Disappointing move for Downing...

So after all the years of speculation at every transfer window, he's going to the mighty Aston Villa.

Stewy at 24 already has 200 prem league appearances and 23 England caps gained under three different England coaches. He has his best years well in front of him.

Following on from Turnbull's strange move to Chelsea, I hope these local lads aren't just listening to agents moving them on at all costs because we've gone down.

Good luck to Stewy but I think he could have done better than Aston Villa.

Holgate_Hero Posted on 15/07/2009 22:12
Disappointing move for Downing...

if he could have done better than villa then why hasnt he?

despite what people might think bigger clubs arent climbing over each other up to sign him are they?

all that bullschit about him only being sold to one of the top 4 was exactly that

wishful thinking by people who rate him more than those at the top of the league actually do

maybe some people need to realise that hes simply not good enough for those clubs

HolgateCorner Posted on 15/07/2009 22:14
Disappointing move for Downing...

Assuming the champs league clubs weren't interested, I think Tottenham or Everton would be a bigger step up than Villa.

Birmingham is hardly a football city and he'd have been better off staying with the boro until things were on the up, he was scoring goals again and he may have had a better club come for him.

Bownstar Posted on 15/07/2009 22:15

Great movce for him. Good team full of english players, great manager, a they get a load of fans turning out at home. Much better than going to Spurs imo.

Disappointing move for Downing...

Think it will be a good move for him.

Playing under Martin O'Neil will improve him - seems to have a knack of getting the most out of his players.

Tottenham under Harry Redknapp....so many players in and out he could be first choice today, tomorrow they sign Robben and he's on the bench.

Everton - same as Villa. Nothing between them.

See how it pans out for him.

Holgate_Hero Posted on 15/07/2009 22:18

why would spurs be a better move?

theyre not in europe and have a habit of simply not living up to their potential

indestructible_7 Posted on 15/07/2009 22:22
Disappointing move for Downing...

Is it just me or is this the best move he could have possible made, given that he's not good enough for top 4 starting eleven or Man City? Perfect move for him, he will play for England for many a year. Good luck to him.

'Birmingham is hardly a football city'

You're joking I hope. Only London has more teams in the Premier League.

He's done well to get a move to Villa.

HolgateCorner Posted on 15/07/2009 22:28
Disappointing move for Downing...

Sorry to disagree but Villa just don't float my boat.

Downing is not the kind of player MON allegedly 'gets the best out of', he is more of a Muzzy Izzet type of manager, none of his teams have ever played attractive football and his long gone hey day was with Leicester (where admittedly he was outstanding).

Spurs and everton have much stronger pedigree than Villa.

"Sorry to disagree but Villa just don't float my boat."

i doubt downing gives a flying fukk what you think though hes on the verge of leaving a championship club for a top 6 club

as much as a think hes a vastly overrated player i cant deny hes done good to get a move to villa

HolgateCorner Posted on 15/07/2009 22:43
Disappointing move for Downing...

considering the massive catchment (Britains second city) and the fact that Brum City are such an underachieving club, Villas support must be statistically the wort in the premier league.

Birmingham has never been a football hotbed and never will be.

diggerman Posted on 15/07/2009 22:44
Disappointing move for Downing...

yeah , good move for him and for boro.
12 mill is a decent price i reckon , and i'd say villa are about the right level for him.
He wouldn't play more than a handful of games for any of the "big 4" - and the games he would play in would more than likely be in the league cup.

Holgate_Hero Posted on 15/07/2009 22:50

youre just posting complete bollox now hc

probably borne out of bitterness that downing is off to a better club [rle]

HolgateCorner Posted on 15/07/2009 22:57
Disappointing move for Downing...

I know the board is running slow but it's no excuse for bigging up a no mark team like Villa, who apart from a league/euro flash in the pan in 1983 or thereabouts have done nothing in my lifetime.

I like Stewy I think he's a top player with a lot of top football in front of him, I wish he was going to a better club than Villa that's all. They are very average no matter how you try to dress it up.

Holgate_Hero Posted on 15/07/2009 23:01
Disappointing move for Downing...

very average yet have finished 6th two seasons on the trot

get over yourself for fukks sake [rle]

the fact is a top 6 club that has qualified for europe has shown significant interest in him despite the fact hes going to be out for months

if he ever had the ability to play for a better club than villa he would be

the fact is his simply isnt and youre coming across like quite a sad bitter little man with a massive chip on your shoulder

HolgateCorner Posted on 15/07/2009 23:06

Holgate Hero - I'm stunned at your intellect and your reasoned arguments, but never mind..

You know as well as I do that Villa will never get into the top four and 6th might as well be 16th because nobody is interested in the Uefa or whatever form it is going to be this season.

It's a poor move for a player of Stewies ability/potential. Face up to it.

Outside of the top 4 this is as good as it could have been for him.

I surprised people are suggesting its not a good move for him and I'm struggling to think of another club that would have been better.

"You know as well as I do that Villa will never get into the top four and 6th might as well be 16th because nobody is interested in the Uefa or whatever form it is going to be this season."

lets be honest as a boro fan thats an absolute dickhead comment to make especially after out own campaigns in europe try telling all those that went to the final that no one is interested in it [rle]

"It's a poor move for a player of Stewies ability/potential. Face up to it."

but it isnt though as he simply isnt good enough to play for a club in the top 4 and has done well to even attract the interest of a top 6 club

if he could do better than villa he would have done the fact of the matter is he cant

It gets tedious reading the pre-pubescent arguments regarding Downing. FFS, he'd have signed for Lands End Utd if they were willing to pay the wonga to the player and club.

