Do people hold the same stereotypical views that a lot of people hold that I come across when out walking the dog? Mainly that he is going to attack them or their dog at any second. Pure ignorance, gets right on my tits.[V]

What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

I'm going to digress slightly, but its a bit relevant.

I was thinking the other day how easy it is for people whose sexual predilection is for animals to get a bit of a quick thrill. If you are out walking your dog, how often does a complete stranger come up to you and pat your dogs arse? They will usually even have the nerve to chat to you whilst they are doing it.

Imagine if some bloke did that to your missus whilst you were out and about. He'd probably not last two minutes.

So my advice is whack them with the dog lead and send them on their way before they groom your dog in a way you might not like.

Ive had 7 Staffy's over the years and put it this way .... Id rather leave my kids in a room with a 100 Staffy's than 100 people.

Naturally a Staffy is the most placid natured , people loving dog (especially kids ) that there is...in my opinion. Like any dog though if its mistreat or has a bad owner they are very powerful and capable of causing harm.

I have an English Bull now and hes even dafter and softer than a Staffy. So far hes been savaged by a Yorkshire Terrier, a Border Collie, 3 cats and a Jack Russell. He always just submits and whines like a baby as they attack him. Best way and long may it continue !

As for the breed mentioned here, i love the "Oh he`s so soft" routine. Yeah, until a toddler pokes him in the eye and it goes for the kids throat. Anyone who has a dog like that when they have a kid is a schithead.

japsterboro Posted on 12/08/2009 12:53
What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

I have to say that I make judgement as soon as I see someone walking a staffy ... Chav or thug.

I'm a dog lover, but I honestly wouldnt been seen dead walking any type of bull terrier because of the perceived image. Call it shallow, but I want people to interact with my dog and not feel as if its going to tear their kids faces off.

Me and my Mrs were walking across the Knavesmire a week or two ago with her border collie puppy ... we saw this large gent with his staffie and thought, 'here we go' ... covered in head to toe with ink, short and overweight (him, not his mutt). The two dogs made a beeline for each other ... they ran around until the overweight dog nearly collapsed. She was friendly enough and I had a but of a play, the owner seems like a nice lad ... then the dob decides to have a little chomp on my arm ... harmless enough ... but then he grabbed hold of the Mrs's arm with some venom. Little bugger left some right teeth marks in there ... no blood but looked close to puncturing her skin. I have to say, we actually sat there XXXXXXing ourselves laughing because its what we expected, but she was actually in a bit of shock.

Now if that'd happened to a 3 year old face, the concequences could have been far more serious.

It's not shallow at all. That's exactly the point of most pedigree dog breeds - to project an image of the dog, and its owner.

What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

I have friends who have staffs and most of the staffs I've meet are very friendly and playful dogs.

However I recently became a dog owner and i decided against a staff, purely down to the fact that by owning a staff I felt I would be seen as a 'chav type' and didn't want other staff owners talking to me or boasting about their dog.

A growing concern is that teenage boys seem to be given these dogs as presents and if they cant manage to dress themselves on a morning (they always seem to have a trouser leg tucked into a sock)how can they be expected to responsibly look after a powerful dog?[?]

SmogOnTheRhine Posted on 12/08/2009 13:08
What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

To be fair, the problem is not the dog, the problem is on the other end of the lead - unfortunately the majority of owners are the typical stereotype, and I mean the majority. Therefore the public are entirely justified in thinking the worst of the dog - it has probably got an irresponsible owner thus it can't be trusted.

BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering, Teesside Uni for me.

Personally I don't care what the lot of you think my dog is my pet, I take out for a walk before and after work and occasionally down to south gare for a swim.

Rod100 Posted on 12/08/2009 13:30
What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

like any dog really. fine if owned by a decent person.

What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

I personally know of 3 Staffs on my estate and everyone of them will attack another dog if it gets the chance, thats the reason the American pitbull "Terrier" is bred from a Staffodshire BullTerrier and an English Bullterrier...its in their nature to fight due to the Terrier in them, most staffies are loving dogs but they should be muzzeled whenever they are outside of the owners property.

