All this re-release XXXXXX is doing my head in.

I like most of their stuff, not mad on it, but I do like it.

I have a couple of CDs, Abbey Road and Sergeant Pepper's and a few of their tracks on my PC. Some of it's good stuff, I'm sure no one would deny that.

They'll never ever go away so just put up with it I suppose.

One of the other most popular British bands ever are Oasis, which for me, are very similar.

fair enough.

I've been through a 200 post argument about this before, Raz, so I'll just leave it that I don't like the early Beatles' music, I don't like the middle Beatles' music, I don't like the later Beatles' music and I don't like anything they've done as solo artists.

Apart from the Frog Chorus, obviously.

Razmond just cos a band is massive doesn't mean that everyone has to like at least some of their stuff. That's the beauty of personal taste.

People get too precious about music generally. I am a huge Beatles fan but if someone doesn't like them then that is up to them. It's art, it's subjective. I have had loads of discussions on here as a result of my liking Oasis. I accept that they are not for everyone but can't understand the intolerance of me liking them and the snobbery that follows.

In terms of the Beatles music, it would be ridiculous to expect every person on the planet to like them. Surely that is the beauty of music, art and the like - it is entirely in the eye (or ear) of the beholder.

What isn't subjective about the Beatles is their importance in musical history, their musical, social and cultural significance and the influence they still have today. I think that is really undeniable.

It's a bit like the classical composers. I couldn't listen to it and don't like it but I recognise their genius and influence. I do think that the Beatles music will stand the test of time and one day Lennon/McCartney will be looked upon like Mozart, Bach etc are looked upon today.

While I can appreciate their brilliant song writing talents, they just have never done it for me.

On the other hand Elvis blew me away when I was growing up - when I got past his 40 greatest album I realised that this was just the tip of the iceberg in terms of his musical talent.

Have idolised the king ever since and never tire of his endless recordings - more and more superb unreleased stuff coming out on a regular basis now.

The difference between popular music and every art form that has gone before it, is that so many people see it as a competition rather than something to just be enjoyed. As if ones choice of band somehow imparts superiority over lesser beings.

As a young child growing up in the 1970s, I wasn't aware of the Beatles until one day when I was about 6 or 7, I heard my elder brother playing some of their records. I still remember my very words to him: "Wow, these are good! Who are they?" I was instantly hooked. As I hadn't heard of them, my opinion was totally objective and without prejudice. At that age, I wasn't aware of how big they had been 10 years earlier.

As stated on this thread, it's all about tastes and opinions. Not everybody has to like them. Some on here will like music that I can't stand and will probably think "How can anyone not like this?" When it comes to things like music, there's no right or wrong answer. I'd like to think however, that most people can appreciate what the Beatles did, even if they have different tastes in music.

over rated and over hyped in my opinion.

Their music is covered by a wide selection of artists and orchestras. I've been hooked on their music since I first saw them perform From Me to You back in the 60's on Thank Your Lucky Stars and I have almost everything they have ever recorded on vinyl and CD.

Maybe the problem with some people of my generation, (which was the one AFTER The Beatles) and the generations therafter is, as kids, we're practically brought up on them, so its easy to take them for granted. In my case, by the time Punk happened I was all too happy to reject them and all their peers. If we're still interested in music as we get more discerning we like to discover it for ourselves and not have it forced on us like The Beatles, because of their incredible popularity always were and probably always will be.

I remember early 80's getting into The Monkees after watching their TV series for the first time when it was shown every friday on Beeb2 at 6oclock. Their songs werent played to death on our radio or tv growing up and so were a revelation to me. I'd be sniffy about the Beatles but loved their manafactured American imitators coz I hadnt heard them to death and i'd come across them in my own good time.

I know now that for the Monkees to imitate The Beatles it took the cream of America's Tin Pan Alley like Boyce and Hart, Neil Diamond, Carol King etc writing the songs. I think that says all you need to know about the Beatles really. It's fair enough if you dont care for them but you know nowt if you dont recognise at least 3 of them as being among the best in their craft.

Timboi Posted on 09/09/2009 06:03
Any one else dislike the Beatles?

Well it's about context, innit?

At the time nothing like the Beatles had existed; there were bands, of course, but none of them quite had the effect that the Beatles did. to this day, people still debate as to the reason. Marketing? Cheeky Scouse Backchat? Who knows?

People have their own taste in music (although mine is better than most, I'd claim - and not just with music) and obviously not everyone is going to like them.

