Today will have done us the world of good

Too much hype surrounding this team.

Johnson was suddenly being touted as the best thing since sliced bread, Alliadiere had become Thierry Henry overnight, the Sheffield press hadn't seen a team like it since the 1966 World Cup.

Boro fans on here, most of whom don't go near a live game, were treating West Brom like they were lambs to the slaughter.

Load of rubbish the lot of it, West Brom got ahead today with a couple of lucky goals and then controlled the match.

Nothing like a good hiding to shrink a few inflated heads.

Lets hope Gareth Southgate shows a little more respect to the better teams in this league.

If we want to be up at the top at the end of the season he'd better learn fast.

Jon 77 - the team is nowhere near as good as all the recent publicity.

I haven't had the benefit of watching them away and as far as I am concerned I haven't actually seen them play well yet.

Even if it just calms the ridiculous speculation surrounding our 23 year old out of contract 'youngster' Adam Johnson who you would think has just appeared as a brilliant 17 year old out of the youth team, a lot of good will have been done today.

This team needs to work itself into the ground to get results to stay near the top, they were half a yard behind West Brom for a lot of todays match. It will be a good wake up call.

As the match wore on I wondered if one of the reasons we were putting in such a lacklustre performance was because the players were believing hype. Second to every ball, we looked the same as last season, lacking the desire of teams such as Stoke et al who stayed up despite 'weaker' squads.

Our fullbacks have played pinball for weeks but today came up a midfield who knew what to do with random balls landing amongst them.

What worried me the most at the final whistle was that if our players start to expect easy games in this league, if we get promoted (still think we will) we could see a lot of real hammerings like this as today's team will probably be the team next year.

jeff potato - I agree with you and I think the only answer is to find out who the players are who believe their own hype ( I have Johnson down as one of them) and warn them that if they don't keep the work rate up they will be out of the team and out of the club.

There is no substitute for good honest graft in matches and I think recent years have shown we simply can't afford to carry prima donnas.

'Boro fans on here, most of whom don't go near a live game, were treating West Brom like they were lambs to the slaughter'

I don't go anywhere near a live game. Never will while Southgate's in charge. However I didn't think we'd beat them, I was hoping we could contain them and get a point.

Hey ho, even with the Clown in charge we should be good for a play off place. W Brom and the XXXXXXing Mags are too good for this division. Us, The Blades, Preston, Bristol C will fk around with the play off places

I love this theory of how good newcastle are.

What a load of shiit, they have won 1 game more than us and lost to blackpool ffs.

I wasn't necessarily talking about you Johnson, you obviously have a great knowledge of the championship from your armchair view of the league table.

I don't think Newcastle were too good at Blackpool last week, or are they allowed one off bad results?

Johnson Posted on 19/09/2009 23:48

Annoyingly The Mags do have a good squad, even after their departures. I think overall they're better than West Brom, but time will tell.

They have better players than us though [|)]

I know! [DFS]

But newcastle are better than us to the tune of 3 points.

Are you psychic or something?

Johnson Posted on 19/09/2009 23:56
Today will have done us the world of good

Well, yes I am, but that's not that point.

I can also count good players

SplendidStuff Posted on 19/09/2009 23:59
Today will have done us the world of good

you need to count points on the board, not good players.

Thats what matters and currently there are only 3 separating us.

Today will have done us the world of good

I think it could be the kick up the arse the team need but the only way it'll do us the world of good if it finally shows Steve Gibson that GS, nice guy that he seems to be, is 1)unable to motivate the team & 2)tactically inept.

Sheff Wed were 3 nil down at half time against Sheff Utd on friday night and they came out with some spirit and fight in the 2nd half. How many of us at half time knew with utter dread that we'd come out spineless and toothless in the 2nd half today? Where was the change in tactics to get us back in the match (reverting to 4-3-3 perhaps, afterall we were losing 3 Nil)? I know we're not going to get rid of Southgate but we need someone in to fire up the team and dish out the bollockings.

Like elsewhere in the posts, today left me with Cardiff like feelings. The optimism completely destroyed, not by a fantastic WBA team but by a disgraceful Boro performance that brings back too many memories of last season.

Got to agree that this result will bring some players back down to earth but I can't see us nicking too many points off the top teams in the division so we really need to take max points off the lower teams if we want to make promotion.

On a positive note, there are enough negatives above, there were at least 5 mighty fine looking lovely lasses sat within a 10-15 seat radius so at least I was given some distraction from the goings on on the pitch! (Middle East Stand Upper - if you're wondering)

Yeah, but they have three more?! I like the way you argue fella! [^]

Ah, fk it. It's a bit of a crap league so let's look at it again at Xmas (still think the Baggies and Mags will be top two then)

Today will have done us the world of good

If we were underachieving on a regular basis in this league i would be upset, but we currently are on target to achieve what is ultimately important.

Considering the lack of belief in Southgate/Gibson/The players i dont see why people have reason to complain as they do. Surely they are so terrible we must be over achieving all those factors considered.

We were terrible today of course, but its one game and we can put it behind us and move on.

This game has blown everything out of perspective, something that sadly is fast fading with football fans today.
