boksic Posted on 07/10/2009 10:55

OK Raz, in no more than a hundred words, go for it:

"Gordon Strachan would be an improvement on the manager we currently have because..."

whoyadoin4 Posted on 07/10/2009 10:57
Southgate is no longer Middlesbrough manager

Best Gordon Strachan quote:

Reporter: So, Gordon, in what areas do you think Middlesbrough were better than you today?
Strachan: What areas? Mainly that big green one out there....

The_Lizards_Jumpers Posted on 07/10/2009 10:58
Southgate is no longer Middlesbrough manager

Gordon Strachan would be an improvement on the manager we currently have because he's ginger so it will give the fans a chance to reuse their McClaren gags and he gives amusing post match interviews which means that fans cant complain about his media skills like with McClaren and Southgate.

Do I win a prize?

MightyDuck Posted on 07/10/2009 11:00

speckyget Posted on 07/10/2009 11:01

In what sense is Strachan unproven in England Razmo? Or put another way, in what sense are Coventry and Southampton not in England?

he did f-all with coventry... and nearly got southampton relegated on a few occassions.

mind was it him that got them to an fa cup final.

The_Lizards_Jumpers Posted on 07/10/2009 11:05
Southgate is no longer Middlesbrough manager

"he did f-all with coventry"

Wasn't he manager when they earned only enough points to get them relegated, but for the FA deducting points from another team who failed to turn up against Blackburn?

Not a great claim to fame....

speckyget Posted on 07/10/2009 11:05

So that means 'proven' then.

zoec Posted on 07/10/2009 11:06

So he's not unproven, then.

Edit: too quick for me, specky.

Raoul_Duke Posted on 07/10/2009 11:06
Southgate is no longer Middlesbrough manager

"Or put another way, in what sense are Coventry and Southampton not in England?"

Didn't he relegate both of these clubs from the premier league, or was it just Coventry.

Pretty much did what Southgate has done with an established, medium sized Prem club. Can't see why people would be that fussed about him, although it is popular to have a jock manager.

I hope it isn't true, however much of a bungler Southgate has been.

Brick_Tamland Posted on 07/10/2009 11:08
Southgate is no longer Middlesbrough manager

He also saved Southampton when they looked dead certs for relegation and managed an 8th-place finish with them as well.

Razmond_HWDR Posted on 07/10/2009 11:10
Southgate is no longer Middlesbrough manager

i'd class bruce and hughes as proven in this country, as they have been doing it for a while.

strachan didnt do much in brief spells at both clubs.

i'd still class him as unproven.

His aim with both clubs was merely to keep them up, and that aim doesnt give him enough scope to prove his quality as a manager

The_Lizards_Jumpers Posted on 07/10/2009 11:12
Southgate is no longer Middlesbrough manager

"brief spells"

He was at Coventry (as a player manager and manager) for nigh on 5 years and at Southampton for over 3 years.

Big_Shot Posted on 07/10/2009 11:12

speckyget Posted on 07/10/2009 11:14

'His aim with both clubs was merely to keep them up, and that aim doesnt give him enough scope to prove his quality as a manager'

Then most managers in the league are similarly constrained.

JigSaw Posted on 07/10/2009 11:15
Southgate is no longer Middlesbrough manager

Bruce more proven than Strachan? You joking?

Strachan has finished higher than Bruce ever has in the Premier League. They've both been relegated once. Factor in that Strachan has won 3 league titles aswell and I'd say he is far more proven than fkin Bruce, who has flopped at all but one club he's been at.

Razmond_HWDR Posted on 07/10/2009 11:17
Southgate is no longer Middlesbrough manager

'won 3 league titles '

when did he do this in England?

Razmond_HWDR Posted on 07/10/2009 11:20
Southgate is no longer Middlesbrough manager

'Then most managers in the league are similarly constrained. '

yeah i am sure when Harry the Redknapp sat down with his board in the summer i am sure the agreed aim was to merely stay up.

The_Lizards_Jumpers Posted on 07/10/2009 11:21
Southgate is no longer Middlesbrough manager

Because of course Harry Redknapp is representative of most of the managers in the league.

speckyget Posted on 07/10/2009 11:22
Southgate is no longer Middlesbrough manager

McLeish? Megson? Brown? Coyle? McCarthy? Martinez? Etc.

Razmond_HWDR Posted on 07/10/2009 11:23
Southgate is no longer Middlesbrough manager

The_Lizards_Jumpers no harry redknapp is an example of a manager who's aim when he came to the club was to merely keep them in the league.

His aim now has clearly changed and move on, like any club would hope, progression.

I agree that teams like Southampton and Coventry tried to merely stay up each season and it worked for a while

do you think McLeish and Coyle are proven in the english league?

Buddy Posted on 07/10/2009 11:33

Hmmmmph. Several possibilities here:

1. hoops' source within the club is trying to suss out which of his mates has leaked stuff onto the Internet;

2. hoops' source within the club doesn't exist and the St Ledger thing was a lucky guess;

3. hoops' source is genuine and fed him the St Ledger info, but this is just made-up nonsense and nothing to do with the source;

4. Southgate is no longer Middlesbrough manager and Gordon Strachan will be soon.

If it's 1, it would be a strange false titbit to leak as everybody's been talking about it for days. Much sooner leak something like a non-existent training ground bust-up or something that nobody else has mentioned.

If it's 2 then it was a hell of a guess backed up with a remarkable amount of calm confidence.

If it's 3 I'm not sure you would spoil your reputation by talking shyte - because then next time nobody will believe your source.

Erm....which leaves option 4......[sad]

But he has never beat Strachan's best ever finish. Strachan was at Southampton longer than Bruce was at Wigan. Didn't he build a side there?

They were near the Champs League positions when he left and had got into Europe. Something Bruce hasn't done.

You could say he learnt from Coventry, could you not?

Razmond_HWDR Posted on 07/10/2009 11:52

@ Buddy

It could be option 1 but as you say, it's gossip that's already done the round for a week or thereabouts so it's not a fantastic way of rooting me out. It's definitely not option 2 or 3.

I'm not 100% sure the deal to bring Strachan in is done yet but I do know that he is Gibson's first and only choice as a replacement. So I guess this means that Southgate's dismissal hasn't been made official yet. But since Strachan is out of work, I expect it'll all be signed, sealed and made public during the international break.

Apparently this has been mooted behind the scenes for a week or two now.

AyresomeJoy Posted on 07/10/2009 14:07

Complete fiction of course but it makes me laugh how many clowns on here defend Southgate as though he was the top class manager we were promised in the first place.

The reality is that you could put 100 out of work managers names in a hat, pick any of them out at random and they would be better than Southgate, Strachan included.

Yes, get behind the team. Yes, booing is unconstructive. But ffs wake up and smell the coffee and realise that Southgate is the worst manager this club has had in living memory and the sooner he goes the better off we will be.

Best post ever. Watch for Hoops' racing tips!

Although we're jumping the gun a little on Strachan, I don't believe anyone's that lucky so whoever you know is obviously in the know.

Keep posting son, this time next year we'll be millionaires!

@ crazydiamond

I wouldn't count on it. As borolad says, I'm not sure how much more inside info I'll be party to.

There's a lot of anti Strachan feeling displayed on the thread by a number of individuals or were they just defending the status quo at the time?

Are the critics, and lets face it it was heavy critisism, going to backtrack? Will they change their tack? Is it "support the wee "ging" for them now?