If they appeared on the scene today (pointless point really as the whole musical landscape could well be totally different - but I'm going to make it anyway) they probably would not have been lauded in the way they were.

In the context of what they did when they did it, there's probably no-one who has had the same effect on music.

You can say you like them, dislike them or are indifferent about them completely but don't dismiss them as irrelevant or overrated - they were rated just fine for what they did, when they did it. You can say the same for bands like Zeppelin, The Stones and so on.....

The beatles were a new concept at the time.
I suppose they were britains first "boy band" in a way.
i was about 8 or 9 when they split up , so dont remember them that much.
i've always prefered the stones , thinking that the beatles were too "squeaky clean" , but having watched some of the stuff on BBC2 this week , i've changed my opinion of em partly.
Dont suppose i'd go out n buy any of their stuff , but there's no denying that they were quite inspirational in their day.

THey weren't squeeky clean by all accounts!

The fact is and will remain that without the Beatles music as we now know it simply wouldn't exist. They changed everything and removed boundaries.

As someone said above, you don't have to like them but to dismiss them as irrelevant and unimportant is just wrong. I also disagree with another poster above - they are as relevant today as they always have been.

Razmond_HWDR Posted on 09/09/2009 07:41
Any one else dislike the Beatles?

i am amazed that someone could fundamentally say they do not like the beatles full stop. I grew up with the beatles already around me. Without even taking an interest in them i knew all about Yellow Submarine, and remember thinking when i was at primary school that it was an amazing nursery rhyme.

Then songs like love me do, all you need is love, twist and shout etc where just there in every day life, songs you just knew without knowing the band.

Then as i got more into music and helped by the release of the anthology trilogy i got more and more into the band and realised the true depth of the beatles and that they are much more than a pop band.

Songs like Hey Bull Dog, Rain, I Am The Walrus, Dear Prudence, Helter Skelter, Blue Jay Way are all stand out songs that are just as fantastic today as they were all those years ago.

Songs like You've Got To Hide Your Love Away, about Brian Epstein, were ground breaking simply because of the meaning behind the song.

The introduction of the Sitar to popular music with Norwegian Wood might seem a simple addition today, but it was ground breaking then.

Raz, you're coming across as a bit of an arse. Not only is what your saying not really accurate, it is also quite insulting.

I think it is musical fact that the Beatles were innovative, they changed musical and popular culture and deserve all of the accolades that they get. They were groundbreaking, important and will live forever.

However, I think it is a bit nuts to think that just because of that everyone ought to like them or at least one of their tracks. You just have to accept that we can't all like the same thing.

thatís the point they did a variety of different music, some one mentioned earlier who the chemical brothers are still trying to emulate the beatles, and with the psychedelic reel they got close. and Kurt Cobain said he always wanted Nirvana to be a blend of the beatles and the pixies.

because you dont like the accent...

So Razmond if I like the music of, say, The Krankies and you said you didn't, do you think if I kept pressing the positive attributes of their music, I could persuade you to admit you like some of their stuff too? I don't think so.

Some people do not like anything that the Beatles have produced, me included. It doesn't mean I'm right or wrong. It doesn't mean you're right or wrong. Its a personal opinion and nothing anyone says can change that.

Accept it and move on mate [^]

No they weren't, not in the way you mean.

Nope.

if you dont know the different types of music they have produced, then thats says it all really.

it worries me that you cant get past the accent to listen to the music itself.

just like shakespeare, a lot of people cant get past the language, but if the did I am sure they would love at least one of his plays.

So you don't know, then. You can't come up with any examples of the different types of music they've produced.

Raz, it is undeniable that they covered a huge range of musical genres but that still doesn't mean that everyone must like at least one of their songs.

Adi i am just surprised that people would not like even one song, as i have mentioned.

"make me wonder what some one like zoe likes, as i bet their influenced by the band in some way."

No doubt, Raz, as I like lots of things. But not the artist I'm listening to most at the moment. I picked up a great, digitally remastered Billie Holiday complilation the other week, which I'm currently boring everyone in the house with. [smi]

XXXXXX she wasnt influenced by the beatles.

mind she did have such a tragic life, she is upsetting to listen to sometimes..

.. on a lighter note Good Morning Good Morning by the beatles is fantastic, some great drumming on the album version, and just as good version toned down on the anthology version.

That post sums up your problem Raz. I am not on anyone's 'side' in this war you are waging and I am telling it exactly as it is.

Some people love the Beatles, some people hate them and everyone else sits somewhere in between. I cannot for the life of me see why you are surprised by that, why it causes you such a problem and why you can't just accept it.

