after.

Good on the old girl - she knew what was right and what was wrong. If it was wrong you were f*****d!

This thread lacks balance, this is my honest opinion, I'm in my 40s and working class, from a labour family and have voted both Conservative and Labour.

1. The unions were ruining the country,no doubt, I could see this as a 16 year old.

2. The unions power did need reducing, Thatcher sorted that. However she did it in a provocative and confontational manner, not good.

3. She used the Police in such a negative way during the miners strike that they will never recover, regarding the publics respect. The Police are now seen to serve the Government of the day, not the people, something very different.

4. Unempoyment; Jobs and communities were wiped out. Thatcher did this knowing we would have generations of unemployed. An under-class has since emerged, to remain for good. This is her biggest and most shameful legacy.

5. The Falklands War; This helped her massively, a war I believe any resonable government could have prevented.

6. Labour and the unions have to take responsibility for letting the county slide, so such drastic measures had to be taken.

7. Thatcher was a great leader and politician, but did she care for the people of Briain.... NO, definitley, NOT.

Finally, Its not so much what Thatcher did, it was the way that she did it, thats why people, like me, who have voted for her, detest her.......she was a heartless human being !

The_263 Posted on 14/10/2009 12:09

The point is, you should be in full control of your life (including a career path) and learn to become independent, not relying on politicians to provide you with a weekly pay-packet. All politicians will feed you anything you want to hear. You use the system to acheieve your goals (legally or even illegally if that's the way you are). To finger point all blame on politicians is stupid and naive.

In saying that I agree that any government should be prepared to protect it's own industry (especially in cases like Teesside where a few industries dominates employment figures)to a degree: the Germans did it with BASF. Even if an industry is in uncontrollable gradual decline the local politics of that affected area should be adjusted to change the attitude of the schools, parents, people etc etc. Instead we have utter pocket liners like Bell t0ssing it off in France whilst his constituency transforms into a ghetto. An abrupt change needs to be avoided - politicians in this respect have failed.

I can't HONESTLY see Argentina agreeing to (even UN) demands to leave without SOME kind of bargain in it for them...such as sharing or agreeing to take over xxx years later.

Why did Tony Blair fly to Australia in 1997 to meet with Rupert Murdoch and broker a deal him?

Answer - That deal got the Sun newspaper to back a labour govenment at the next election.
Because he had to, without the sun readers on board there was a chance Labour would not have won that election.

But his third point, illustrating where she used the police as a weapon against the public has caused more long-term damage to this country that a lot of her policies. Respect for the police and authority was fundamentally undermined and this, together with her fostering of the "I'm alright, Jack" attitude, has forged the general lack of respect to anyone or for anything shown by a fair few people in the country today.

you're missing the point guisboro. the housing market up heavel was started all those years ago by selling off the social housing, and making epole believe that they should own their house, when for god knows how long they were happy renting - and paying rent that they could afford.
cue buying their house and unscrupulous loan/mortgage people saying they had equity. not blaming thathcer or brown for that though lol.

'Because of what your Labour lot have done, they're dying out there. AND BOTH of these wars are unwinnable, oh, and just whats the aim of them again, please??'

I'm not one of the 'Labour lot' but I do know that the same would have happened if the Tories had been in power. The involvement in the Middle East is a continuation of the forlock tugging well established by Thatcher during her 'special relationship' with Ronald Ray Gun. Had she been PM we would have had more troops out there, that's the only difference.

You're wasted on this board, Mystic Meg! In all seriousness though, yes, Regan and Maggie were mates, but the special relationship was less one sided than it is now, and what you've said will never be known. (Notice however, that NO-ONE ONCE called Maggie Regans poodle - ho hum, Blair!)

You're in cloud cuckoo land. It was no different. She was given lots of stick about being Reagan's lackey. Not in the press you were reading, obviously.

I often wonder why more was not said about the Yanks invading Grenada since it is part of the Commonwealth, or why American Bombers were allowed to fly from British soil in the 80's. Anyone care to expand why the Tories where poodles to the Regan during this period...

