If the club is ran so well...

how are we in so much debt?

there are plenty of clubs who get much lower attendances than us and seem to be flush

captain5 Posted on 28/08/2009 11:20
If the club is ran so well...

Because we spent big in getting into Europe and getting to the UEFA Cup final, while having only lukewarm support from our own fans.

It's not difficult to understand.

"how are we in so much debt?"

I can think of about 22m wasted on strikers to start with.

MightyDuck Posted on 28/08/2009 11:25
If the club is ran so well...

we didnt really spend that big when we were in europe now did we.

Schwarzer (1.5m), Parnaby (free), Riggott (1m), Southgate(6m), Queudrue (2m?)Morrison (free) Rochemback (free?), Boateng (4m), Downing (Free), Viduka (3m) Hasselbaink (Free).

Hardly a fortune

MightyDuck Posted on 28/08/2009 11:26
If the club is ran so well...

that was the team that started in the final by the way [^]

Paying big wages trying to make the step-up, that didn't materialise. The likes of Hasselbaink, Viduka, Parlour and Mendieta would have been on massive wages between them.

Say 200K per week.

If the club is ran so well...

Schwarzer was signed in 1997 by Robson. I'm almost certain Rocky wasn't a free. Yak and Maccaone cost 15m between them. Viduka cost 4.5m and would have been on top wages. JFH would also have been on big wages.

Big wages - simple [sad]

If the club is ran so well...

I understand big wages will have skint us but surely we wernt spending 1million a week. Lets say the low earning premiership teams pull in 50 mill a year cant understand how our debt got so large?

And giving Mendieta a 5 year contract [|)]

redlion Posted on 28/08/2009 11:38
If the club is ran so well...

I don't think it just spending big getting into Europe,I think it's an accumulation of debt over the last 15 years.

Think how much money the club has losttrying to attract players to this neck of the woods by putting them on big contracts and getting rid of at a loss,Boksic,Gascoinge,Ravenelli,Maccarone come to mind.

I'm afraid we're back to Year Zero and having to start again, the sooner people realise this the better.

If the club is ran so well...

I remember we paid 3m for Brian Deane who was about 30 at the time.

Enough said

If the club is ran so well...

Maccarone & Yak didnt start in the final, both were on the bench.

i agree that the wages are the reason we are in this trouble, but how fans did the club think they were going to get? the ground is only 34k. that would be 13m a year from league games (based on 25 / head) still 39m short of the 1m a week wage bill. Even with 8 more home cup games thats only another 7m. Who they hell did the maths?

ProudToComeFromTeesside Posted on 28/08/2009 11:40
If the club is ran so well...

Boateng cost 5m, maybe even 6m.

MightyDuck Posted on 28/08/2009 11:41
If the club is ran so well...

redlion, its such a shame though isnt it. a bit more savvy 4 years ago and we would have been fine

Wages.

Boro's annual wage bill was huge for a few years under McClaren and at the start under Southgate; with the likes of JFH, Viduka, Yakubu, Zenden, Mendieta, Reiziger, Southgate, Ugo, Rochemback, Parlour, Juninho and Boateng.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was 50M per year at its peak.

Redlion has it spot on. For years we lived a little beyond our means, subidised by Bulkhaul's profits. When Gibbo's investment finally manifested itself into Carling Cup success, European qualification and the UEFA cup final, we actually made a loss. With the current economic climate, I reckon Gibson decided that for now, it wasn't worth it to pump the money into the club, especially as with the new breed of foreign owners, we were fighting a losing battle trying to keep up with them.

Mighty duck, they might not have started in the final, but my point is they cost us a lot of money in terms of transfer fees and wages.