SHOW STOPPER:

"the condition can cause a chemical imbalance on the brain which could mean a normal dog could snap at any moment.

This is the main reason it is recommended that any cross bred dog isnt in a family home with small children."

This is utter tripe, I've had pedigree dogs and cross breeds. I'd say if anything the pedigrees can be more aggressive and territorial where as your average "mong" is more placid and friendly

Pasty Posted on 12/08/2009 13:38
What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

Based purely on my own experiences, I would conclude that my staff does not attack when they feel slightly threatened, why would you want to threaten a dog anyway.

I do understand your point, but I dont think your correct, you say that all dogs know how to defend themselves but staffs attack if threatened, so how would a collie for example react if threatened, how would it defend itself? It would attack, thatís its only line of defence

the-show-stopper Posted on 12/08/2009 13:40
What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

it's only what i read up on, research does show a chemical imbalance in the brain of the dog.

Rod100 Posted on 12/08/2009 13:42
What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

any dog will attack if it feels threatened.

the problem with staffies - and its not their fault - is they tend to be owned by scrawny chavs who think its great to have a dog that attacks and is out of cintrol.

obviously there are decent owners of staffies, but it is the mongs that give the dog a bad press.

What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

Last December I had to have a 2 year old Border Collie put down for biting us. The most damage he ever managed to do was a few gashes on the leg or arm.

But if I had a Staffy, Rotty, Akita...etc and they turned in the same way that the Collie did I dread to think what damage they could have done to me or, god forbid, a child. Minimum of hospitalisation for me and probably death for a child, I would guess.

I've never been in contact with a Staffy but avoid them on the street and would NEVER own any dog that has the potential to kill.

Thats the difference. Now, you Staffy lovers will say something like 'any dog has the potential to kill'. But they don't really. My Collie was a vicious little thing when he turned but I could always fend him off quite comfortably. He was never allowed near children or out in the garden on his own but if he had attacked a child it would be a matter of seconds before he could be overpowered and the child released. Could you Staffy owners say the same? I doubt it. The kid would die.

Hmmm, am I the only one then who sees something sinister in a stranger fondling your dog?

If you were stopped in the park by a bloke who patted your wife on the head, admired her coat and asked how old she was, wouldnt you be a bit suspicious of his motives?

Pasty Posted on 12/08/2009 13:49
What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

Hercules, you make a good point, thats why a staff or any such dog akita, rottie etc should be owned by someone responsible who knows how to handle a dog like that and they shouldnt be made to feel like a yob for owning one

Rod100 Posted on 12/08/2009 13:49
What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

hercules - i take it you did your best to train the dog in the 2 years of its existence?

collies are hard work as they require nigh on constant amusement/working etc.

and akita - should never be in a house or near people. a recently domesticated breed that are quite viscious.

the-show-stopper Posted on 12/08/2009 13:51
What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

thats not true some dogs will defend itself from a true threat where as other dogs will attack you for being in their space.

Massive difference.

Pasty Posted on 12/08/2009 13:53
What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

showstopper, so basically you are saying the majority of staffs will attack if you are in their space? Incorrect,

Are you just making this up

Hercules Posted on 12/08/2009 13:56
What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

hercules - i take it you did your best to train the dog in the 2 years of its existence?

I know it might sound daft but he was perfetly trained. Didn't need a lead(Although obviously, was on a lead at all times outside the house), he just obeyed. I'm a student so have plenty of time on my hands. He had 2 3/4 mile walks a day and 3/4 6 mile runs a week. I don't know what that has to do with anything though.

the-show-stopper Posted on 12/08/2009 13:57
What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

no you just said that.

i am saying all dogs that are easily threatened and easily turn to aggression should be up down.

Rod100 Posted on 12/08/2009 13:59
What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

i asked to see if he was stimulated etc. as collie need 'working' or amusing more than most other breeds.

did he just turn on you one day?

Pasty Posted on 12/08/2009 14:00
What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

so what dogs are easily threatened?

Hercules Posted on 12/08/2009 14:02
What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

He had always done it. Even when he was a puppy. We got him from a farm when he was 6 weeks old(so young because his mother was turning on him and his siblings). We think that might have had something to do with it.