Do not mix up footballers with supporters.

nidge Posted on 15/07/2009 23:31
Disappointing move for Downing...

HC has a point in so far as Villa aren't the fantastic team people seem to think they are.

So they finished 6th in probably the worst premier league there's ever been. They managed just 2 wins in their last 14 or 15 games last season, a scrappy 1-0 win over atrocious Hull, and the last day 1-0 win against the spineless skunks.

If he hadn't been injured he'd be signing for Liverpool. An unfortunate injury has robbed him of the move he really deserved since I believe he's good enough to play regular Champions League football. I don't think he'll get that opportunity with Villa, especially now that Man City are going to do a Chelski and buy their way into a CL spot every year.

But hopefully if he shines for Villa next season, I wouldn't be suprised to see him end up at a Liverpool or Man Utd for 15m+ (hope Boro got a 10% sell on clause in the deal off Villa!).

Good luck to him. [^]

absolute bollox and you know it

if downing was good enough for liverpool hed have already gone there last season instead benny went and signed riera instead and if they really valued him like you seem to think so theyd be prepared to take the risk of signing him without his services being available for a few months

'considering the massive catchment (Britains second city) and the fact that Brum City are such an underachieving club, Villas support must be statistically the wort in the premier league.'

There was no reason whatsoever to post the above statement, if attendances were what attracted players to a club then Torres would haven chosen Newcastle over Liverpool.

By the way, Wolves are from that area too.

Stanley_Downing Posted on 16/07/2009 00:26
Disappointing move for Downing...

For people saying it's a poor move for Downing, if he impresses at Villa i'd say there'd be a much higher chance of him making the step up to a top four team, then if he impressed for us.

Villa seem to be a team the media like, he may get alot of praise while there, gaining more caps and then progressing to a bigger team again.

br14 Posted on 16/07/2009 00:42
Disappointing move for Downing...

It'll be interesting to see where he plays if he ends up at Villa.

Now Barry has gone, they look very light weight in central midfield.

Seems to me O'Neill is balancing his side with Downing but will still need a good central midfielder before the season starts.

The positive from Downings perspective is that O'Neill probably has a lot of money to spend, and no doubt he is about to receive a big increase in salary.

Personally I think he'd have been better waiting till January when chances are one or more of the last seasons top 4 will be desperate to improve their squads given the fact Man City will almost certainly be top 4 next season.

I like this remark. The chip on his shoulder must be as big as the one on yours HolgateHero! All you seem to do is slate Downing on this board, for why i know not.

Good luck to Stewy, he's got a top-class career ahead of him, many more England caps and hopefully some winners medals and i, for one, would love to see him return to Boro at some point in the future.

zaphod Posted on 16/07/2009 04:53
Disappointing move for Downing...

Villa is a good move for Downing. They were in 4th place last season until the small size of their squad & reliance on a few key players caught up with them. I'm sure Downing is only one step in Martin O'Neil's plan to build a top 4 squad. Everton do well based on hard work & a strong team ethic; Spurs have always flattered to deceive. Villa have more potential & an owner with the money to back his manager.

As for Birmingham not being a football city, I've rarely heard a more inaccurate assessment. Birmingham & Lancashire were the twin cradles of the English Football League, with Villa's Chairman being the founder of the League, and 3 of the original 12 League Clubs (Villa, WBA & Wolves) were from the Birmingham area. I think only ManU, Liverpool, Arsenal & Everton have won more trophies than Villa. Birmingham City have always been the poor relations, with as little success as the Boro.

If Downing was good enough for the "top 4" , then surely he'd have held out til one of em comes in for him .
the fact the he didnt and they didnt (if you get what i mean) says it all.

Its a great move for Stewy and I guess one motivated by career motives rather than financial. FFS people moan at Turnbull going to a top 4 team, then moan when Stewy doesnt!

MON will help in his development, which wasnt happening here. He's had a poor season in a poor team and it will do his development no end of good under a new regime.

Barring City (who will be upsetting the apple cart if you like it or not) that's about as good a move as he could have got.

Shock horror, Downing went to a top six club instead of a top four club.

How disappointing for the lad, To move to a team with genuine aspirations of a top four finish and European football.

Come the end of the transfer window and we see how inflated the current prices are, Downings 12m will look like we have sold him on the cheap.

Best of luck to the lad.

How is a move to Aston Villa a disappointing move for Downing? You do realise where he's moving from?

Villa are a step up from Boro in every single department. Downing isn't good enough for the Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal or Chelsea.

Back onto Aston Villa though. They're a good club with an excellent manager and very good owner. Add to that a decent fanbase, cracking stadium, good history and he's onto a good move.

Oh, and Villa, West Brom and nearby Wolves weren't really founder members of the league with Birmingham following on shortly afterwards.

Ah, I see the 'not in my lifetime' version of history applies. You really read some tosh on here sometimes.

Downing is probably the best crosser of a ball in England. John Carew is possibly the best in the air. Sounds like a pretty good match. Villa or Everton would be ideal for Downing but still gutted that he's leaving.