It's not about sides or right and wrong, it's about musical taste and one man's meat is another man's poison. It really is that simple.

If there were doubts over their influence musically, socially and culturally or their importance then I probably would put an argument forward because a lot of that is objectively measurable. However, it is perfectly reasonable that someone might not like any of their music whilst recognising that they were a pretty important band. Not the only one, but certainly in the top one [;)]

You mean it, presumably (and I don't know it was an educated guess) in the way that boy bands are seen today eg Westlife, Boyzone etc. That is not what the Beatles were.

"beatles wouldnt have been around if it wasn't for elvis

said so themselves"

Is that supposed to make me think The Beatles were less groundbreaking?

Everyone has influences going back to the dawn of time, no one just plucked some music out of thin air and made pop music. The Beatles took what went before and like all groundbreaking bands made it into something different, their own.

It doesn't mean you have to like them of course.

junkyard_angel Posted on 09/09/2009 13:53
Any one else dislike the Beatles?

Raz, my point is that if something haz been done before then it is no longer groundbreaking in a musical sense.
Just because the Beatles were the firet in Pop to use sitar does not make it groundbreaking.

The Beatles were not the only band to contribute toward changing music because they in turn were very influenced lyrically by Dylan. It is just as valid to say that Sgt Pepper would not have happened without Dylan, but nobody bangs on about it all the time.

Razmond_HWDR Posted on 09/09/2009 14:03
Any one else dislike the Beatles?

but what they produced for the masses for popular music had never been produced before. Yes a sitar had been played before, but never in that why to accompany a POP music track.

the pepper album wouldnt have happened if drugs hadnt come into it and if the band were still producing albums to tour.

the reason why the beatles were so diverse was because they were influenced by so many different people.

Just listen to the drumming on Good Morning Good Morning, thats inspiring, and nothing to do with dylan at all. The beatles tended to write songs less political and more about themselves and their lives.

the influence from dylan was drug related, he introduced them to a certain drug... and along came I Am The Walrus :o)

junkyard_angel Posted on 09/09/2009 14:09
Any one else dislike the Beatles?

Dylams influence on the Beatles was NOT just drug related. Dylan was writing non-political surreal songs in the early 60's when the Beatles were still writing two minute pop songs. This was before he introduced them to anything.

Adi_Dem Posted on 09/09/2009 14:12
Any one else dislike the Beatles?

You're wrong about a lot of things there Raz. The reason the Beatles were so diverse was because they were so hellbent on finding new sounds, new instruments, new recording techniques. What they did was take their influences, which were heavily folk/cross Atlantic US R&B and expand them. They broke down barriers and developed to the extent that their influences eventually became, in many ways, irrelevant.

Dylan didn't introduce them to LSD, they hardly knew Bob Dylan. Equally, he had very little to do with their later work. I Am the Walrus was a song written on LSD, which was actually given to them for the first time by Doctor Robert.

Finally, they rarely recorded high. A lot of their innovation came in the studio and for the most part they were straight when they were in there.

Razmond_HWDR Posted on 09/09/2009 14:12
Any one else dislike the Beatles?

but his introducing them to a certain drug is what helped fuel the imagination that went into the pepper album.

i thought that was just a well known fact?

Adi_Dem Posted on 09/09/2009 14:14
Any one else dislike the Beatles?

Dylan actually introduced them to weed in around 1966.

Razmond_HWDR Posted on 09/09/2009 14:15

On August 28, 1964, Bob Dylan and the Beatles met for the first time at the Delmonico Hotel in New York City.
http://oldies.about.com/od/thebeatlessongs/a/shesawoman.htm

It was there that Dylan introduced the band to marijuana cigarettes. This is well chronicled here:

junkyard_angel Posted on 09/09/2009 14:15
Any one else dislike the Beatles?

Dylan introduced them to weed (proper Mexican sinsi) and as Adi says, that had nothing to do with Walrus.

Space_Face Posted on 09/09/2009 14:16

Bob Dylan can't sing.

Adi_Dem Posted on 09/09/2009 14:17
Any one else dislike the Beatles?

Yes Raz and Walrus was released in 1967. LSD was the drug of choice by then. Dylan had nothing to do with it.

Razmond_HWDR Posted on 09/09/2009 14:18
Any one else dislike the Beatles?

my point was that bob dylan introduced them to a certain drug which helped with their imagination.

before that they used another certain drug merely to help their performance on stage.

so what if dylan influenced them? isnt that a good thing?

Adi_Dem Posted on 09/09/2009 14:19
Any one else dislike the Beatles?