TheSmogMonster Posted on 12/08/2009 14:04
What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

I don't think staffys are a bad breed, I know a few people with them and they are all soft. Not the brightest dogs but I've never heard of any of those I know attacking anyone.

An Akita shouldn't be around people eh? My sister has one, lovely dog, scared of its own shadow most of the time, but soft and good with kids.

I also had a friend who had the softest nicest rottweiler in the world.

Now the thing I've noticed is dogs appear to pick up their owners personalities and reflect that, I've known dozens of 'dangerous dogs' which have had lovely personalities.

That said I wouldn't leave them alone with my kids out of common sense, but in the 'family unit' I've never had a problem with any of these dogs.

In fact the only dogs I've ever been bit by are yorkshire terriers, and I've been around dogs my whole life.

the-show-stopper Posted on 12/08/2009 14:05
What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

Pasty you are trying to get me to generalise.

usually dogs with hidden inbred conditions are dogs that have been mistreated, or trained in the wrong way.

Rod100 Posted on 12/08/2009 14:05
What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

it might have like?

when he was a puppy did he bite hard, or was it mouthing that puppies do?

Hercules Posted on 12/08/2009 14:07
What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

No it turned and tried to really hurt you.

I have no real desire to talk about it to be honest. Its not something I enjoy talking about and would rather the thread was about the original point. I only brought him up as a way of demonstrating that any dog can turn but with largely different outcomes.

Rod100 Posted on 12/08/2009 14:08
What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

my apologies fella.

the-show-stopper Posted on 12/08/2009 14:22

Pasty Posted on 12/08/2009 14:25
What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

naughty, to right he is, he's 8 months, very mischievous, not vicious though, and knows where he comes in the pecking order

the-show-stopper Posted on 12/08/2009 14:27

Pasty Posted on 12/08/2009 14:32

the-show-stopper Posted on 12/08/2009 14:34

Pasty Posted on 12/08/2009 14:37
What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

he bites chew toys and most of the kitchen (need a new kitchen pretty much), but not hands

the-show-stopper Posted on 12/08/2009 14:38
What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

basically he bites and chews things, so as yet he doesnt fully know right from wrong.

What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

Sorry got to hold my hands up here my dog play bites, but only with me.

Cue, tutts of dissaproval and calls of you know where that will lead - body dismemberment and so on[?].

Story is I got Pip from a rescue home out near Guisboro when she was 13 months old she was into biting hands then so there was limited scope to change her ways. Although she does know how far to take it with me or else she gets a smack. then she comes back with her pw in the air to say sorry can we start fighting again

[?] Oh have I just called myself a chav[|)]

Pasty Posted on 12/08/2009 14:46

you didnt ask if he barks though

the-show-stopper Posted on 12/08/2009 14:47
What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

Rod100 NO i was pointing out that the dog by chewing the kitchen doesnt know right from wrong.

THAT WAS IT!

mind at 8months and it still having issues like that can only lead to more severe control issues with the dog.

the-show-stopper Posted on 12/08/2009 14:49
What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

Pasty so you never ever barks at strange dogs but he does bark at other things.

Like what?

Pasty Posted on 12/08/2009 14:49
What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

get a grip,

he sits, stays,heels etc

I can put food infront of him and tell him to stay and he wont go to it until i say, go on then.

chews kitchen when we are not in, cant really help that

Rod100 Posted on 12/08/2009 14:49
What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

aye, and you were implying by that that it would be out of control.

i simply offered another take on the situation.

from reading your ramblings about dogs it is clear you know practically nowt about them fella.

Pasty Posted on 12/08/2009 14:50
What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

and buying him a few stuffed toys?

it can be boredom from being left alone, he needs distractions by the sound of it.

the-show-stopper Posted on 12/08/2009 15:01

Piggy Posted on 12/08/2009 15:02
What are peoples views on Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

I have to Pasty, I've made two contributions on my theory of dog fiddlers and I'm keen to see if I'm the only one in the world to have recognised the danger.

I've little interest in reading about dogs chewing chair legs though.

Whats your opinion on the ease with which a dog fiddler can caress your pet in public without attracting suspicion? Would you let a stranger throw a stick for your child?