Could someone please explain to me how a labour government would have maintained the industries Maggie is blamed for dismantling.

During those times and all the period since?

I am genuinely interested as I just cant see how it would have been viable in the changing world markets.

They did criticise it though! What do you want them to do? Invade the USA?

"or why American Bombers were allowed to fly from British soil in the 80's."

Nowadays they just stop for re-fuelling whilst illegally kidnapping and transporting suspects, with the agreement of Labour[rle]

The Iron Lady ... some of her policies did help the country, but her dogged determination to put the working class squarely in their place has caused social problems which we are still suffering.

I'm convinced she destroyed a whole generation of people, wiped them out, and ruined their lives completely. That generation and their children sank into an abysmal place, out from which crawled a whole new generation. The tribe we now call the Chav ... I totally blame Thatcher for the awful degeneration the working class was forced to endure. She is responsible for a lot of what we see today !

Guisborough_Town_Red Posted on 14/10/2009 15:53

Thatcher opposed the Grenada operation and told Regan she did...unfortunately, taking on the Yanks was a task even too big for her!!!

As for American bombers, they've been flying from almost every soil in the world since the end of WW2 - mind you, nowadays the Labour lot like to include flights from our soil where people can be sent for torture. lol.

Keep it up!

At least most of the other tory boys on here are open and, dare I even say it, actually proud of being a Tory boy. At least they stand up and be counted instead of trying to sit there in some superior, parent like stance that they are in the referees corner and somehow know better.

GTR - "Are we REALLY worse off now than in the 70's"

erm no - and that's entirely the point

12 years of XXXXXX-poor labour leadership have done far more for the country as a whole than the tories ever managesd under thatcher - mainly 'cos she/they couldn't give a toss about the majority of british subjects

i admire thatchers single-minded destruction of everything she opposed in the same way as i admire uncle joe and the khmer rouge for clamping down on the intelligentsia

to hold the sale of council-housing up as one of thatcher's achievements just highlights your lack of research into the topics you're basing your political opinion on

the only good thing she tried to do was the poll tax - much fairer system thatn we presently have. aside from that she started the ball rolling with this country going right down the sh1tter.

Parrot - I'm sorry mate but the superior 'look at me, I'm so sensible' tone of your posts just gets on my f*****g nerves.

Very little of what thatcher did was good for the nation, it was mainly good for London which is why we have such a lop-sided economy to this day.

whistler - ever heard of the phrase lions led by donkeys?

our industries have suffered from poor management and direction for many years, partly, in my view, because of this anglo saxon economic model which looks at short term rewards and value for shareholders rather than the long term health of a company.

Ding! Ding! Seconds out, round two...

Scrote.
My point was, like it or not, Thatcher ended Labours 70's 'winter of discontent' and took decisive (though unpopular at the time) action, that ultimately made Britain PLC a pretty decent economic power-house! Even so, "XXXXXX-poor Labour leadership" (your words) heve recently tried to un-do it.

Parrot.
Agreed. Mrs T was very VERY good at sticking up for the UK, and now Labour has sold us out to Europe. They have handed back some of the rebate Maggie famously won for us, and will be surrendering yet more powers without ONCE asking for us to have a say on the issue, even though they promised they would do!!! That my friend, is dreadful and downright deceitful leadership in my opinion.

HolgateCorner.
Though I'll vote blue, I'm unsure if I want a Tory in Guisborough!! I don't even know the candidates name, and apart from the ridiculous expenses he's claimed (haven't they all though??!) Ashok Kumar hasn't actually been THAT bad really! He certainly seems to be involved with local issues. Does Mr Bell even know where Boro is???

Changingman.
"Suprised myself with the amount of Tory shyte on here" Perhaps because some of us actually noticed (and benefitted from) the good she did for us, not just hop along the fmttm bandwagon of oh, she was nasty to the unions and to industries etc etc... Lets be honest here, they were going downhill WHOEVER would have been in power! I do agree however with the Sun comments - picking the likely winning side to keep readers number up I bet!