You made specific points that were wrong and so I corrected them, that's all. I have no problem at all that Dylan was an influence on the BEatles. Why on earth would I?

Razmond_HWDR Posted on 09/09/2009 14:20
Any one else dislike the Beatles?

junkyard_angel Posted on 09/09/2009 14:21
Any one else dislike the Beatles?

It is a good thing, but I can accept that some people don't like Dylan.

Adi_Dem Posted on 09/09/2009 14:22
Any one else dislike the Beatles?

I'm saying that that album was completely original. It came about because of the Beatles' genius and the heavy influence of drugs. It goes so far beyond whatever musical influences thay had that I think the likes of Dylan became irrelevant to them.

Razmond_HWDR Posted on 09/09/2009 14:23
Any one else dislike the Beatles?

but you are talking about the lyrical content of dylans songs and not the complete music.

i think a lot of his songs concentrate too much on the lyrics and the music becomes a side issue.

p.s. didnt dylan try to be diverse in his music and his fan base went ape about it?

Razmond_HWDR Posted on 09/09/2009 14:26
Any one else dislike the Beatles?

Adi i agree.

i cant argue with you about that when i am arguing with someone else who is saying different to you.

i'd just confuse myself.

junkyard_angel Posted on 09/09/2009 14:36
Any one else dislike the Beatles?

I don't think The Beatles would say that Bob was irrelevent to them. He was always (and still is) lyrically superiour to them.

His influence was purely lyrical and nothing to do with studio technoques etc, but he opened them up to the possibility of different kinds of songs.

Razmond_HWDR Posted on 09/09/2009 14:37
Any one else dislike the Beatles?

but as Adi has pointed out some while back the beatles were much more than just about the lyrics.

they did things dylan wouldnt dare try.

junkyard_angel Posted on 09/09/2009 14:43
Any one else dislike the Beatles?

For goodness sake raz, a acnowleged s much myself.
Dylan liked the Beatles and they liked him. To say he didn't DARE try those things is plain daft.

Any one else dislike the Beatles?

"p.s. didnt dylan try to be diverse in his music and his fan base went ape about it?"

Dylan "returned" to electric music (he had been there before, in his college days) and he and the band faced booing and slow-hand-clapping everywhere they played. But he stuck to his convictions at the risk of alienating his fan base and ploughed on regardless.

That takes nerve.

Razmond_HWDR Posted on 09/09/2009 14:55

junkyard_angel my point is that as soon as dylan tried to be different his fanbase hated it, they like the fact he did the same stuff and he was political without trying to be.

junkyard_angel Posted on 09/09/2009 15:05
Any one else dislike the Beatles?

You are wrong raz, The old folkies hated it, everyone else loved it. Dylan as been changing throughout his career. He rewrites the lyrics and messes with the arrangements of his greatest songs all the time. Even to this day.

Dylan has never stood still. Highway 61 (1965) was the heaviest album ever released, in its time.

Razmond_HWDR Posted on 09/09/2009 15:08
Any one else dislike the Beatles?

before my time just remember singing a documentary about when he changed his muisc and came to gig over here and he got booed by all age ranges.

maybe i'm wrong, but i doubt that.

junkyard_angel Posted on 09/09/2009 15:18
Any one else dislike the Beatles?

FFS raz, I have just described how he got booed, not just here, but everywhere. My point is, he did nothing to appease those fans. His attitude was "If you don't like my new direction then tough, cos this is all you're getting"

He refused to compromise and in the end he was proved right because his career soared and he won more fans than he lost.

How many artists would have done that?

Adi_Dem Posted on 09/09/2009 15:56
Any one else dislike the Beatles?

I am struggling to understand where this argument has actually gone. THe original premise of the thread was to ask the question as to whether anyone else dislikes the Beatles, which they obviously do.

THat turned into some kind of argument from Raz that those people can't have listened to all of the Beatles songs (which is just a bizarre thing to argue) and then it turned into who influenced whom, who introduced drugs to whom and on it goes.

There is room enough for Dylan, the Beatles and any other artist for that matter.

Did Dylan influence popular music? Is he a great songwriter? Were his lyrics great? Yes, for me all of that is true. That does not reduce my view of the Beatles.

One factual point I would make is that the Beatles lost a lot of their original fans when they began changing their sound. So Raz is correct in that respect, they had the courage and conviction to do what they wanted to do.

Razmond_HWDR Posted on 09/09/2009 15:58
Any one else dislike the Beatles?

basically i am right. end of thread.
